The Carnegie Corporation of New York has issued a call for proposals for Family Engagement to Improve Student Learning.

According to the foundation, family engagement is one of the most influential factors in educational outcomes, particularly for students of color, multilingual learners, and low-income students. Research shows that students learn more when families have a meaningful role in their education.

To that end, the Carnegie Corporation will select up to ten nonprofit organizations to participate in a grantee cohort that designs, implements, and improves upon school-based family engagement strategies with a specific focus on advancing student learning. Each grantee will receive an award ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 over twelve months, with the opportunity to renew the grant for a second year.

Grantees will also participate in a community of practice where they collaborate and learn while benefiting from professional learning workshops and one-on-one support provided by the Columbia University Center for Public Research and Leadership (CPRL), which will help grantees clarify and refine their family engagement models, operationalize their strategies through data collection and analysis, and conduct short-cycle improvement tests to help grantees continuously improve their family engagement projects or programs. CPRL will also capture lessons from these experiences and disseminate them to the field to enhance family engagement practice nationally.

The Corporation seeks organizations and projects that have deep roots in their local communities; support learning of Black, Latino/Latine/Latinx, Native-Americans, low-income, and/or multilingual students; student learning in public elementary, middle, or high schools, including a focus on math, language arts, science, or social-emotional learning; and partnerships with school districts and Title I schools to achieve project goals; involve collaboration between educators and families in ongoing and sustained ways, as well as those that have the potential to scale. Though not a requirement, the Corporation is especially interested in projects involving high-quality instructional materials (i.e., materials that are “green” on EdReports).

To be eligible, organizations must be a U.S.-based nonprofit organization and have existing relationships with school districts.

A two-hundred-and-fifty-word Expression of Intent is due October 8, 2021, and selected applicants will be invited to submit a Concept Paper by November 5, 2021. Twelve to fifteen organizations will be identified as semifinalists and invited to interview in December, and seven to ten finalist organizations will be invited to submit full funding proposals by January 12, 2022.

The Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award encourages library users in the U.S. to recognize the accomplishments of exceptional public, school, and college librarians. Administered by the American Library Association, with support from Carnegie Corporation of New York and the New York Times Company, the program seeks nominations that describe how a librarian is improving the lives of people in a school, campus, or community.

Up to ten winners will be selected to receive a $5,000 cash award, a plaque, and a $500 travel stipend to attend the awards reception in New York.

Nominees must be a librarian with a master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in library and information studies or a master’s degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Nominees must currently be working in the U.S. in a public library, a library at an accredited two- or four-year college or university, or at an accredited K-12 school.

Nominators must be public library users. Nominators of librarians in college, community college, or university libraries must be users of those libraries (e.g., students, faculty, or staff members). Nominators of school library media specialists must be library users (e.g., students, teachers, school administrators or staff members, or parents or caregivers of children at schools where the school library media specialist works).
