Job Description

PHL is seeking a qualified, highly motivated individual to direct the workforce development program within the airport. The program currently includes: Summer Internship Program for college and high school students; a College Intern Program for specific majors and a Hospitality Careers Program (HCP). The Summer Internship Program has approximately 75 participants annually that are assigned to various divisions throughout the airport. The College Intern Program is in collaboration with local universities in specific areas of study and the individuals are assigned to a technical professional to supervise projects. HCP was launched in 2018, it is a workforce development program that prepares individual job seekers, for positions in the hospitality, janitorial or customer service fields. In addition, this position would be responsible for developing an apprenticeship program to meet PHL’s need for skilled trades workers. The airport prides themselves on creating pathways for employees and jobseekers, by offering training and programs that equips them with the necessary skills to advance their careers or enter the workforce with the tools to succeed.

The Director of Workforce Development will partner with PHL leadership, consultants, stakeholders and work collaboratively with the City’s Office of Workforce Development in the design, development, implementation and management of the PHL Workforce Development Program. This includes participant recruitment and selection, program administration, curriculum/courseware development, training delivery, career and workplace readiness, career pathway alignment, job placement assistance, and stakeholder engagement.

The Program Director will strive to ensure that all PHL workforce development programs; including HCP, Internship and Apprenticeship Programs are aligned with the City’s larger workforce development plans, goals, and strategies.

To that end, WorkRise has issued a request for proposals for pilot projects that test and evaluate public- and private-sector interventions designed to improve the economic mobility of low-wage workers. Through the RFP, WorkRise will award up to $2.5 million in grants.

WorkRise funds scholars and practitioners on the frontiers of understanding and improving economic mobility in the U.S. labor force, particularly mobility for workers in low-wage jobs, people of color, women, early-career workers, workers with disabilities, unemployed and underemployed people, and other historically disadvantaged segments of the labor force. This RFP seeks proposals for rigorously designed pilot studies. Projects that engage a diverse set of researchers, including scholars from under-resourced and traditionally underrepresented organizations and institutions, are strongly encouraged. WorkRise will prioritize pilots that leverage technology, data science, and machine learning to improve job search, hiring, or training; enhance the quality of job standards, especially at small- and medium-sized enterprises; create alternative pathways into high-wage industries; reskill workers at risk for displacement; close digital skills gaps and the digital divide in support of worker economic mobility; or bolster economic security embedded in employment and training contexts.

For this round of funding, proposals must directly address one or more topics that include search and matching (the role of technology and data science in job searches or hiring), skills and training (targeted skill-building and the role of technology and data science), a 360-degree perspective of work and workers (addressing the financial security of workers and the digital divide), and employer practices (helping small- and medium-sized business create and maintain quality jobs).

WorkRise’s definition of pilot studies includes both feasibility studies such as small-scale pilots to establish a proof of concept or determine whether a larger pilot should be pursued and fully developed or larger-scale pilots designed to identify specific quantitative or qualitative outcomes.

Project budgets up to $500,000 will be considered though smaller budget requests are strongly encouraged.

The majority of WorkRise funds should be used for research, data collection, evaluation, and communication. A small portion of funds may be used for program or operation support that strengthens the evaluation, such as funding a specific treatment arm, offering incentives to program participants, or compensating program staff for their time supporting evaluation activities like providing administrative data.

Pilots must include a partnership between a research team and one or more practitioners, employers, or policy makers. The research team may be housed inside the institution hosting the intervention (e.g., a nonprofit with an in-house research arm and a policy or practice arm) or at an outside institution (e.g., a university or research organization). However, researchers must have the independence to publish their results, regardless of findings, in a manner transparent to external audiences. The intervention institution may include employers, service providers (nonprofit or for-profit), unions or worker centers, advocacy organizations, or government agencies (local, state, or federal).

The WITH Foundation was created to provide financial support to organizations that promote comprehensive health care for adults with developmental disabilities.

Grants (generally between $30,000 and $50,000) will be awarded in support of programs that improve the delivery of health care to adult consumers with developmental disabilities and include at least one aspect of improving health practitioner competency through education and/or training programs; addressing the current inadequate reimbursement systems; advancing innovations in formal care coordination; enhancing public awareness regarding the inadequacies of developmentally disabled care to advance systemic change; increasing understanding of supported decision making in healthcare settings; promoting national efforts in digital health that support designers and developers to include the perspectives/experiences of the IDD community within the design process to create better technology for all, including social policy research; and identifying and overcoming barriers to high-quality healthcare access.

Applicants must have tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status as defined by the Internal Revenue Service. While applications from the San Francisco Bay Area may be given preferential consideration, applications from other areas in the United States are not excluded.

Letters of intent are due April 11, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. PT, and selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal on May 31, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. PT.

Current Grant Cycle

The Frankenthaler Climate Initiative is an energy and climate granting program launched by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation in partnership with RMI and Environment and Culture Partners, and is the first program of its kind in the United States for the visual arts and is the most extensive private national grantmaking program to address climate change through cultural institutions.

To that end, grants will be awarded to support the planning or implementation of capital projects that reduce emissions by improving efficiency in building energy use. Institutions of all sizes that have visual arts as a key part of their mission and programming are encouraged to apply (including collecting and non-collecting institutions and visual arts schools). The initiative will fund energy efficiency and clean energy generation projects in the following categories:

Scoping Grants: Intended to help museums understand their energy efficiency needs and clean energy options by assessing with an independent environmental engineer. This work might include professional fees and monitoring or testing for energy and systems audits, recommendations on initial no/low-cost actions, and recommended areas for planning larger interventions to increase efficiency, reduce total consumption, and access renewable sources. These grants will range from $10,000 to $25,000 over one to two years. They will benefit institutions that are getting started reducing their emissions footprint while reducing their reliance on fossil fuels to heat, cool, and power their buildings.

Technical Assistance Grants: To help an institution specify and accurately budget a project for which the initial inquiries are complete. This may include providing designs, specifications, and connections to energy services companies (ESCOs) skilled at project support and third-party financing. These grants will range from $25,000 to $50,000 over one to two years.

Implementation Grants: To directly address institutions’ climate impact by supporting lower-cost, higher-payback items. These can also serve as seed money leading to matches for a larger capital project. These grants range from $50,000 to $100,000 and may take up to two years or more.

The portal for grant submission will be open on April 3, 2022, and will close on April 17, 2022.

To be eligible, the institution must be physically located in the U.S. or its territories. There are no institutional or budget size limitations or preferences. Museums of all sizes are encouraged to apply.

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes celebrates inspiring, public-spirited young people from diverse backgrounds across North America. Each year, the Barron Prize honors 25 outstanding young leaders ages 8 to 18 who have made a significant positive difference to people and the environment.

To that end, awards will be given to those who have demonstrated positive spirit, courage, intelligence, generosity, and high moral purpose; shown initiative, tenacity, and unselfishness in pursuit of their goals; accomplished something with inspirational value—something that could inspire others to make a difference; or do more than survive a difficult personal challenge. Their heroism must have made an impact on the world beyond themselves.

Applicants must have organized and led an extraordinary service activity that has benefited other people or the planet we share. The service activity must have been initiated and motivated primarily by the winner and cannot have been done solely to complete an assignment for school or work.

Recipients will receive an awards package including $10,000 for their higher education or service project, recognition gifts, Young Heroes materials, networking opportunities, and media coverage.

Applicants must be between the ages of 8 and 18 (not yet age 19) and permanent residents of, and currently residing in, the United States or Canada.

Co-founded by the Women’s Sports Foundation and espnW in 2014, the Sports 4 Life initiative was created based on the knowledge that while sports participation offers tremendous life-long benefits, young girls of color are disproportionately excluded.

The program aims to increase the participation and retention of Black, African-American, Hispanic, and/or Native American girls, inclusive of American Indian and Alaska Native communities. The 2022 Sports 4 Life Partner funding cycle is open, with a minimum of $280,000 to be awarded this year. Grants may be used for coaching, curriculum, equipment, uniforms, transportation, facility rental, tournaments and/or team-building activities, all while fostering the Sports 4 Life benefits: leadership, self-esteem, confidence, and perseverance.

Applicants must demonstrate that their program serves predominately Black, African-American, Hispanic, and/or Native American girls (representing more than 70 percent of the enrolled program participants); can deliver structured, developmental sports programming to girls ages 11 to 18 through experienced and committed leadership; can provide ongoing funding to implement sports programming after the life of the funding has expired; and complies with all of the applicable federal civil rights laws, including the requirements about developing and submitting an Equal Employment Opportunity Plan (EEOP), reporting findings of discrimination, and providing language services to Limited English Proficiency (LEP) persons.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit schools, parks and recreation departments, nonprofit organizations, or amateur sports leagues.

Letters of Intent are due March 25, 2022, and selected applicants will be invited to submit a full grant application.

About this project:

PHENND is seeking to engage three PHENND Fellows VISTA leaders for the 22-23 service year. PHENND Fellows places passionate and talented people with local Philadelphia nonprofits, schools, and the School District of Philadelphia as AmeriCorps VISTA members. The program has a three-fold mission (1) Support local nonprofits and schools in their efforts to address issues of poverty ((2) Train and retain local talent to stay and work in Philadelphia and (3) Develop the next generation of nonprofit leaders.

As a VISTA leader, you will support and mentor VISTA Fellows throughout the service year, supporting them with their VISTA projects and the development of personal and professional skills. You will also support the PHENND Fellows program overall by specializing in one of the following areas: alumni engagement and special events, training and professional development or outreach and recruitment. To serve as a VISTA Leader, you must have completed one year of service with AmeriCorps.

Benefits & Compensation

As a VISTA Leader, you will earn a living stipend of approximately $18,001 per year. VISTA Leaders are provided health coverage and loan forbearance for any current federal student loans. Upon completion of the full year, they also receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of $6495 that can be used to pay for future educational expenses and/or pay off federal student loans. SEPTA Transpass provided. Note, we expect most sites to return to in-person service, though there may be some that are virtual and/or hybrid.

All PHENND Fellows will also receive extensive professional development as a cohort, in addition to any site specific training. PHENND Fellows participate in monthly diversity/equity training, “Dinners with a Civic Leader,” and other training/professional development. PHENND Fellows are also allowed to take up to two courses at the La Salle Nonprofit Center paid for by the program.  PHENND Fellows will also be provided with a monthly transpass or have local travel (non-commuting) reimbursed.

Danielle Purifoy is assistant professor of Geography at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a Ph.D. in Environmental Policy and African American Studies from Duke University. Her research focuses on the racial politics and law of development in Black towns and communities. Danielle is the Board Chair of the North Carolina Environmental Justice Network and is also the former Race and Place editor of Scalawag, a media organization devoted to Southern storytelling, journalism, and the arts. She has written, edited, or provided research for several media outlets including Inside Higher Ed, Scalawag, Newsday, The Durham Herald Sun, and The Guardian.

The Institute is grounded in adult experiential learning and features exclusive access to My Tenure Trek® (MTT), a state-of-the-art diversity simulation. MTT sensitizes participants to the systems and structures within STEM higher education that marginalize certain groups and undermine the broadening participation agenda of our nation.

An overwhelming majority of past participants in the Institute have reported an increase in their ability to: 1) create the conditions for personal change to occur, 2) navigate the institutional politics of change, and 3) build effective teams that are courageous in leading change initiatives and interventions.

The goal of the RET program at Penn State is to provide opportunities for the participating STEM teachers to engage in hands-on research projects with faculty mentors in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Nanotechnology. Teachers with expertise in engineering, technology, science and math, as well as pre-service teachers, with broad interests across disciplines are eligible and encouraged to apply.

The selected cohort of educators will engage in six-weeks of research with applications to bio-engineering, chemistry, electronics, materials science, optics, opto-electronics, physics, and/or the life sciences. Additional professional development activities include seminars, demonstrations, and workshops geared towards connecting state-of-the-art research with K-12 education. In 2022, concepts of sustainability will become a core component of the professional development content. Teachers will earn a $6000 stipend ($5000 for pre-service teachers). For non-local participants, housing and reasonable travel expenses will be covered. (Meals are not included.) At the end of the summer, RET Fellows will present their projects at a scientific mini-symposium to their research collaborators, peer teachers, and undergraduates.
