National Fund for Sacred Places invites applications from historic congregations

Established in 2016, the National Fund for Sacred Places provides technical and financial support for congregations, building their capacity and increasing the stability of these critical yet disappearing historic community centers. A collaborative program of Partners for Sacred Places and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Fund is supported by $64 million from the Indiana-based Lilly Endowment; the Gerry Charitable Trust provided additional support in 2019.

The program funds historic preservation projects addressing urgent repair needs related to structural components, walls, roofs, and/or other elements of the building envelope that are integral to a building’s preservation and longevity. Projects that improve functionality or improve accessibility of the property in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are also eligible, as well as renovation projects that make vacant or underused space usable for community outreach, but applicants should demonstrate that urgent repair needs to the building envelope have already been identified by a building conditions assessment and addressed before proposing ADA or interior rehabilitation projects. All projects must adhere to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

Applications capture data related to the National Fund’s six core criteria: historic, cultural, or architectural significance; community-serving congregations; project scope and need; fundraising readiness; healthy congregations; and strong applications.

To be eligible, the property must be located within the United States or its territories; the property must have been originally built to be a house of worship, and must be owned by an active community of faith; the congregation must be at least three years old; the property must possess historical, cultural, or architectural significance; the property must be occupied by a congregation that is community-minded and that serves nonmembers; the property must have urgent repair needs related to structural components, walls, roof, and/or other elements of the building envelope that are integral to a building’s preservation and longevity; anticipated capital projects must respect the property’s historic character and materials, and must adhere to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation; the congregation must demonstrate a need for project funds that exceeds the congregation’s typical donor base and membership; the applicant must exhibit several signs of positive organizational health; and the congregation must work with Partners for Sacred Places and the National Trust for Historic Preservation prior to disbursement of the capital grant to ensure that all program requirements have been met.

The application will launch on January 13, 2026, with applications due March 3, 2026.

All National Fund grants require a 1:1 cash match, and one-quarter of the required matching funds must be raised or pledged before any portion of the grant can be disbursed.

For complete program guidelines and application instructions, see the National Fund for Sacred Places website.

Deadline: March 3, 2026

Parenting students bear significant burdens and need additional support to navigate through their academic program successfully. In December 2022, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services released a policy report (PDF) following consultations with parenting students, postsecondary institution staff, subject matter experts, various state agencies, and community leaders. The Parent Pathways Learning Network (PPLN) concentrated on addressing the necessary support for food, childcare, housing, and financial aid. The results underscored the importance of integrating the firsthand experiences of parenting students into statewide policymaking. Governor Shapiro, in support of these findings, allocated $1.61 million in his 2023-2024 budget to support these students.

Grant Initiative

The Parent Pathways Grant provides funding to institutions to directly support the persistence of parenting students in the form of tuition assistance, emergency funding, and wrap-around service supports.

For the purposes of this grant, “institution” shall include postsecondary institutions in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with authorization to award an associate degree or higher academic degree, as defined in section 2001-J of the Public-School Code of 1949, as amended (24 P.S. §20-2001-J) and private licensed schools, as defined in the Act of December 15, 1986 (P.L. 1585, NO. 174).

Only one proposal will be accepted from each institution. Applicants may not apply as a consortium. Only the main campus may apply, and funds can be disseminated to branches as the institution deems appropriate if awarded.

Applications must be submitted via eGrants by 5:00 pm on February 6, 2026.

It’s about far more than the numbers. This National Volunteer Strategy will serve as a shared playbook for expanding volunteer participation, strengthening nonprofit capacity, and building sustainable systems that make volunteering easier, more inclusive, and more meaningful for everyone.

Join one of our upcoming Virtual Roundtables

We’re inviting you to participate in an Academic Institutions Virtual Roundtable. Your insights will directly inform the recommendations of the National Volunteer Strategy Advisory Council charged with collecting feedback and designing the Strategy.

Points of Light will host roundtables on two different dates – we invite you to RSVP for the one that works best for you:

Option 1: February 3, 2026 – 1:00 PM EST

Option 2: February 5, 2026 – 2:30 PM EST

During this roundtable, you’ll be asked to weigh in on the challenges and opportunities you see as a sector leader for bolstering volunteer participation and capacity nation-wide.

Space is limited to allow for meaningful conversation. If sessions reach capacity, we’ll add you to our waitlist and reach out if additional space opens.

We truly believe that this is a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, and that if we come together, we can make service a defining part of American life again.

LeadLab is a dynamic leadership summit for creative leaders ready to lead with courage—this year’s theme. Designed for professionals across sectors and career stages, LeadLab harnesses cross-sector and intergenerational peer exchange to cultivate actionable solutions and immersive, experiential learning.

Courage is not just a personality trait—it’s a skill. One that enables individuals and organizations to grow, adapt, and thrive in the face of challenges. But like any behavioral skill or useful mindset, competent courage comes from intentional routine and practice. Courageous leaders foster open dialogue and cultivate a dynamic and innovative culture. They make reasoned judgments, take calculated risks, and assert themselves thoughtfully.

LeadLab’s framework blends emotional intelligence with practical, real-world tools to help leaders:

Take thoughtful risks

Make values-aligned decisions

Navigate ambiguity with confidence

Model authenticity in action

Participants will actively practice boundary-setting, compassionate communication, and growth-mindset strategies, and will leave with renewed clarity and decisiveness to move a meaningful professional challenge forward with purpose and confidence.

If LeadLab feels aligned with where you are—and where you’re headed—we encourage you to apply early. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and space is limited.

Summit:

Saturday + Sunday, April 25-26

Virtual Follow Up Connection, Thursday, May 28
