The 16th Annual Northeast Media Literacy Conference is going global and online, January 13-14, 2023!

Media literacy education is often seen as part of the solution to the many information and political challenges we face around the world. We hear various stakeholders declare the importance of media literacy education, including policymakers and politicians, educators, researchers, journalists, social media platforms, parents and caregivers, community members, and more.

But media literacy is also a moving target. As our information ecosystems evolve, so do ideas about what it means to move competently and ethically through these media environments. Each stakeholder may have a different conceptualization of what it means to be “media literate” and whose responsibility it is to make progress there. Sometimes those conceptualizations can exist in tension with one another. Sometimes one stakeholder’s conceptualization of media literacy can frame the work of media literacy education in ways that don’t quite fit the conceptualization of another set of stakeholders.

NMLC23 is organized around the theme of RESISTING THE FRAME. The conference registration fee is only $25. Join us to explore three themes that examine these key questions:

Global Media Literacy and Technology Policy

Reimagining Ed Tech in Schools

Propoganda and Persuasion

FEATURED PRESENTER: Adam Maksl

In high school, students learn to deconstruct media messages and benefit from access to scaffolding and frameworks to build their critical thinking skills. Students also are discovering their creative capacities as media makers and gain confidence in self-expression when they have authentic audiences who encounter their multimedia creative work. Increasingly, media literacy competencies of analyzing and creating media are components of civic education, where through discussions of news, journalism, and controversial issues, students learn to participate in the public sphere. But what are the barriers that limit how students can exercise these competencies in their increasingly polarized communities?

Across the country, there are 574 federally recognized Native American tribes that have a government-to-government relationship with the United States. As sovereign nations, they have legal jurisdiction over their lands and citizens. However, until the passing of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 (ICWA), the authority of Tribes to exercise their exclusive jurisdiction over their Native children in child custody proceedings was not recognized. ICWA established procedural guidelines for placement and removal protocols that mandate notice to Native families and Tribes in all pending child custody proceedings to prioritize family integrity and adhere to tribal sovereignty. In recent years, ICWA has been a legal battleground between non-native families seeking to adopt native children and native families trying to keep children connected to their culture and communities. The current legal challenge to ICWA is headed to the Supreme Court, which could either reaffirm the constitutionality of the law acknowledging the special relationship between tribes and the federal government or strike it down as an unconstitutional “race-based” law in violation of equal protection and states’ rights.

Join the Field Center and the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School for a virtual webinar series this fall exploring the history and future of ICWA and the potential implications of the Supreme Court case for native children, families, and tribal sovereignty.
