This individual will serve as a key connector between the Foundation, high schools, students, and partner universities, helping to build a scalable, outcomes-driven college success initiative. Qualified candidates must reside near Philadelphia, PA.

The Foundation has historically focused on high school programs; the post-secondary effort is newer and rapidly evolving. The Post-Secondary Education Program prioritizes colleges with strong academic and support outcomes for lower-income students and degree programs aligned with clear career pathways and strong post-graduate earning potential. This role offers a unique opportunity to build partnerships, and directly impact college access, persistence, and career outcomes for underserved students.

As a fully remote position, the Director (Philadelphia) will need to possess strong time management and organizational skills. They must be able to work independently while also working collaboratively with colleagues in Philadelphia, Cleveland and Chicago. In-person meetings and school visits in the Philadelphia area will be required.

The ideal candidate is mission-driven, relationship-focused, and results-oriented. They must be passionate about expanding access to high-quality post-secondary opportunities and ensuring students succeed in college and beyond. They are comfortable building systems and contribute to the growth of a small but impactful organization.

In recent years, there’s been a steady stream of op-eds and opinion polls debating the value of higher education. While their conclusions vary, one thing is constant: too few reflect the perspectives of those who have the most to gain, and lose, from going to college – first-generation and low-income young people.

To address this gap, College Access: Research & Action (CARA) asked a group of first-generation and low-income young people in New York City to co-lead a research project on this topic by examining existing studies and conducting interviews with 65 of their peers. As documented in our new report, we observed two findings that challenge common narratives.

First, contrary to the past several years’ news coverage, we found that the vast majority of young people – about 75% – still want to go to college. This durable desire for college has recently been showing up in other studies, as more data shows that Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completions are going up, enrollments are increasing, and student experiences are significantly more positive than are accounted for by the general public’s concerns.

Second, we heard that “return on investment (ROI),” the framework of college value used by (too) many policymakers, doesn’t align well with how first-gen young people actually make decisions. This insight is unique to this research, so this blog will unpack three dimensions of this finding and why it matters.

The Teaching & Learning Commons at Swarthmore College is pleased to invite you and your colleagues to the Teachers as Scholars Program. Teachers as Scholars provides K-12 teachers with professional development in the form of college seminars– at no cost to the participants. Unlike traditional PD, which relates directly to pedagogy or curriculum, Teachers as Scholars offers the opportunity for educators to explore important topics that may or may not relate to their area of teaching expertise, facilitated by Swarthmore College professors. We believe that working educators benefit and grow from protected time to be scholars.

This summer, Dr. Roseann Liu, Associate Professor of Educational Studies & Asian American Studies, will lead the seminar, The Death and Life of Great American Public Schools. Geared toward Philadelphia public school teachers, this two-day seminar will help us collectively make sense of current conditions of public education. We will explore contemporary struggles over school funding, closures, and toxic school facilities through the rubric of organized abandonment, situating these within the broader attack on public education in the last half century.

*Please register by Monday, June 22

Our program is part of a historic national project connecting higher education institutions to local teachers and is offered at no cost to educators or schools. We aim to have teachers from across the Philadelphia area attend these workshops and keep the cohorts small (usually 15-20 teachers) so that the experience is lively and intimate. We also provide breakfast and lunch. Administrators, please send this invitation to your K-12 educators. Educators, please send to your colleagues. We ask that you register only if you can commit to both dates of the seminars, for the full time period each day.
