The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation endeavors to strengthen, promote, and, where necessary, defend the contributions of the humanities and the arts to human flourishing and to the well-being of diverse and democratic societies.

For the purposes of this call, community-based archives are defined as collections of materials gathered, collected, and shared primarily by members of a marginalized community to document their collective histories. These archives play an important role in combatting what UCLA assistant professor of archival studies Michelle Caswell calls the “symbolic annihilation” of marginalized communities from mainstream memory institutions and in recognizing that they are essential to the creation of a more inclusive and poly-vocal American story.

To that end, awards ranging between $50,000 and $100,000 for up to two years will be awarded in support of community-based archives that represent and serve communities marginalized due to oppression based on race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, class, sexuality, religion, or ability.

The following areas of need will be supported: operational support for the organization, including general support for staff, space, and utilities; collections care, including the acquisition of new materials, physical and digital storage fees, and access and preservation efforts; and programming activities, including events, exhibitions, and publications.

To be eligible, organizations must be located in the United States or one of its territories; be tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or have an organization with 501(c)(3) status serve as a fiscal sponsor; and have an annual operating budget of no more than $1 million.

See the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation website for complete program guidelines and application instructions.

Deadline: July 1, 2020

Deadline: July 1, 2020 (Letters of Inquiry)

The New Earth Foundation was founded in 1997 by John Bigelow Loveland, who upon receiving a family inheritance dating back to his great-grandfather, a self-made magnate in nickel mining, decided to donate his inheritance and allocate it for benevolent, peaceful, and harmony-furthering activities.

To that end, NEF welcomes applications for innovative projects with the potential to enhance life on our planet, brighten the future, and further peace. The foundation will award grants in support of pioneering yet practical projects in many fields of endeavor, including but not limited to environmental initiatives that are working to help eliminate pollution and to save the planet’s ecosystems; community efforts that create models of social sustainability; educational innovations that prepare youth to become the socially responsible leaders of the future; and/or strategies that offer economic improvement and opportunities. NEF particularly seeks projects with potential to be replicated so that excellent ideas and work can multiply and benefit many.

The foundation prioritizes smaller, newer 501(c)(3) organizations so that the gift can make a more significant contribution to the work of the recipient organization.

To be eligible, candidates must be tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service. Organizations without such status may apply under an umbrella organization or fiscal sponsor, although the application must be accompanied by a letter of agreement detailing the project and the nature of the sponsoring organization’s support or involvement.

Letters of inquiry are due July 1. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application by October 1, 2020.

See the New Earth Foundation website for complete program guidelines, application instructions, and previously supported projects.

To that end, the COVID Decision Modeling Initiative (CDMI) will support the development of decision models that inform the urgent needs of decision makers responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CDMI has several specific goals with respect to facilitating responsive decision modeling research, including determining key priorities and critical questions where decision modeling can support better decisions and outcomes during the pandemic; leveraging the SMDM repository of models and network of decision modelers to address COVID-19; and funding six to ten projects with rapid impact potential.

To optimize the success of decision modeling projects selected for funding, the research team will coordinate efforts from their institutions along with the SMDM COVID-19 Modeling Special Committee to provide connectivity between decision makers and decision modelers and disseminate the combined CDMI results to the public at large. Johns Hopkins University will administer six to ten agreements for projects with anticipated impact within four to six months of the grant start date.

Modelers who have submitted a model description of their research to the SMDM repository and/or are willing to submit modeling description from the output of this grant opportunity to the public-facing SMDM repository are eligible to apply. All applicants must demonstrate the ability to manage grant awards from U.S. federal or private sponsors.

Applications for decision modeling grants will be accepted from May 18 through June 30, 2020, and award decisions will be made on a rolling basis. Applicants will be notified immediately via email if their application has been chosen for an award.

For more information about the initiative, including complete application instructions and an FAQ, see the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing website.

Not every organization can pivot (or pivot entirely) to virtual volunteering, but we are interested in exploring what that might look like for those who can.

Join us to think creatively about what that might look like for your organization. We are hosting this call for both the general PHENND network, but also for our Next Steps AmeriCorps program which will be seeking to place members in part-time service (~8-10 hours/week) in the Fall.

Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania Launches a New Community of Practice (CoP) – Boundary Spanning Leadership Skills: Activating an Equitable Civic Mission in Institutions & Communities

CoP 1 June 25—July 30, 2020: 2-3:30 pm (Thursdays, excluding 7/2)

CoP 2 August 5–September 2, 2020: 2-3:30 pm (Wednesdays)

Would you like to learn how to better navigate the complex politics within your institution and in your community as you advocate for democratic engagement? Join a Community of Practice this summer to explore the six boundary spanning leadership skills which will optimize your capacity to leverage your institution’s mission for the public good.

Boundary spanning leadership is the “ability to create direction, alignment and commitment across organizational boundaries in service of a higher vision or goal (Ernst & Chrobot-Mason, 2011).” At the nexus of institutional change for civic action lies the opportunity to utilize boundary leadership to effect change.

Goals for these Communities of Practice are to identify common boundaries, such as equity, which exist in higher education today, explore, and test out boundary spanning practices in leveraging your leadership.

What is a Community of Practice (CoP? It is a learning community, or collegial network, defined as “a group of people who share interest in an area of inquiry and engage in collective learning about that issue as it relates to their work or practice. Through discussions, joint activities, and relationship building, the community of practice develops a shared and individual repertoire of resources, skills, and knowledge to use in their practice.” (MN Campus Compact).

Application & Notification Deadlines: Here are the deadlines for application for the two CoPs offered this summer, as well as the notification timeline.

CoP 1 June 16th by 5 pm; CoP 1 Applicants will be notified by 6/18

CoP 2 July 16 by 5 pm; CoP 2 Applicants will be notified by 7/23

Every year, the Mercer University Center for Community Engagement deploys as many as 350-400 tutors into Bibb County School District and nonprofit partners to support reading and math education in K-5 classrooms. In Summer 2019, Dr. Vicki Luther embarked on a research project with two undergraduate teacher candidates to evaluate Mercer’s work-study and service-learning tutoring program and develop accessible resources to support Mercer students as they provide literacy tutoring to children in grade K-3 in Macon-Bibb County. Hear from Dr. Luther about what her education research looks like when working with undergraduate students, key findings and responses to tutor training needs, and her strategies for transitioning in new research assistants to continue the project.

CED’s mission is to bring capital to communities by building bridges between low- and moderate- income areas and mainstream financial institutions. Through the combination of financial education and peer support, the Financial Advancement Network aims to empower individuals to take charge of their financial lives.

FAN Workshop Information
CED currently offers “one touch” FAN workshops that are organized around a specific topic of interest identified by a community partner. These topics are organized around identified interests that would be of value to the participants in attendance. We draw from a pool of financial education specialists to teach free sessions that include topics ranging from, “Understanding and Improving Your Credit”, “How to Plan for Retirement”, “Understanding Investing”, and “How to Budget”. Workshops are typically 45 – 60 minutes, depending on the number of topics intended to cover.

Scheduling a FAN Workshop
Once a local community group, place of employment or school commits to hosting a FAN Workshop at a particular site, the coordinator will reach out to Urban Affairs Coalition with the topic options that they would like their group to receive. Feel free to mix and match topics from different sections! UAC then reaches out to the Speakers’ Bureau to find a leader for the workshop. UAC will confirm the appropriate speaker for the workshop with the requesting group.

For more information contact Meagan Schaefer, Program Coordinator, at mschaefer@uac.org or 215-851-1847.
