Location: Camden, NJ

Uncommon Schools is a non-profit network of 55 outstanding public charter schools in grades K-12 across New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Our mission is to start and manage outstanding urban public charter schools that close the achievement gap and prepare students from low-income backgrounds for success in college and beyond. We are accomplishing that mission every day, with a college graduation rate that is well above the national average and thousands of stories of our students and alumni achieving their dreams.

Job Description

At Uncommon Schools, we know running exceptional schools takes more than great instruction—it also takes exemplary operations! Uncommon Schools’ operations leaders work relentlessly to ensure that our faculty maximizes time and energy on student achievement. We design, implement, and refine systems that anticipate the needs of our school community. As service-oriented leaders, we tackle problems, share standard methodologies across campuses, and respond to urgent needs. We partner to build an academic and cultural environment which supports our ultimate goal: ensuring that every student will earn a college degree.

The Operations Fellowship is a year-long, full-time program that prepares you to become a Director of Operations (DOO) of an Uncommon school. As DOO, you co-lead alongside a Principal, partnering to ensure your students receive an exemplary education.

The Fellowship is based on a foundation of four core elements that are aligned to the competencies of Uncommon leaders. Each element is designed to build Fellows’ capacity towards becoming effective Directors of Operations. These include Fellowship Deliverables and School Immersion; Evaluation and Feedback; Operations Leadership Meetings, and Professional Development.

Fellowship Deliverables and School Immersion

Fellows are placed at an existing Uncommon school and serve as full-time members of the school’s operations team. They engage in operations work at their host school, tackle Uncommon-wide operations projects, and conduct observations and analysis of operational systems. Fellows are responsible for completing a variety of pre-determined deliverables designed to provide active learning that supports the development of their leadership.

Evaluation and Feedback

Fellows receive coaching and feedback from their Associate Chief Operating Officer and host DOO. This support is rooted in their Individualized Development Plans, which are customized around their strengths and areas of growth.

Operations Leadership Meetings

Fellows meet periodically with current DOOs, other Fellows in their region, and Fellows across all of Uncommon to share and problem solve around current cross-organization operational challenges and to build their network of current leaders.

Professional Development

Starting in the summer, Fellows engage in professional development focusing on Cultural Leadership, Management, and Operational Leadership. Each session will be led by our experienced group of Associate Chief Operating Officers, current leaders, Home Office teams, and a select group of external partners. Some examples of professional development sessions provided to our Fellows are Connecting with and Leading Teachers; Difficult Conversations; Managing Teams and Groups; Financial Management, and School Transportation, Food Services, Health & Safety.

Under the circumstances, the foundation also aims to be more accommodating in considering the kinds of equipment or expenses it can fund.

Funding is typically directed to K-12 schools. Educational nonprofits and universities working with K-12 teachers are occasionally considered, but please call the foundation first.

As students return to school, whether virtual or in class, there is more we need to understand and think through if we are to meet the COVID-19 crisis head on and deal with the consequences of the interruption and disruptions to learning that the pandemic has imposed on the education system.

According to a recently released report from the Economic Policy Institute – COVID-19 and student performance, equity, and U.S. education policy: Lessons from pre-pandemic research to inform relief, recovery, and rebuilding – it will be critical to identify:

which students are struggling most and how much learning and development they have lost out on,

which factors are impeding their learning, and which ones are preventing teachers from teaching these children,

and which investments must be made to address the negative consequences of COVID-19 on education performance and equity and to rebuild stronger.

EPI’s report offers insights on what to expect based on research into a host of factors leading to disruptions in learning, including summer learning losses and chronic absenteeism, as well as education in other emergencies. The report draws on the reviews to offer a three-pronged plan for schools and the U.S. education system: immediate relief, short-term recovery, and long-term rebuilding.

Join us for a discussion, including opening remarks from Randi Weingarten, the president of the 1.7 million-member American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, about the state of COVID-19 and education and what needs to be done now to support educators and mitigate the damage to student performance, especially the most vulnerable children.

The Penn Community Scholars Program is a 12-session virtual training series being offered to representatives of community-based organizations interested in learning more about the research process and building community-academic partnerships. Program components include: an introduction to community-academic partnerships, challenges and opportunities partnering with academics, building a logic model, evaluating impact, developing a winning pitch, and more.
Ten to twelve community-based organizations will be selected via a competitive application process and may have 1 individual apply from their organization who will present a pitch. Individuals who complete all twelve sessions and make a final pitch presentation will receive a stipend for participation.

“The Community Scholars Program was one of the most professionally satisfying learning experiences I’ve ever had. I have been talking about the power of the program with lots of colleagues. It gave us the opportunity to think more deeply and carefully about what it takes to create responsible and productive research partnerships … the program also gave me new and extremely valuable insights into the process of defining a project and pitching it to funders.” (Penn Community Scholar, 2017)

“The Community Scholars Program helped our organization examine the work that we do from an academic and funding perspective. It allowed us to think about outcomes and data and how they may appeal to those looking to invest in programming that strengthen individuals and communities.” (Penn Community Scholar, 2018)

We have developed IMPaCT, a nationally-recognized, evidenced-based Community Health Worker (CHW) model that has served more than 10,000 patients in Philadelphia. Given interest in the program, we are looking to hire a committed, collaborative individual to provide leadership and management for growth, drive quality improvement to ensure we continue to provide the best care, and help shape population health programs within Philadelphia and Penn Medicine. Our IMPaCT model, which has been featured on National Public Radio and in the New York Times, is scientifically proven to improve primary care access, chronic disease control, and mental health while reducing hospital days by 65%. More than 1,000 organizations have accessed our tools and we are currently working with more than three dozen organizations across 18 states to create, launch and sustain effective CHW programs. We are part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, which provides competitive salaries and exceptional benefits, including an annual tuition benefit.
