The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation invites applications for its Accelerator Program Grants, a grant opportunity that provides nonprofits with data support, tools, and expertise to develop and test a data hypothesis.

The program aims to advance nonprofit data maturity while equipping nonprofit organizations with the tools and expertise they require to develop and test proof-of-concept data experiments. Accelerator nonprofits selected for these grants gain up to six months of experience using an advanced analytics “sandbox” that can handle large, complex datasets — foregoing the need for nonprofits to set up and invest in a test infrastructure before knowing if it’s a good fit for their teams. The theme for this year’s cohort is Data to Drive Climate Action, and nonprofits working across a range of climate change and environmental issues are invited to submit applications. Up to twelve climate action organizations will be selected for the next cohort, which runs for nine months in 2022.

Accelerator nonprofits demonstrate a commitment to shared learning — including documenting and setting an example for how others in their field can advance nonprofit data maturity in an impactful, responsible, inclusive way.

Nonprofits receive direct technical support from the foundation’s in-house Data and Society engineering team, access to an advanced data management platform, and up to $100,000 in supplementary support for expenses related to the data project.

Expressions of Interest are due August 31, 2021. Selected organizations will be asked to join a series of exploratory and technical project-scoping conversations before being invited to submit a formal proposal for consideration. Final decisions will be made in November 2021, with ten to twelve Accelerator projects launched in 2022.

For complete program guidelines and application instructions, see the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation website.

Deadline: August 31, 2021 (Expression of Interest)

At the end of 2020, as part of our strategic planning process, our staff developed six new core values to guide our work: justice, community, integrity, empathy, pride, and tenacity. These values provided the perfect framework for the story we wanted to tell.
Being vaccinated against COVID-19 results in an eight-fold reduction of risk if you’re fully vaccinated compared to when you are not. If you’re fully vaccinated, you have a 25-fold reduction of your risk of being hospitalized or dying from COVID. The COVID vaccines protect people very well and are the best way to avoid a severe enough infection that could end up in hospitalization.

Simply put: the COVID vaccines work extremely well and are saving lives every day.

The City has a vested interest in ensuring that all staff are protected as thoroughly as possible from severe COVID infection and death. That’s why as of September 1, the City will be instituting the following new policies.

The early childhood education (ECE) sector in the United States is in a period of disruption and transition. Even before COVID-19, the sector grappled with challenges such as extremely low wages for workers and uneven program quality. The pandemic exacerbated existing challenges and created many new ones, including sudden, sharp declines in ECE enrollment and attendance. These challenges carry significant risk, given evidence that early learning experiences can shape children’s educational and life trajectories. On the other hand, this is a period of opportunity for ECE. Innovative local and state leaders have made use of federal funds provided by the American Rescue Plan Act in ways that could produce both short-term and long-term benefits. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has made improving the ECE sector one of its top priorities, offering an assortment of proposals. This includes a proposal for federally subsidized, tuition-free universal pre-K. The fate of these proposals—and the direction of the ECE sector—remains unclear.

The Brown Center on Education Policy at Brookings will host a virtual panel discussion that considers the present and future of ECE in the United States. The panel will consist of experts with backgrounds in ECE policy, practice, and research. It will examine where the sector stands—almost 18 months into the pandemic—and where it might be and should be headed.

This event will take place on Tuesday, August 17 at 2 p.m. Click here to register.

Collective Impact is also very much an evolving body of practice whose effectiveness is being accelerated as the growing number of practitioners who are now implementing it share their insights and experiences.

The Collaborating for Equity and Justice Framework (CEJF) (Wolff, et al. 2017 was developed as a counter to the popular Collective Impact (CI) approach (Kania & Kramer 2011). CEJF moves beyond CI by fore-fronting equity and justice through six foundational principles:

Explicitly address issues of social and economic injustice and structural racism.

Employ a community development approach in which residents have equal power in determining the SECs agenda and resource allocation.

Employ community organizing as an intentional strategy and as part of the process. Work to build resident leadership and power.

Focus on policy, systems, and structural change.

Build on the community engagement literature and scholarship.

Construct core functions for the collaborative based on equity and justice that provide basic facilitating structures and build member ownership and leadership.

This course is taught with the purpose of translating global rhetoric to local action. Upon completion of the course participants will leave with a collective impact strategy document to create societal impact and influence systems and policies within their own ecosystem. Participants will also have an opportunity to publish an article within the Social Innovations Journal.
