The Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood supports development projects and promising research that appear likely to improve the welfare of young children in the United States, from infancy through age 7. Welfare is broadly defined to support, acculturation, societal integration, and childcare.

The foundation invites letters of intent in the following categories:

Parenting Education: To help parents create nurturing environments for their children, the foundation supports programs that teach parents about developmental psychology, cultural child rearing differences, pedagogy, issues of health, prenatal care and diet, as well as programs that provide both cognitive and emotional support to parents.

Early Childhood Welfare: According to the foundation, providing a safe and nurturing environment is essential, as is imparting the skills of social living in a culturally diverse world. Therefore, the foundation supports projects that seek to perfect child-rearing practices and identify models that can provide creative, caring environments in which all young children thrive.

Early Childhood Education and Play: The foundation seeks to improve the quality of both early childhood teaching and learning, through the development of innovative curricula and research based pedagogical standards, as well as the design of imaginative play materials and learning environments.

Grants are only made if a successful project outcome will likely be of significant interest to other professionals within the grantee’s field of endeavor, and would have a direct benefit and potential national application.

Letters of intent must be received no later than January 31, 2025, and selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application.

For complete program guidelines and application procedures, see the Caplan Foundation website.

Challenges are pending on the Constitutionality of the Johnson Amendment prohibiting charity electioneering and the validity of the requirement for Schedule B of the Form 990. The debate about donor advised funds continues.

We now have a current judicial definition of how much electioneering is permitted for 501(c)(4) social welfare organizations. It could change the role of “dark money” in politics. But will it make any difference?

Changes to the Tax Code next year could significantly affect contributions and the climate for giving, which was significantly changed by the last big tax bill.

What is happening with higher education? Has the Ivy League really broken America? Will their endowments be taxed more heavily because of it?

Will nonprofits be prohibited from advancing diversity, equity and inclusion? Several courts and organizations have spoken.

On corporate governance, there have been key developments in indemnification, membership rights and fiduciary duties. Whatever happened to the National Rifle Association?

With charitable trusts, several cases have affected trustee rights and obligations and the ability of a beneficiary to terminate a charitable trust because of trustee fees.

On charitable solicitation registration, we used to say there were registration requirements in 39 states and the District of Columbia. Now it is only 38 states and the District of Columbia. Why and how are the requirements for registration changing?

Can a fundraiser be stopped from using donor information gained with one charity when working for a new organization on the grounds that the donor information is a trade secret?

Does the Corporate Transparency Act affect nonprofits?

Pennsylvania has begun to enforce a new annual registration requirement. What must nonprofits do and what happens if they don’t?

What is happening in nonprofit journalism?

The school was founded more than 50 years ago to help fill the need for doctors in West Virginia’s rural communities. Continuing in its mission to serve the state’s rural residents, WVSOM founded the Center for Rural and Community Health (CRCH) in 2010 with the mission to “empower communities to reach their highest level of health and wellness through evidence-based community-engaged outreach, education and research.”

A Youth Advisory Council serves a pivotal role in guaranteeing that the perspectives and concerns of young people are not just acknowledged, but integrated into decision-making processes affecting them directly. Young people participate in programs – why not ask them what they need? What are their suggestions to your policy discussions that have to do with youth? How might your agency, school, or program benefit from ideas from young people?

Youth Councils offer many benefits, like teaching leadership skills, building connections between youth, adults, and organizations, and maintaining a youth-centric approach to programs and services. However, launching a successful and thriving Youth Advisory Council takes careful planning. We’ve seen groups excited to involve young people without designing an experience that is sustainable and inclusive. When this happens, the YAC is at risk of dissolving, which slows down future efforts in this work. So, as you get started, focus on these 8 steps to help you create an experience that benefits and supports both youth and your organization!

The NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of ourselves and our neighbors through the power of a shared reading experience. The goal of this program is to inspire meaningful conversations, celebrate local creativity, elevate a wide variety of voices and perspectives, and build stronger connections in each community.

In addition to funding for purchasing the books themselves, each grant recipient is provided with resources to help them succeed. That includes outreach materials to gather people from all walks of life and training on how to work with local partners, how to develop public relations strategies, and how to lead meaningful book discussions.

NEA Big Read programs vary and can be as short as a week or as long as several months. Beyond discussions of the book, organizations may choose to include a kick-off event, invite the author for a visit, or have other events inspired by the content and themes of the book, including panel discussions, lectures, film screenings, art exhibitions, theatrical and musical performances, poetry slams, writing workshops and contests, and community storytelling events.

Programming for the 2025-2026 grant cycle will center around the theme OUR NATURE: How Our Physical Environment Can Lead Us to Seek Hope, Courage, and Connection.

22 titles are available in the NEA Big Read Library to inspire community programming this cycle. Each title explores in some way our relationship with the physical environment. Applicants will facilitate book discussions, writing workshops, and creative programming activities that explore this theme and celebrate the unique aspects of their communities.

Submit your Intent to Apply by January 23, 2025 and complete and submit the application form by January 30, 2025.

At the National Student Vote Summit in November, attendees discussed the best ways to boost political involvement after an election that saw worse turnout than in 2020.

Nicholas Crookston, who leads campus engagement efforts for the civic engagement nonprofit Voto Latino, opened the National Student Voter Summit Thursday morning by announcing how much student voter engagement efforts grew this past election cycle. In 2024, around 900 total minority-serving institutions, historically Black colleges and universities, and community colleges celebrated civic holidays, like National Voter Education Week, which takes place in early October, he said. And 47 MSIs, rural colleges and community colleges joined the Ask Every Student initiative, pledging to ask every student on campus to engage in the democratic process.

Other attendees at the summit, held at the University of Maryland, shared specific examples of engagement from their own campuses: football players helping dozens of teammates register to vote, parades to the polls featuring live music and dancing, student podcasters interviewing local candidates.

But despite such efforts, student voting did not appear to soar to unprecedented heights, as many in the nonpartisan student voting space had hoped.
