Brave of Heart Fund® Invites Applications From Family Members of Frontline Healthcare Workers Who Lost Their Lives Due to COVID-19

The Brave of Heart Fund® was established in partnership with the foundations of New York Life and Cigna to provide grants to eligible family members of frontline healthcare workers and healthcare volunteers who lost their lives because of COVID-19.

The grants will provide basic and continuing financial support for common needs, such as funeral costs, medical care, counseling, food, educational expenses of children and other dependents currently in school, mortgage or rent payments, and immediate living expenses, as these family members manage the impact of the COVID-19 crisis and begin to move forward.

Two forms of grants are available. Applicants may be eligible for an initial grant of $15,000 to alleviate the cost of immediate needs related to funeral costs and other essential household expenses. A second grant of up to $60,000 may also be available for continuing needs and longer-term expenses for up to six months, subject to income eligibility and documentation of financial need. This second grant is intended to help defray costs such as housing, utilities, educational expenses of dependents currently in school, childcare, clothing, food, transportation, counseling, and medical expenses. The exact amount of grants will depend on various factors, including, without limitation, the applicant’s demonstration of financial need and availability of funds. The final determination of grant eligibility and amounts will be made by E4E Relief. Grants and grant amounts are not guaranteed and are subject to the availability of funds remaining within the fund.

In addition, through the program, Cigna behavioral health will provide emotional support and services, which are available to anyone facing challenges related to COVID-19 and include advice for coping with stress, fear, and anxiety, living with grief and loss, building resiliency, self-care, and relaxation techniques, as well as finding childcare and financial best practices in uncertain times. Special topics and on-demand webinars are created especially for healthcare workers.

Potential applicants should begin the grant process by verifying eligibility on the Brave of Heart Fund website. This verification portal is available to family members of healthcare workers and healthcare volunteers who lost their lives because of COVID-19 to submit information to verify eligibility to apply for a Brave of Heart Fund grant. Once verified, the eligible family member will be invited to apply directly to E4E Relief for available grants.

For complete program guidelines and application instructions, see the Brave of Heart Fund website.

Deadline: December 31, 2021

Chalkbeat looks at the pandemic’s impact on three Black Chicago teenage boys. “In Chicago and across the country, there is growing evidence that this year has hit Black and Latino boys — young men like Derrick, Nathaniel, and Leonel — harder than other students. Amid rising gun violence, a national reckoning over race, bitter school reopening battles, and a deadly virus that took the heaviest toll on Black and Latino communities, the year has tested not only these teens, but also the school systems that have historically failed many of them. It has severed precarious ties to school, derailed college plans, and pried gaping academic disparities even wider. But in this moment of upheaval, educators and advocates also see a chance to rethink how schools serve boys of color. With billions in federal stimulus funds on the way, the crisis is fueling a patchwork of efforts to bring diversity to the teaching cadre, support college-bound teens, and more, though a bolder, wholesale overhaul is yet to emerge. The stakes are high. Even before pandemic disruption set in, boys of color were most likely to drop out, skip college, and end up unemployed. ‘This is a critical moment of opportunity to help young men of color,’ said Adrian Huerta, a faculty member in the Pullias Center for Higher Education at the University of Southern California, who studies the educational experiences of boys and young men of color. ‘It’s a national issue, and it will take a national investment.’”

An analysis from Pew Research Center explores the differences between low- and high-income adults and use of technology and digital access. Roughly a quarter of adults with household incomes below $30,000 a year say they do not own a smartphone, and about four in ten adults with lower incomes do not have home broadband services (43 percent) or a desktop or laptop computer (41 percent). By comparison, roughly six in ten adults living in households earning $100,000 or more a year (63 percent) report having home broadband services, a smartphone, a desktop or laptop computer and a tablet, compared with 23 percent of those living in lower-income households. As of early 2021, 27 percent of adults living in households earning less than $30,000 a year were smartphone-only internet users – meaning they own a smartphone but do not have broadband internet at home. Research suggests that this reliance on smartphones means that the less affluent are more likely to use them for tasks traditionally reserved for larger screens such as seeking out and applying for jobs.

Michelle Rhone-Collins, CEO of LIFT, describes the organization’s experience during the pandemic and her “skeptical optimism” that the country as a whole has learned more about how to help families find more opportunity and prosperity. LIFT is a 20-year-old national organization with nearly one thousand members and a mission to partner with parents and invest in them to break generational cycles of poverty. LIFT matches parents with trained coaches who support setting educational, financial, and employment goals and developing action plans to meet those goals. Rhone-Collins says that when the pandemic hit, families expressed the need for cash to help make ends meet, resulting in LIFT raising and distributing over $1 million. She believes the pandemic showed that bold action is possible and stresses the need to dig deeper to combat systemic disparities as the country begins to recover. “We need to center our focus on those who have been most marginalized, structurally and historically, and know starting there is going to benefit everyone,” Rhone-Collins says. “We need to constantly keep these lessons front of mind now, as we’re in this moment of ‘building back better.’”
