The Conference on College Composition & Communication (CCCC) invites applications for its Emergent Researcher Awards.

The awards program is intended to support efforts by the organization and its members to become a clear, trusted public voice on writing and writing instruction issues. Grants of up to $5,000 over as many as two years will be awarded in support of projects that can contribute to or influence discussions about literacy and writing instruction in and out of formal education. The initiative also asks recipients to address the impact their research might have on these conversations, conveying the potential implications of their work in at least two final products: one that is addressed to a scholarly audience of researchers and teachers in the field and one that is addressed to a specifically identified more public audience.

Topics and areas of interest include but are not limited to research that produces knowledge about language, literacy, communication, rhetoric, and the teaching, assessment, and technologies of writing at the postsecondary level and beyond; social, racial, and linguistic justice and counter-story as research method and genre in approaches to instruction in rhetoric, language, and literacy; writing in organizations, communities, and/or cultures; transfer of writing ability across contexts; disciplinarity of writing studies/composition; historiography; assessment of writing and literacy; development of writers or writing abilities; and material and working conditions for writing instruction and their influence on teaching and learning.

CCCC encourages projects that employ diverse perspectives and methodologies, including historical, archival, rhetorical, qualitative, quantitative, ethnographic, and textual.

To be eligible, principal investigators must be a member of CCCC at the time of application.

To that end, the foundation has issued an RFP to improve public spaces and contribute to making improvements in a variety of ways, including by increasing activation and stewardship, expanding and diversifying usership, and improving the quality of facilities. The goal of the effort is to produce safer, better maintained, more active, welcoming, and higher-quality public spaces.

Grants made through this RFP will focus on the need for better and more equitable improvements through capital investments, maintenance, operations, and programming of existing public and community spaces. WPF is also eager to support work focused on improving the long-term stewardship of existing public spaces through investments in the physical site and/or at an organizational level through staffing, governance, and personal changes.

WPF has $4.5 million available to advance this objective. There is no minimum or maximum that organizations may request. At least one-third of the total amount awarded under this RFP will be reserved for grants to organizations that have budgets under $1 million per year and/or are led by individuals who are members of groups with a history of discrimination or exclusion. Projects that demonstrate a diversity of funding sources will also be more strongly considered.

Proposed projects must occur in the Philadelphia or Camden. Public spaces are defined by WPF as those that are managed, free, and open to the public. Public spaces include but are not limited to urban gardens or farms, parks, parklets, recreation centers, libraries, and community centers.

Applicants must be recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as 501(c)(3) public charities or operate under a public charity fiduciary. Public charities include community-based organizations, schools and educational institutions, and other types of public-serving groups. Government entities are also eligible to apply.

Applicants are asked to submit a proposal on the foundation online submission system by August 1, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. ET. A WPF team will review all proposals and notify applicants by August 16, 2024, if they have been selected to move forward in the review process. Site visits will be conducted between August 19 and September 6, 2024, with project implementation to begin by November 2024.

The foundation has issued an RFP in support of efforts to access federal funding for climate, environmental justice, and infrastructure for the Philadelphia region.

According to the foundation, the federal government has recently made billions of dollars available for projects and programs that reduce climate pollution, promote clean energy, increase climate resilience, address environmental justice issues, and improve essential infrastructure via the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Federal funding is available in the form of grants, tax incentives, rebates, and financing. But meeting federal funding requirements is notoriously difficult, and special attention is required to ensure that communities most in need of funding can receive it.

WPF aims to support efforts to access federal funding for climate, environmental justice, and infrastructure for the Philadelphia region (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties). The foundation is interested in prioritizing work that is focused on benefiting communities most vulnerable to climate change, environmental burdens, and/or the impacts of inadequate infrastructure.

Barriers to securing federal funding include but are not limited to stakeholder coordination, communications, and community engagement; project development (including concept paper development and technical analysis); community benefits agreement/plan development; grant writing; match requirements; bridge expenses for reimbursable grants and tax credits; legal guidance; tax guidance; and challenges with meeting federal procurement, compliance, and grants administration requirements. The foundation is interested in helping the region address these and other barriers to accessing funds.

WPF has allocated up to $3.5 million to award through this RFP. There is no minimum that organizations may request, and the maximum organizations can receive is $1 million, however, most grants will likely be smaller.

The foundation’s Children and Families program was created to expand access to programs and resources that support the healthy development and academic success of young children in Philadelphia. Through the program, the foundation has issued an RFP to connect families with public benefits and tax credits and help increase the number of individuals in Philadelphia who are able to access the public benefits and tax credits for which they are eligible. Funding will be limited to projects that will positively impact families with young children, ages 0 to 8, living in the City of Philadelphia.

WPF has $7.5 million available to advance this objective, and there is no minimum or maximum amount of funding that organizations may request. At least $1 million will be reserved for grants to organizations that have budgets under $1 million per year and/or are led by individuals who are members of groups with a history of discrimination or exclusion. Project budgets should cover up to three years of funding and may include up to three months for planning.

Organizations that propose projects in partnership with other applicants will be considered on their individual merits. However, the foundation recognizes that making significant progress on the objective is difficult and encourages organizations to include partnerships that leverage complementary strengths, resources, and expertise to reach proposed goals.

In the Harvard Institute of Politics annual survey of 18-29-year-olds, 63% of those who are on the fence about voting in 2024 – and 68% of all respondents – said that nonpartisan guides would help them to vote. To that end, these nonpartisan voter guides summarize candidate positions in concise descriptions of their views and offer links to credible sources. Voters can get a sense of candidate positions through a quick scan, or they can go deeper and follow our links to see candidate quotes or for further information.

Why Anti-Racist Supervision?

Effective supervision contributes directly to organizational impact and success and to creating a culture of belonging. When supervisors intentionally create relationships characterized by mutual respect and trust, staff can bring their best thinking and creative zest because they feel supported. But research shows that white leaders are much more likely to build these kinds of relationships with other white staff leaving their Black, Brown, Indigenous, and other staff of color without the support to succeed. 

​White supervisors have a unique opportunity and responsibility to ensure that everyone they work contributes to mission effectiveness in a meaningful way. In order to do that well, white leaders need to be reflective about how we are building cross race relationships and ensuring that we are aware of the ways we may be unintentionally providing our Black and Brown and Indigenous staff with fewer tools to succeed.

When polling places close, it becomes more difficult for voters to access the ballot box. That’s why Power the Polls is working to recruit a new generation of poll workers excited to serve their communities, help their neighbors vote, and ensure safe access to the ballot box for years to come. We’ve mobilized nearly one million potential poll workers since 2020 — and counting.

Power the Polls was launched in June 2020 by a coalition of businesses and nonprofits, including Civic Alliance, Civic Responsibility Project, Comedy Central, Fair Elections Center, Pizza to the Polls, MTV Entertainment Group, and Center for Secure & Modern Elections. Power the Polls relies on objective data about poll worker requirements and applications collected from over 5,000 jurisdictions assembled by the non-partisan Fair Elections Center.

HOW POWER THE POLLS WORKS

We recruit potential poll workers. We work with a broad coalition of business and nonprofit partners to encourage their networks to become poll workers. When someone signs up through Power the Polls, we direct them to their state or local jurisdiction’s official online application to apply. We also provide resources on the importance of poll workers in ensuring safe and fair elections.

We identify needs for poll workers. We coordinate directly with elections administrators and state-based partners to identify and meet poll worker needs in local communities, including needs for bilingual and tech-savvy poll workers. We have worked with local elections officials, Secretaries of State, and State Election Directors to address poll worker shortages, and we are proud to continue this critical work.

We house a centralized hub for localized poll worker information. Type in any U.S. zip code at powerthepolls.org/search and you’ll find local information on poll worker compensation, hours, application links, and training and voter registration requirements. This objective data is collected and maintained by the nonpartisan Fair Elections Center, as part of the WorkElections project.

Democratic decline in the United States and globally, a lack of confidence in political institutions and an increasingly violent and divisive political climate raise many questions for the state of political learning and civic engagement. A decade ago, a task force commissioned by the United States Department of Education called on colleges and universities to affirm their missions to educate for democracy. Relatively few have made the investment, though dozens of higher education associations and organizations have publicly committed their support to prepare students to address the persistent public issues they are inheriting.

Join the Center for Economic Security and Opportunity at Brookings for a webinar on how opportunity in America is changing. The event will focus on a new study from Raj Chetty, Will Dobbie, Benjamin Goldman, and Crystal Yang of Opportunity Insights with Sonya Porter of the U.S. Census Bureau. The research uses data on 57 million children to show how opportunity is changing rapidly by race and class in America and identifies the sociological forces that are driving these important trends. After a presentation of the report, the New York Times’ David Leonhardt will moderate a panel to discuss the new research and what it means for reshaping opportunity in America.
