We are an organization that is working to apply a trauma informed lens to all of the work we do and working to dismantle and avoid perpetrating white-supremacist culture.

In Philadelphia every summer, there are over 500 streets designated as “Play Streets”, run by Parks & Recreation. The Play Streets are streets that are closed off to traffic where neighborhood children can receive a free meal and play together. To make those Play Streets more playful, in 2017, Fab Youth Philly created the Play Captain Initiative (www.playcaptains.com), which is a leadership and civic-engagement strategy designed to train and empower teens to make the Play Streets and neighborhoods of Philadelphia more playful. Those teens create and facilitate play activities on several Play Streets throughout Philadelphia as a five-week long summer job.

With support from Drexel University Promise Neighborhood, Fab Youth Philly expanded the Play Captain Initiative into an afterschool job and places the Play Captains at early childhood centers in the Promise Neighborhood of West Philadelphia in partnership with West Philadelphia Action for Early Learning. The Group Leader is responsible for supporting a team of 2-3 Play Captains at afterschool programs on Wednesdays and Thursdays, as well as assisting with weekly Professional Development on Tuesdays. The afterschool programs will be located in 3 centers located in the West Philly Promise Neighborhood (19104).

The Afterschool Play Captain Group Leader supports teams of Play Captains (up to 5 teens per center) at the Early Childhood Centers (up to 2 centers per Group Leader) to effectively do their job. They also help plan and/or participate in weekly professional development activities for the Play Captains.

This is a part-time position of up to 18 hours per week. Interested candidates MUST be available the following days and times: Tues, Wed & Thursdays 2:30-6pm. Fab Youth Philly provides paid time off for PT employees following a 90-day probationary period. There will be a period of paid training for the Group Leaders.
July 2019 … Finding connections among people, birds, trees, gardens, and parks are among the ways 10 Philadelphia-area health leaders say they’re working to make our communities healthier and safer. Their stories are told in Leading Healthy Change In Our Communities 2019, the ninth book in the Healthy NewsWorks series on health leadership.

This book includes interviews and illustrations by more than 120 Philadelphia-area elementary and middle school students who participated in the Healthy NewsWorks student media program during the 2018–19 school year. They were among the 340 students who participated in our Core Reporting Program in Grades 3–8 this year.

Our Hearty Kids program, which works to make heart health information accessible to K–2 students, engaged nearly 390 young reporters. Healthy NewsWorks also completed special classroom visits involving 600 additional students.

The Leaders in Training Sports Mentoring Program will be a program that provides youth with responsible and caring adult mentors. Citing statistics that assert that more than 65% of urban youth are growing up in father absent households with a similar amount dropping out of high school, coupled with the fact that a high percentage of those high school drop-outs are minority youth, LIT Sports believes that involving Urban youth of color to mentor youth of color is an imperative. The Leaders In Training Sports Mentoring Program is part of a comprehensive outreach project designed to improve social, academic and life skill outcomes for youth residing in undeserved Philadelphia communities.

The sessions will include: Project Based Learning, Team, Community and Group mentoring; where the youth will be paired with two to four mentors in groups/teams, once a week for two hours. Mentors will also be asked to dedicate some time future trips, outings. Guest speakers and presenters will be encouraged to volunteer. The Leaders In Training Sports Mentoring Program is currently seeking businesses, institutions and community based organizations to partner with in the hopes of spreading our vision and recruiting mentors. We know that with the help of the community, our program can be a Philadelphia success and we together can reach hundreds of youth and save their futures. Our key components include Mass Communication, Sport Journalism, Sport Administration/Management and Career Workforce.

We are currently formalizing partnership agreements with Lincoln University, Temple’s Cradle to the Grave Program, the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists (some members), and SwiftFit and Level 40 Training, Inc.; two personal training entities geared toward training Philadelphia area high school, collegiate and professional athletes. Our next partnership is with Drexel University’s Lindy Center of Civic Engagement and Temple University (we’re hoping) Department of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality. Our site will be the West Oak Lane Library, located in the Northwest Philadelphia section.

If you are interested in becoming a mentee/mentor or partner with The Leaders In Training Mentoring Program or if you would like more information regarding the program, please contact Eugene Pough, Program Director at 267-377-3471 or at <a
