One of the oldest American foundations, the Russell Sage Foundation was established by Margaret Olivia Sage in 1907 for “the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States.” The foundation dedicates itself exclusively to strengthening the methods, data, and theoretical core of the social sciences as a means of diagnosing social problems and improving social policies.

To advance this mission, the foundation is accepting Letters of Inquiry for its Russell Sage Foundation/Carnegie Corporation Initiative on Immigration and Immigrant Integration. Through the initiative, grants of up to $150,000 over one or two years will be awarded in support of innovative research that strengthens the theory, methods, and empirical knowledge of the effects of race, citizenship, legal status, and the interplay of politics and policy on immigrant outcomes. Examples of the kinds of topics and questions of interest include but are not limited to legal status; naturalization and citizenship; mixed-ancestry, ethnic identity, and integration; race, religion, and inequality; and politics, political culture, and public policy.

The foundation is especially interested in novel uses of under-utilized data and the development of new methods for analyzing these data. Proposals to conduct laboratory or field experiments, in-depth qualitative interviews, and ethnographies are also encouraged.

Letters of Inquiry must be received no later than November 26. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal by March 12, 2020.

Open Technology Fund Invites Applications for Internet Freedom

An initiative of the Open Technology Fund, the Internet Freedom Fund strives to build the capacity of individuals, organizations, and companies working to advance technology-centered efforts designed to strengthen Internet freedom and promote human rights by circumventing repressive censorship and surveillance, improving related digital security capabilities, and contributing to the overall health of the Internet.

To that end, ITF is inviting applications focused on creating new open source circumvention technologies that fill a current need of target users; improve the security, usability, and adaptability of existing open source Internet freedom technologies; and/or provide new or deeper insight into the challenges of front-line communities that ultimately contribute to the improvement of technological solutions. The fund also supports applied research; research that focuses on real-time monitoring and analysis of both technical and political threats to Internet freedom; new content redistribution methods able to reintroduce content behind firewalls; making targeted communities more resilient to digital attacks via customized solutions in-line with OTF criteria; creating new open source circumvention technologies that fill a current need of targeted users; and next-generation tools that move beyond traditional “cat-and-mouse” circumvention techniques.

Organizations may apply for one-year grants ranging between $10,000 and $900,000. OTF’s target support ceiling is $300,000, and most grantees will receive between $50,000 and $200,000.

Preference is given to organizations and individuals without a history of prior support and who have a deep understanding of the surveillance, censorship, and security issues affecting communities from the Global South living in repressive environments. Strong priority will be given to projects with the potential for immediate impact and long-term sustainability and that make intellectual property publicly available via open licensing and open source code.

Concept notes from prospective applicants are due September 1, 2019. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Eligible applicants include individuals of all ages irrespective of nationality, residency, creed, gender, or other factors (except for individuals in countries the United States has imposed trade restrictions or export sanctions on as determined by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control); nonprofit or nongovernmental organizations (including U.S.-based NGOs, PIOs, or foreign NGOs); nonprofit universities or research institutions (in any country); and for-profit organizations or businesses (in any country). Consortia of multiple people or organizations with a single lead are also eligible.

See the Open Technology Fund website for complete program guidelines, eligibility criteria, an FAQ, and application instructions.

Deadline: September 1, 2019 (Concept note)

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Announces $5 Million Funding Opportunity for Expanding Effective School Practices

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is inviting teams of schools, support organizations, and researchers who want to apply the science of learning and human development to improve existing school-based practices that develop self-direction and curiosity to submit applications for a new $5 million whole child grant program.

CZI’s mission in education is aimed at ensuring that every young person enters adulthood with the skills and abilities they need to reach their full potential – and that every teacher is equipped with the research-based tools and practices they need to help students get there. The RFA builds on CZI’s work over the last two years in partnership with the members of the Science of Learning and Development Initiative and the Aspen Institute National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development, as well as CZI’s support for child development research.

Through the program, CZI will award one- to two-year grants to ten school-based teams to help them implement, improve, and measure practices in their schools using the science of human adolescent learning and development.

This opportunity is intended to support specific projects that identify a specific school-based practice; use the science of learning and human development to refine and iterate the practice; collect data to measure how the practice impacts the intended competencies, skills and mindsets; and use the data collected to improve the practice’s design. It is not intended for general operating support, program implementation, or scaling systems.

Grant proposals are due by September 13, 2019.

For information about eligibility criteria and the application process, see the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative website.

Deadline: September 13, 2019

As you may know, institutions of higher education that receive federal funds (i.e. everyone), are required to host some type of educational event in honor of Constitution Day, September 17th.

We have a unique opportunity this year, to have a region-wide common theme for Constitution Day 2019 — the 2020 Census. PHENND is partnering with Philly Counts 2020, the city’s effort to ensure the most complete and accurate count, to ask local colleges and universities to host a Census Champion Training as your Constitution Day event Tuesday, September 17th.

The Census Champion Training is 90 minute event designed to help more people become trusted messengers equipped with the knowledge and tools to accurately and effectively answer questions and raise awareness about the 2020 Census. If your campus is in the City of Philadelphia proper, Philly Counts will send you a trainer on the 17th for your event. If you are in the suburbs, or if you want to host your event at a later time, we still want you to do this, but the city cannot guarantee a trainer. Instead, you can send a staff member to a train-the-trainers event on Thursday, September 12 from 3-5 PM at the Philly Counts office, 2 Penn Center, Suite 950.

This is part of a city-wide effort to train as many people as possible to be Census Champions — trusted community members who know more about the Census than the average person. I encourage you to make this your Constitution Day event and invite all of your campus constituents to it — students, faculty, staff, and community partners — so we can help spread accurate, non-partisan information far and wide. Please register to host a Constitution Day Census Champions Training by August 15th by emailing daniel.warner@phila.gov.

Please see this general description of the Census Champions Training as well as a generic flyer that you can customize with details for your particular event.
El Centro High School is seeking advisors (we call our teachers, advisors) who are eager to work in a progressive, student-centered, project-based high school. Specifically, El Centro is looking for a Math advisor.

El Centro, a Big Picture Philadelphia alternative high school in the Kensington section of North Philadelphia, is seeking passionate, committed, resilient advisors (teachers).
An El Centro advisor (teacher) is a three-pronged position. An advisor is a social and emotional leader, an academic teacher and project developer, and an internship manager. First and foremost, the advisor is the “point person” for their 18 students and those students’ families. The successful advisor creates a safe, trusting, and collaborative learning environment that enables students to learn through school and community experiences and develop as mature, able, knowledgeable, and responsible individuals. An advisor is often responsible for a multi-year educational journey of 18 students, including their successful graduation and transition to a meaningful post-secondary activity.

Key “personalization” (social, emotional, and relational) responsibilities: an advisor (teacher):

Asserts students’ educational and social progress through periodic narrative reports, phone calls to parents, and regular student meetings.

Is accessible to students and parents for education-related purposes outside normal school hours as negotiated with students and their families.

Actively enlists parents and family members in the life and learning of their children.

Creates learning plans with students and their families that encompass the individual student’s personal interests and developmental needs.

Facilitates learning plan meetings with each student and their family, plus their internship mentor when applicable.

Updates and modifies students’ learning plans every term.

Key academic and in-school responsibilities: an advisor (teacher):

Teaches students how to learn, and gather and filter information through personal interaction, print, and web-based sources.

Plans a program of instruction that challenges students and meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of each student.

Guides students into learning experiences and activities that focus on the mastery of the specific content area.

Provides supplemental and educational resources in order to support students’ growth.

Employs a variety of educational techniques in pursuit of educational goals and establishes clear objectives for each student.

Greetings from the PA School Services division of PHEAA!

We are inviting you to attend our annual Financial Aid Workshop conducted by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) and the Pennsylvania Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (PASFAA). This workshop is offered free of charge and will provide you with the latest information on financial aid for postsecondary education. You will be provided with a workshop handbook, handouts and materials.

Due to the increasing cost of higher education, it is more important than ever for counselors to understand the financial aid application process and the availability of financial aid for students. Federal grants and loans, the Pennsylvania State Grant and special programs, campus-based aid, financial literacy and emerging trends in student aid and the workforce will all be addressed during this vital training session. If you are somewhat unfamiliar with financial aid, we suggest you review our 2018 workshop manual prior to attending the workshop.

Workshops are being offered at 40 locations throughout the state during the months of September and October. To view a list of dates and sites, and to register for the workshop of your choice, click here.

On-site check-in the day of the workshop will be conducted from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM, with complimentary refreshments being served. Workshops will begin at 9:00 AM and conclude by 12:15 PM.

Please register at least one week prior to the date of the workshop you wish to attend. Upon registration, you will receive an email confirmation with workshop location, directions and parking information. If you need to cancel or change your registration, please email PASSWorkshops@pheaa.org with your changes.

PHEAA will no longer award Act 48 credits for our Counselor Workshops. We will be providing all attendees with a letter confirming workshop attendance. School staff may use the letter to submit for the three hours if they choose to do so.

We look forward to seeing you at our workshop. Please share this invitation with any colleagues who may be interested but did not receive this email. If you have any questions or need assistance with the registration process, please email us at PASSWorkshops@pheaa.org.
