National Geographic Society invites applications for programs and research to benefit the planet

The National Geographic Society (NGS) has issued a request for proposals for projects to help learners develop capacities to learn about, care for, and take action to protect our world.

Through the RFP, NGS aims to support projects or research that enacts the future today, and aims to support projects that cultivate in learners of any age the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to take action in ways that benefit the planet and its people. Projects will be supported that advance knowledge about how to spark curiosity and inspire learners of all ages to care for and protect our world; pilot new, or scale proven, educational solutions; enable learners to acquire new knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes that help them care for and protect our world; and use interdisciplinary approaches. Proposals may contain one or both elements of the following:

Project: A pilot of a new learning solution, or scaling of a learning solution with some evidence of effectiveness, to a new geography or population of learners.

Research: Measurement of the effectiveness of educational innovations that develop learners of all ages’ skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to design a future for our planet that benefits people and nature.

Competitive proposals should describe the future that you are planning toward; educational projects or research that leverage novel approaches, with potential for scale and impact, and ideas that span disciplinary, political, geographic, or cultural boundaries; the community of learners you intend to reach; the learning solution intended to develop capabilities in learners; the skills, attitudes, and knowledge your project intends to cultivate in learners in order to design a future for our planet that leads to healthier outcomes for people and nature to live and thrive; and anticipated outcomes including the intended impact(s) on the learners in addition to any impact(s) on the environment, planet, or people.

Projects do not need to use technology in order to be competitive, but may use technology as a tool to achieve learning goals. All topics related to NGS focus areas—ocean, land, wildlife, human histories and cultures, planetary health, and space—encouraged and will be considered.

Funding may be awarded in either a Level I or Level II grant. Level I grants are designed for individuals who may be earlier in their career, those looking to establish themselves better in their field, or those who want to grow their network and enhance their impact by joining a global community of National Geographic Explorers. Level I project budgets may not exceed $20,000. Level II grants are designed for individuals who are more established in their field, have previously received a grant from the NGS, or are seeking a higher level of funding. Level II project budgets are on average $50,000 to $65,000 and may not exceed $100,000.

The opportunity is open to applicants over the age of 18. The lead applicant must show evidence of experience using education as part of a deliberate strategy to achieve goals, and experience implementing education programs for learners of any age (note: this may be in a classroom setting or any other formal or informal place of learning). Academic degrees and/or credentials are not required.

For complete program guidelines and application instructions, see the National Geographic Society website.

Deadline: November 19, 2025

Understanding young people’s attitudes toward democratic participation can help states summon the resolve and the wisdom to strengthen civics learning.

In 2024, fewer than one in four US youth felt like they belonged to a group that expresses itself politically, and 44 percent of young nonvoters were disinterested or disliked the candidates. In a moment where many adults of all ages are dissatisfied with politics, polarization, and American governmental institutions, the state of youth civic engagement is of particular importance. What does the next generation of voters understand about how they can engage civically? What do they believe about civic engagement? And how can educators and education policymakers support these young citizens better?

As civics educators, we believe it is essential that state policymakers understand the current state of youth civic engagement and recognize their critical role in creating the enabling conditions for increasing opportunities for young people to be engaged in civic life. We would argue that state policymakers must also directly engage with youth to help them develop civic skills.

What Surveys Reveal

Researchers have learned something about young voters’ behaviors and perceptions of their role as civic actors. The Center for Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University is one of the richest sources of data on the state of youth voting and the attitudes of young voters. In their 2024 postelection poll of a nationally representative sample of young people ages 18 to 34, CIRCLE found that youth voter participation dropped sharply in 2024, from a high of 50 percent in 2020 to only 42 percent in the most recent presidential election. More than a third of young people reported that voting in 2024 was not important to them. The most common reason given was that they did not like any of the candidates.

Investor-owned homes have also been correlated with higher rates of blight, code violations, and evictions, which harms both tenants and the broader community.

This Symposium will focus on what taking local control of land looks like in Philadelphia, what we can learn from other cities, and what to expect for the future given changes at the federal, state, and local level. We will also explore solutions that would increase local ownership of housing and preserve affordability. The Symposium will be 2-4:30 followed by a reception.

How can engaging learning communities in global health reporting bridge divides, surface solutions, and inspire action that improves health outcomes?

We are excited to announce the launch of our latest grant program for individuals and organizations serving K-12 students and/or educators to increase understanding of global health topics and explore the role the news media plays in the health ecosystem. If you have felt inspired by the work of our Teacher Fellow cohorts as they discovered creative and engaging ways to connect their students with global health stories, this opportunity just might be what you’re looking for.

This program consists of three main components: the initial proposal, a collaborative winter incubator, and project implementation. After proposing educational projects, accepted applicants will refine their project plans in a series of workshops and submit formal grant proposals to secure $1,500 grants to fund project implementation in spring 2026.

Proposed projects should engage Ode to Healthy Futures OR one or more eligible news stories as a central resource. We welcome applications from people serving K-12 students and teachers in a wide range of contexts, including libraries, museums, community centers, schools, small businesses, and municipal programs. Proposed projects should serve at least 500 K-12 students and/or educators in the U.S. and U.S. territories, and we encourage applicants working with smaller groups to collaborate and apply as a multisite or multiorganizational project.

Ready to get started? Read the full program description to discover all the details about this exciting opportunity and to begin your application!

If you still have questions about this program after reading the description, you can respond to this newsletter or email us any time at education@pulitzercenter.org.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars—Applications are due Sunday, November 16, 2025, 11:59pm EST.

Child Tax Credits have been the focus of increased lawmaker attention over the past few years, especially following the dramatic success of the 2021 federal CTC expansion in reducing child poverty and the subsequent resurgence of pre-pandemic child poverty levels. While 15 states now supplement the federal credit with their own Child Tax Credits to better reduce poverty, boost economic security, and invest in children, no cities have yet implemented their own credits. These local Child Tax Credits are a logical next step for local lawmakers looking to deliver meaningful results for their communities.

A new analysis by the Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, produced with the support of Share Our Strength, focuses on the potential of these credits and finds that local lawmakers could aid in significantly reducing child poverty with relatively modest investments in local Child Tax Credits. The study focuses on 14 cities (Baltimore, Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Oakland, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle, and the District of Columbia).
