Cedar Tree Foundation Accepting Proposals for Children’s Environmental Health Initiative

The Cedar Tree Foundation’s Children’s Environmental Health Initiative supports campaigns and programs designed to reduce children’s exposures to toxic chemicals in products and in their environments. The foundation recognizes that toxic chemicals pose a threat to all people, especially children, and that the government does not do an adequate job protecting children from these hazards. Cedar Tree also recognizes that communities of color are most often and most deeply impacted by environmental threats.

In November 2017, the board of Cedar Tree awarded a first round of grants through the initiative, all with a focus on marketplace campaigns that impact children’s health. A second round of grants with the same marketplace focus was awarded in January 2018.

The foundation is now accepting inquiries for a third round of grants, which will be awarded in late fall 2019. The 2019 docket will focus on nonprofit organizations working in communities of color to protect and improve children’s health by addressing exposure to toxic chemicals in products and the environment. The foundation will put special emphasis on grants to organizations whose leadership (staff/board) and programs reflect the communities they serve, with a priority placed on organizations led by people of color.

In 2019, the foundation plans to award five to seven grants ranging between $70,000 and $100,000 a year, for three years. The foundation expects that most of the grants will take the form of project support, but it is open to proposals for general operating support grants if the applicant’s mission relates directly to children’s environmental health. The foundation is open to funding local, grassroots efforts as well as national projects.

Applicants should have strong leadership by people of color (both staff and board), an innovative children’s environmental health campaign or project that addresses exposures to toxic chemicals in products and the environment, and have a budget of between $250,000 and $10 million.

A downloaded Letters of Inquiry form is available online and should be submitted by Friday, July 12. The foundation will review submissions and invite full proposals from selected organizations in early fall, with final grant awards to be announced by the end of 2019.

(Note: If you are seeking a project support grant, Cedar Tree will look at your staff and board for leadership by people of color as a way to be sure that it is raising the voices of communities of color within this funding cycle.)

For more information, application instructions, and an FAQ, see the Cedar Tree Foundation website.

Leeway Foundation Invites Applications for Art and Change Grants

The Philadelphia-based Leeway Foundation believes that art is a vital tool for community building, self-expression, and individual and collective transformation and can bridge difference, center those who have been on the margins, and challenge and connect communities and individuals to live in peaceful coexistence. To that end, the foundation works to promote artistic expression that amplifies the voices of those on the margins, promotes sustainable and healthy communities, and works in the service of movements for economic and social justice.

The foundation currently is inviting applications for its Art and Change Grant program. Through the program, grants of up to $2,500 will be award to women and trans artists in the greater Philadelphia are in support of art-for-social-change projects.

The foundation encourages proposals from artists whose project or opportunity will impact a larger group, audience, or community and who have financial need and limited or no access to other financial resources. Recognizing that most art and social change work happens through relationships with other people and/or organizations, the foundation is particularly interested in projects that are supported by and/or executed in collaboration with a change partner (defined by the foundation as a person, organization, or business that is part of an applicant’s project in some way and/or is a member of the community in which the project takes place), which may include mentors, editors, art spaces, theaters, nonprofit organizations, dance studios, radio stations, and production companies.

Leeway is a trans-affirming organization committed to gender self-determination and uses the term “trans” in its most inclusive sense as encompassing transsexual, transgender, genderqueer, Two-Spirit people, and anyone whose gender identity or gender expression is non-conforming and/or different from their gender assigned at birth.

Applicants must live and work in the greater Philadelphia area, which includes Bucks, Camden, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties.

See the Leeway Foundation website for complete program guidelines and application instructions.

Deadline: August 1, 2019

OPENING SESSION
Panelists: Jamie J. Brunson and Dr. Neil Bardhan

ALLIES & STORIES OF ALLYSHIP
Workshop Leader: Dr. Neil Bardhan
Featured Storyteller: Emily Woods

Emily Woods was assaulted while volunteering internationally. With no clear pathway to justice, alone and afraid in a foreign country – her assault went unreported. How can you help someone that has experienced sexual harassment? Was someone an ally for you after your own experience? This workshop is for allies and those who have received allyship.

WHISTLEBLOWERS Workshop
Leader: Vara Cooper
Featured Storyteller: Colleen Kennedy

The workplace, especially in politics – can seem like a minefield for up and coming female professionals. Colleen Kennedy’s willingness to speak up about sexual harassment in the workplace has landed her under fire. Colleen’s story compels us to ask ourselves: “How do you speak truth to power?” Whistleblowers wield power on behalf of victims. They bring about change and justice. This workshop explores stories of courage.

THE WRITING ZONE Workshop
Leader: Dr. Neil Bardhan

The art of storytelling allows us to capture our experiences, reflect upon them deeply and articulate them to others. For those who want to process experiences of sexual harassment, First Person Arts offers this safe, nurturing “Writing Zone” complete with toolkits. Dr. Neil Bardhan will lead the workshop using discussion and guidance to start your process of discovery. Feedback will be available throughout, and possible next steps will be offered.

AFTER IT HAPPENED: STORIES OF HEALING AND EMPOWERMENT
Workshop Leader: Jamie J. Brunson
Featured Storyteller: Kathleen Lafferty

Experiencing sexual harassment as a “woman in a man’s world” has led Kat Laff to ask herself: “What is the world I want for my son? What kind of man do I want him to be?” The key to empowerment is taking control of the situation and re-molding into something better for the future.

CLOSING SEESSION
Panelist: Dr. Marquita Williams and Dr. Daniel Lee

Take control of your narrative, and you take control of your future.
