Join us on October 24, 2024 as over two million readers and thousands of classrooms, libraries and communities come together to celebrate early literacy by reading Piper Chen Sings by Grammy Award-Winning Hamilton star Phillipa Soo and Maris Pasquale Doran

As we embark on our program’s 20th year in the College of Education & Human Development and gear up to celebrate our annual Read for the Record event, happening on October 24th, Jumpstart is looking for volunteers.

In previous years, Jumpstart collaborated with City Year members, and we would love to continue and expand this partnership by inviting members from other AmeriCorps programs to volunteer. We are planning a large event this year, celebrating not only the national Read for the Record campaign but also Jumpstart Philadelphia’s 20 years of service through the College of Education and Human Development at Temple University.

The event will take place on Thursday, October 24th, from 8:30 AM to approximately 11:00 AM. Volunteers will meet at Walk Auditorium (Ritter Hall) and then visit local preschools to read and participate in activities with children.

We would be grateful if you could share the event information and registration link with your AmeriCorps members and alumni networks. We are asking volunteers to sign up by Friday, October 18th. Volunteers will be required to complete a Volunteer Consent Form to run a quick background check (NSOPW) to meet school requirements.

This would be a wonderful opportunity for collaboration among AmeriCorps programs, and we’d love to show the strength of our collective impact in the Philadelphia community.

At Temple, we have 80 college students who commit to serving 300 hours in preschool classrooms throughout the North Philadelphia community.

Annually, Jumpstart hosts a national event called Jumpstart’s Read for the Record®. Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® highlights the importance of high-quality early education in America by mobilizing millions of children and adults to celebrate literacy by participating in the largest shared reading experience. In 2015, more than 2.2 million people participated in the campaign. The campaign has gained national exposure in key media outlets including NBC’s TODAY Show, People, The Wall Street Journal, and The Huffington Post. This year on October 27th, people across the country will read The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sarcone-Roach.

In Philadelphia, we are trying to engage as many people in the city to participate in this national event and spread the word about the importance of high-quality early education and literacy. We will be engaging volunteers in a pre-read orientation at Temple University followed by reading and crafts in Jumpstart’s preschool centers. If you would like to participate in the event with us, please follow this link to register: https://goo.gl/forms/MkJ2p9ZMYFojKzZp2. All volunteers must be available from 8:30am-11:30am on Thursday, October 27th.

In addition, if you know classroom teachers who would like to participate – please spread the word! They can receive more information about how they can participate by emailing jumpstart@temple.edu.
