Without a doubt, an intense focus on numbers and metrics is the current zeitgeist of higher education.  When community-engaged researchers and their supporters meet, the question “What are our metrics?” often arises.  While metrics are typically used to support market-driven goals and can oversimplify complex research-such as community engaged scholarship-they can also be valuable when used grounded in a humanizing and relational stance.

Dr. Jeremy Price, supported by the CUMU-Collaboratory Fellowship, has been developing a set of metrics that better capture the true essence of community-engaged research. These new metrics consider the full context, relationships, and efforts involved in this type of work.  Drawing inspiration from Neil Postman’s constructive approach to change, Dr. Price will discuss the benefits, challenges, and opportunities that come with using these more human-centered metrics.

Join us to learn how these new metrics can help provide a platform for project evaluation and communicate the important nuances of community-engaged research to a wide range of audiences, including funders, administrators, colleagues, and communities.

It is our hope that the DICE Network can provide a backbone for communication and sharing amongst individuals who may not have strong support networks for institution-level assessment and evaluation work at their home institutions. DICE provides an open forum for networking and peer sharing around institutional community engagement data needs and topics.

The November 2023 meeting will focus on communication of data/visualizations for different stakeholder groups. This meeting will be dialogue driven, not presentation driven – so we encourage you to come ready to share your ideas, questions, successes, and challenges with colleagues.

Closing Session: Using Institutional Data to Understand the Impacts of Community Engagement Across the Country;Thursday, September 28  |  2:00 – 3:00 ET

Research on the impacts of community engagement in higher education is still in an early stage, particularly when it comes to documenting engagement’s impact beyond the institution. Existing research tends to be qualitative in nature, focused on individual partnerships. There is a pressing need for quantitative and mixed-methods research that looks at outcomes and impacts across partnerships, departments, and institutions. One approach to addressing this gap is using the kind of institutional data on engagement that increasing numbers of colleges and universities are collecting.

In this webinar, scholars will present on a study of community engagement impact using the Collaboratory database, which includes institutional data from almost 50 colleges and universities across the country. The presenters will share initial findings, which contribute to a baseline understanding of the landscape of engagement and its current and potential impacts. Presenters will also discuss the limitations of the study, and the challenges and opportunities of using institutional data to study community engagement.

Student Summit: Considerations for Community Engagement and Engaged Research; Friday, September 29 | 2:00 – 4:00pm ET

This one-day virtual conference, offered in collaboration with Campus Compact and the Graduate Student Network of the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement, is open to any and all undergraduate and graduate students and early career professionals interested in community engagement and community-engaged research. This virtual conference offers professional development and opportunities to share and collaborate with others.
