Open Space Institute Invites Applications for Delaware River Watershed Protection Fund

Launched in 2014, the Delaware River Watershed Protection Fund of the Open Space Institute seeks to ensure abundant, clean water through support for land protection and improved land use planning as part of the broader Delaware River Watershed Initiative, a coordinated effort involving sixty-five organizations working together to protect and restore clean water in the Delaware River watershed. Since the launch of the fund, OSI has approved Capital Grants totaling $8.9 million for forty-seven projects that will preserve more than 22,000 acres of land. These projects are expected to protect 110 miles of forested stream banks, 22,180 acres of headwaters, 7,685 acres of stream buffers, and 3,600 acres of wetlands.

To advance its mission, Open Space is inviting applications for the purchase of land and easements to protect important watershed lands in designated focus areas within the following five watershed clusters: Pocono and Kittatinny; Upper Lehigh; Schuylkill Highlands; Kirkwood-Cohansey; and New Jersey Highlands. One project in each cluster but outside of the focus areas may be eligible for funding if it is of exceptional significance to water quality in the cluster.

Through the Fund, OSI provides three types of grants: Capital Grants for the purchase of land and easements to permanently protect important watershed lands; Transaction Grants to jump start land conservation efforts; and Catalyst Grants to integrate water quality science into open space and other regional plans to accelerate watershed protection by state, county, and municipal governments. (Download this Catalyst Grant program summary for more information and to apply for a Catalyst grant.)

Although there is no minimum or maximum grant size, grant awards typically range between $75,000 and $450,000. OSI will distribute at least $500,000 in each of the eligible clusters.

The fund has a strong preference to capital projects with a 3:1 or greater financial match, and grants and (in some cases) land can serve as the match.

See the Open Space Institute website for complete program guidelines application instructions, a list of previously funded projects, and a map of the geographic focus areas.

Sharing Your Knowledge

The College Board’s Prepárate™ conference assembles education professionals from across the nation to discuss new approaches to support Latino students succeed. Share your experiences, creative solutions, and insights by submitting a session proposal that showcases a program, strategy, or partnership that has a positive impact on students.

Describing Your Session

Prepárate is a venue for all education professionals to share their ideas. We welcome proposals by all professions in education. Given the great range of ideas and audiences at Prepárate, your proposal description should be clear on the topic and the target audience of your session.

Keep in mind that, if accepted, your session information will be published online and in the conference program. Prepárate attendees should be able to read the description and understand the value and learning outcomes. Also, avoid using abbreviations, acronyms, or references that attendees might not be familiar with.

Proposal Requirements and Review

Your session proposal will be reviewed by the Prepárate National Advisory Committee, a cross-professional group of educators from across the country. Your proposed session should:

Present programs, practices, or models that have been effective with, developed by, and/or created for Latino students;

Specify how the work presented has a positive impact on Latino students;

Utilize research or practices relevant to Latino education;

Include a presenter or panel composed of practitioners (such as teachers, counselors, financial aid and enrollment professionals, or administrators);

Address different learning styles by including visuals, handouts, or hands-on activities (use of technology is recommended);

Be scheduled for approximately 60 minutes, including 10 minutes for Q&A; and

Present work that can be replicated in other settings.

The committee will evaluate your proposed session using these criteria:

Relevance: Is the content of the session significant and aligned with conference topic areas? Can it be used to help Latino students succeed?

Innovation: Will the session present creative new solutions, insights, or approaches?

Perspective: Does the proposed session represent multiple perspectives on the topic? Does it address both student and professional experience?

Effectiveness: Will the session present ideas or strategies that are supported by data and have proven successful in the classroom?

Application: Is the session applicable to a broad spectrum of K–12 or higher education communities? Will it suggest methods for implementing ideas or strategies?

Interactivity: Does the proposed session encourage interaction with attendees, i.e., discussions, activities, simulations, gaming, or other ways that engage the audience?

The committee will review all proposals and notify you by November 2019.

Session Subject Areas

We are especially interested in sessions that address these subjects:

Programming and activities that lead Latino students to apply to four or more colleges or universities.

Changing what’s expected of students in order to improve academic achievement.

Overcoming challenges to student success, such as the lack of role models, persistent poverty concerns, community pressures, and a sense that the education system is failing.

Improving multicultural recruitment and retention, both in rigorous courses that lead to college readiness and at higher education institutions.

Developing, implementing, and assessing innovative teaching strategies and successful academic programs.

Helping Latino students explore career aspirations through careful planning and by assessing their abilities, interests, and goals.

Establishing a consistent student support and counseling services model to assist students who have potential as first-generation college students.

Supporting students in transition from high school to college and from community college to a four-year institution.

Demystifying funding and financial aid so that education professionals can better serve their students.

Leading advocacy initiatives, and implementing policy changes.

Creating P-20 partnerships and involving parents, families, and the community in supporting their students all the way through college.

Logistics

Conference Costs

All presenters must register for the conference—presenters who have been notified to present are offered a discount on the conference registration fee. Presenters are responsible for their own travel, hotel arrangements, and expenses. Please submit a session proposal only if you are able to secure funding and are available to present at any time during the conference.

A/V Equipment and File Sharing

Presenters will have access to an LCD or digital projector, screen, speakers, and standard VGA cables for a PC laptop. You must bring your own laptop, as well as your own connectors if you plan to use a Mac computer. If you want to share your presentation with attendees, include a slide with contact information and instructions for requesting a copy. Remove any proprietary information before distributing your presentation.

Other Considerations

Given time and space constraints, as well as our need to develop a balanced program, we may not be able to accept all exceptional proposals. If your proposal is not accepted for this year’s Prepárate, we encourage you to submit a proposal for other College Board conferences.

All session titles and descriptions, along with presenter names, job titles, institutions, and states are part of the official conference program and will be edited for consistency and accuracy.

Mentoring is a highly rewarding experience but at times can be tough. We understand! Our program provides trainings and support for our mentors, both before and after they are matched with a young person. We also provide assistance with getting all applicable clearances necessary for working with youth. We want to make it as fun and easy as possible for our mentors, since we recognize the challenging but also amazing work they do within their mentoring relationships.

For more information on becoming a mentor, please contact Amy Yang, our Mentoring Director at amy@buildingbridgesmentoring.com or 215-834-1319.

The 52,000-square-foot building has presented students and the community with unique opportunities to experience learning in a number of diverse settings – on the basketball court, in the computer lab, and in classrooms.

In order to achieve our mission, North10 focuses on community-building, resource development, and community-informed strategic planning in the areas of education, housing, economic development, and community wellness. North10 has positioned itself as a “Community Quarterback” to improve the quality of life for residents of Hunting Park and East Tioga. We acknowledge that there are stakeholders who have been working towards a goal of neighborhood revitalization for some time and we hope that our work supports theirs.

Starting in the Fall of 2017, after a self-evaluation and a community-informed strategic planning initiative, North10 reimagined the role of the Lenfest Center as a direct service provider to the community. At the core of our work is a commitment to build a diverse cohort of programs that provide year-round learning experiences for youth, their families and community residents. Our K-12 Out of School Time program allows participants to build confidence through academic and enrichment programming, in addition to a robust set of athletics offerings. Finally, with the addition of Adult Programs, the Center will now more effectively function as a vibrant, community hub that facilitates neighborhood engagement, advocacy, culturally relevant education, and improved community health outcomes.

Fairmount Park Conservancy (the Conservancy) is an independent 501(c)(3) organization that champions Philadelphia parks. The Conservancy powers investment and innovative programming to activate, restore, and maintain 10,200 acres of Philadelphia parks, including more than 200 neighborhood parks around the city, as well as historic buildings, monuments, and public art throughout the region. It is the only park conservancy in the country focused on a city-wide park system. The Conservancy seeks a dynamic person to serve as its next Executive Director who can leverage the expertise and energy of its staff and Board of Directors to lead the organization through its next phase of growth.

For more information about the Conservancy, see https://myphillypark.org/what-we-do/.

Fairmount Park Conservancy was initially established by the Fairmount Park Commission to supplement its ability to organize people and resources to benefit the entire park system. In 2015, the Conservancy merged with Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust, expanding its purview to include the historic structures in the park. Today, the Conservancy partners closely with the Philadelphia Department of Parks & Recreation (PPR) to champion the natural and physical assets of the city’s park system. For more information on the Conservancy’s history, merger, and relationship with the City, see https://myphillypark.org/who-we-are/history/.

The next Executive Director will join the Conservancy at an inflection point for the organization, when the value of parks to civic life is widely recognized, and the Conservancy is viewed as central to the advancement of parks across the city. In the last decade, the Conservancy has emerged as the go-to organization for city government, major foundations, and community groups for support, activation, and engagement around Philadelphia’s parks. What began as a fundraising vehicle in support of city government is now a lead player in urban revitalization, sustainability, and civic engagement that inspires people to think about parks and open space in new ways.

The next Executive Director will work closely with the Board and staff to determine: what “growth” means moving forward; the programmatic initiatives on which to focus resources; how to strengthen organizational infrastructure and capacity; how to continue to engage and maximize the Board’s role; and how to raise funds in a continually evolving environment. They will have a sophisticated, nuanced ability to balance between being the executive of an independent nonprofit corporation, and working closely and responsively with the Commissioner of Parks and Recreation, elected officials, local parks advocacy organizations, community groups, and people who are passionate about the city’s parks.
