The mission of the Teagle Foundation is “to support and strengthen liberal arts education, which we see as fundamental to meaningful work, effective citizenship, and a fulfilling life.”

To that end, the foundation invites applications for the Education for American Civic Life initiative, which supports efforts to prepare students to become informed and engaged participants in the civic life of their local and national communities.

According to the foundation, colleges and universities often assume that their incoming students have received prior preparation on fundamental topics such as the formation of the American republic or the drafting of the U.S. Constitution, contention over its meaning, and its amendment over time. On this assumption, they miss critical opportunities to help undergraduates develop a mature understanding of the history and fragility of democracy.

Through the Education for American Civic Life initiative, the foundation seeks to elevate the civic objectives of liberal arts education by partnering with institutions offering bold and coherent initiatives that endow students with the content, skills, and sensibility to participate in a political system designed for self-governance. While progress has been made at many institutions of higher education to promote civic action and various forms of community service as part of the undergraduate experience, the foundation is especially concerned with grounding such action and service in comprehensive civic knowledge through teaching, reading, debate, and discussion centered in the curriculum.

The foundation seeks ambitious projects that confront gaps in undergraduates’ civic knowledge and prepare them for the intellectual demands of democratic participation. Successful proposals will seek to promote learning about the formation of the American republic, the crafting of its constitution, the history of contention over the interpretation of the constitution, the development of representative political structures, and the principles of democracy. The initiative is focused on funding in two areas: 1) anchoring significant questions in democratic thought in local history and community and 2) strengthening preparation for public service. Grants of varying amounts, ranging from $100,000-$300,000 over a 24-36 month period, will be made to each funded project participating in this initiative.

The foundation invites the participation of various institutions, including community colleges, liberal arts colleges, and comprehensive and research universities. Requests from both single institutions and multiple institutions partnering together will be considered.

Concept papers are due December 1, 2022, and upon review, a limited number of applicants will be invited to submit full proposals.

For complete program guidelines and application instructions, see the Teagle Foundation website.

Secondary goals may also focus on one or more of the following: variations in program effects (i.e., test for moderation effects that inform whether effects are stronger for specific groups and/or under certain conditions than other groups or conditions), mechanisms through which effects occur (i.e., test for mediation effects that inform why the program is effective), and cost-benefit analyses of the costs of the program (start-up and ongoing operational costs) with its estimated monetary benefits to determine the net worth or use associated with the program.

The foundation will award support for up to two key personnel from the evaluation team and one practitioner or service provider from the program to attend one conference in the last (or only) year of the project, with an allowable cost of $1,500 per person. Projects may span up to three years.

The Panera Bread Foundation envisions a world in which young people can unlock their full potential and dare to dream—a world in which opportunity and economic mobility are accessible and equitable for all.

The foundation’s grant program awards organizations with a common vision and purpose of investing in children and youth to become leaders. To that end, nonprofit organizations will award grants that provide access to education, opportunity, and mentorship to at-risk, underserved, or historically underrepresented children and youth. Current 2022 Panera Bread Foundation grant partners predominantly serve high school and middle school students. The programs for high school students help youth stay in and do well in school, graduate high school, attend post-secondary school, or find a long-term career path. In contrast, middle school programs are focused on strengthening learning skills, enhancing hard and soft skills, and helping children build healthy relationships with trusted adults through mentorship programs. Other programs serve students by specializing in STEM or STEAM programs.

Grants between $25,000 and $150,000 will be awarded to recipients in early 2023.

Applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits serving ages 10-18 planning to start a new program or expand an existing program focused on college readiness, skills building, workforce or leadership development, or mentoring.

For complete program guidelines and application instructions, see the Panera Bread Foundation website.

As part of our Fall symposiums we are now combining presenters to learn with and from each other. Mathew M V Mathai of NOCER-INDIA and Mark Pomerantz of Worldshapers! present the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Symposium.

Date and Time: Thursday, October 27, 2022, 3:30-5:00 PM

Description:

Mathew M V Mathai: GROSS HAPPY VILLAGE
Selecting one person from one Village we are empowering 100 persons from 100 Villages. The Selected people will Known as -RURAL AMBASSADOR- they and their team will empower the village 10 families in groups.

Mark Pomerantz: Evolutionary Social Entrepreneurship
A new generation of entrepreneurial leaders is needed to rebalance society so that it is sustainable. The challenge to the generation of young people is evolving a balanced, collaborative way of life resilient enough to weather the coming events of the 21st century. These include pandemics, climate change events, and global economic and political instability. This workshop deals with evolutionary social entrepreneurship as a problem solving approach to these enormous social problems which also include creative aging, economic and class equity, and need for educational reforms. Implications for practice include an emphasis on social enterprise development of regenerative technologies that reduce waste, energy use and the percentage of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Evolutionary social enterprises could be involved with other aspects of the regenerative economy in such projects as the redevelopment of areas of poverty and decay using replicable models incorporating indigenous, locally produced and recycled materials, sustainable agricultural practices, and local labor, thus supporting the local economy and reducing the carbon footprint of the project. Implications for pedagogy include the development of trans-disciplinary curriculum in social entrepreneurship emphasizing technology and leadership aspects as much as business and financial elements. We also promote the formation of an “Invisible College” of savants of emotional, empathic, and collaborative intelligence that can bring the nation and the planet into a healing balance.
