Higher education needs to prepare its own campuses and communities, and also has an important role to play partnering with  communities to build resilience.  Higher education institutions and  associations have a unique and important opportunity to help higher education create more climate adaptation and resilience readiness within our sector and within human societies across the country and the globe.

The adaptive and resilient higher education institution is designed to reduce unnecessary human suffering, save resources and money and help reduce pollution and climate change. Since it can be difficult to plan and take action for adaptation and resilience choices, this webinar will highlight domestic examples on a campus and with community partners to show how higher education research and applied projects can produce positive community outcomes.

The webinar will consist of:

1. Very quick overview of the need for and benefits of adaptation and resilience planning and action
2. Real world examples from higher education in partnership with other sectors (government, campus, communities)
3. Resources for planning, operationalization and continuous improvement

Webinar #2 (March 11, 2015, 3:00-4:30PM ET) The Why and How of Transformative Learning with Deborah McNamara, Director of Organizational Partnerships, Northwest Earth Institute – NWEI will provide the context around why transformative learning and deeper engagement in sustainability issues is important. The way we learn and engage is critical to fostering the skills and motivation needed to rise to sustainability challenges. Sustainability education should encompass much more than mere knowledge acquisition, instead holistically integrating a transformative learning process that engages the whole person: our thinking, our habits, and our beliefs – as well as how our behavior matches up with our knowledge. Effective sustainability education and engagement addresses the “say-do gap,” which behavior change experts cite as being the difference between saying what we believe and actually doing it. This webinar will provide resources for moving beyond mere knowledge acquisition to application, shared discovery, personal reflection, and positive action – thus enabling more effective sustainability education and engagement grounded in a transformative, participatory learning process. Participants will learn how to integrate NWEI discussion based course books (which are grounded in transformative learning processes) into the classroom.
