We are, too. While current powers that be may have a lockdown on the news, they cannot define reality.

There are other ways to see the larger world and those in it. Ways that allow us to safely turn towards each other in difficult times. Ways that allow us to tap into our most creative and marvelous selves. Ways that help us communicate complex stories.

Join us for this interactive, in-person workshop to learn more about the creative and political power of Magical Realism. During times of conflict and injustice, Magical Realism offers a portal into unseen possibilities. Embracing the mundane as well as the fantastic, Magical Realism is the balance that an out-of-balance world demands.

There is no cost to attend. We hope to attract participants working for the greater good in every sector. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of Magical Realism and how to apply it effectively in their personal and professional lives.

As we look to 2021 and beyond, it’s hard to conceive of a future that is open to possibility. As leaders of people who rely on us for our responsible direction, it’s even harder to take that risk. We created this workshop as an introduction to future thinking. Using elements of storytelling and play, we lead participants through a simple process that opens up the channels of curiosity in spite of uncertainty.

The workshop is good for big thinkers, leaders, consultants, founders, activists, educators, community leaders, and anyone else who is looking to move forward in 2021.

At the end of this workshop participants will:

  • Gain three strategies to foster a spirit of curiosity in the workplace
  • Evaluate 2020 innovations for lasting impact
  • Craft takeaways such as a story to share with stakeholders, early-stage project idea, new area or issue to research, a new way to approach a challenge

Facilitators are Jen Brevoort of PopupPlay and Megan Haupt of Hungry Education.

The camp is being held on site at the Market the week of 8/20-8/24. Our camp will explore the past, present and future of Reading Terminal Market with a camper capstone project of designing a Reading Terminal Market of the future. We are seeking applicants with an education background and classroom experience. Interest in food and food systems and some experience with project-based learning preferred. Applicants must be able to pass the three required PA clearances, lift up to 50 lbs, and keep up with active children. Hungry Education, a food start-up based in Philadelphia, PA, is seeking contract workers for its Pre-C program, an early food education program for children ages 2-4. Hungry focuses on helping children build positive and healthy relationships with all foods. We do this through our play-based methodology using storytelling, dramatic play, games, movement, and music. We also make simple, hands-on recipes and do a lot of sensory play with ingredients.

We are seeking applicants with either early childhood, childcare, or performance backgrounds who also happen to share a passion for food and eating. Food: The Common Denominator is four day, half-day camp in Germantown. Campers learn fractions, ratios, and measurements while baking and cooking. Camp includes all ingredients, materials, lunch, and drinks. This camp is peanut and nut-free.

Through a generous donation from Alma Mater restaurant, Hungry is able to offer two scholarships to this camp. Scholarship eligibility is based on financial need and an interest in food and cooking. For more information, please email Megan Haupt at megan@hungryeducation.com.
