It is Pennsylvania State Law – Environmental Education Act of 1993 – that the Commonwealth is to have environmental education standards for children to learn. And that Pennsylvania, with its history of conservation and its abundant natural resources, has long been known as a leader in environmental education.

If you think that children in grades K-12 in Pennsylvania should learn about the environment and understand how ecological systems work, then you need to make your opinion known now. It is Pennsylvania State Law – Environmental Education Act of 1993 – that the Commonwealth is to have environmental education standards for children to learn. And that Pennsylvania, with its history of conservation and its abundant natural resources, has long been known as a leader in environmental education.

The last legislatively approved set of K-12 academic standards are dated 2002. As you may or may not be aware, the Pennsylvania K-12 Environment & Ecology and the Pennsylvania K-12 Science & Technology Standards are currently under review. The revision process began in September 2019 and on September 9, 2020, the newly proposed “integrated” science standards were unanimously approved by the State Board of Education.

Unfortunately, the newly proposed integrated science standards have largely omitted Environment & Ecology. Without explicit standards for Environment & Ecology, educators will not be responsible for covering the content and our youth will lack basic understanding of current environmental, ecological, and agricultural topics. The future leaders of our Commonwealth deserve to have rich, environmental, and agricultural education opportunities.

We encourage you to submit a written comment to the State Board of Education imploring them to explicitly include Environment & Ecology (and specifically Agriculture & Society and IPM) in the newly revised standards. Only comments that mention specific content that is missing will be counted. Content from the currently legislated standards (2002) that were identified as having one or no connections to the proposed standards can be found here. Please submit a comment as a private citizen, and spread the word to other formal and non-formal educators, parents, businesses, communities, etc.

Please encourage as many individuals as possible to send comments. The reviewers of the submitted comments will be counting the number of comments asking for certain things, and then make a determination to allow the proposed standards to go through a round of revisions/updates, or to finalize these as is.

How do I comment to voice my concern?

Founded in 1918 by Edith and Milton Latham, the Latham Foundation for the Promotion of Humane Education teaches kindness and respect for all living things by promoting humane education as a core value that has a positive and effective impact on society. The hierarchy of humane education included in the memorialized Latham Steps are: kindness to animals, kindness to each other, kindness to other people, kindness to our country, kindness to other nations, and kindness to the world.

To that end, the foundation welcomes applications for its Humane Education Grant program, which awards grants of up to $10,000 in support of programs focused on animal-assisted activities that demonstrate people and animals working together to benefit both, and include humane education. This year, the foundation is giving priority to programs that include services for active military, veterans, and their families.

To be eligible, applicants must be U.S.-based organizations. While nonprofit organizations will have priority, grants will not be limited to those who have attained 501(c)(3) status.

Proposals will be accepted from July 1 through July 10, 2021.

For complete program guidelines and application instructions, see the Latham Foundation for the Promotion of Humane Education website.

NextFifty Initiative is a Colorado-based private foundation dedicated to funding mission-driven initiatives that improve the lives of older adult populations and their caregivers.

To that end, the organization is accepting applications for its Flexible Support Grant program, which will award grants in support of activities that improve the lives and capacities of adults age 50 and older and/or their caregivers, including the aging-disabled population.

Flexible Support grants are restricted to organizations or programs that serve (or seek to serve) older adults, but the use of funds is flexible, and applicants will be asked about their organization’s and/or program’s goals and how the funding will support achieving those goals, instead of being asked to articulate a specific project plan and budget. The organization is required to direct at least 80 percent of its funding to benefit the people of Colorado; however, entities outside of Colorado may apply for Flexible Support grants.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit entities organized under sections 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) of the IRS code in good standing with the state or jurisdiction in which the organization resides. In addition, governmental entities are also eligible for funding. Organizations may apply through a fiscal sponsor.

Before submitting a request, applicants are encouraged to speak with a staff member. For requests of $250,000 or more, a call is required. To schedule, email info@next50initiative.org, or call 303-547-1800 by July 2, 2021.
