Each year, PHENND’s K-16 Partnerships Network hosts a day long convening about university, school, and community partnerships and is a day of planning, reflection, and sharing of information. This year we are partnering with the Office of Environmental Management & Services at the School District of Philadelphia. Under this office, the District developed GreenFutures (http://www.philasd.org/greenfutures), a five-year sustainability plan that was created by District staff and stakeholders with a common goal: to make public schools great and green. This plan is in support of Action Plan v3.0 and it aims to make every school a green school that will better serve our students and communities. GreenFutures is made up of five sections: Education for Sustainability (EfS), Consumption & Waste, Energy & Efficiencies, School Greenscapes and Healthy Schools, Healthy Living.

Education for Sustainability (EfS) is a holistic framework to equip students, schools, administrators, families and the community with the skills, knowledge and habits of mind that will prepare them to create and contribute to a world where economic prosperity, social justice and responsible citizenship may be strengthened while restoring our health and that of the living systems upon which our lives depend. For more information visit the Cloud Institute: https://cloudinstitute.org/cloud-efs-standards/

With the goal of improving patient care in hospitals, clinics, homes, and communities, the Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation supports nurse-led healthcare innovation and research. Drawing on its knowledge of the unique and important role played by nurses, the foundation believes it has valuable insights with respect to relevant modes of research and alternative models that can lead to more equitable patient-centered health care.

To that end, the foundation is accepting applications for its Emergent Innovation Program, which seeks to accelerate the development of bold, nursing-driven interventions targeting the needs of vulnerable populations, including the economically disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ people, and those experiencing homelessness. Through the program, grants of $50,000 will be awarded in support of early stage (untested or minimal-evidence) innovations that address health and healthcare problems in new ways.

Priority will be given to proposals that include one or more of the following: the engagement of patients, families, caregivers, and/or community organizations; inter-professional or multidisciplinary collaboration; institutional and community partnerships; the provision of care in non-hospital settings; and measurable goals and outcomes.

The foundation believes that transformative ideas are as likely to come from small community care settings as they are from major academic research centers and thus supports innovations from a range of institutions, care settings, and practitioners (including postdocs, adjunct faculty, and interdisciplinary faculty).

Eligible candidates include organizations that are tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and that are not classified as a private foundation; international organizations that are equivalent to a 501(c)(3) and that are submitting a project focused on the U.S.; government entities; and faith-based organizations that welcome and serve all members of the community regardless of religious belief.

Letters of Intent are due April 29. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal by July 22, 2019.

See the Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation website for complete program guidelines and application instructions.

The New York City-based William T. Grant Foundation is accepting applications for its Research Grants on Improving the Use of Research Evidence program. Through the program, the foundation seeks high-quality field-initiated studies that identify, build, and test strategies to ensure that research evidence is used in ways that benefit youth.

The foundation welcomes ideas initiated by social scientists across a range of disciplines and diverse methodologies with the potential to advance researchers’ own disciplinary work and scholarship and reveal insights about ways to improve the use of research evidence. The foundation is particularly interested in research on improving the use of research evidence by state and local decision makers, mid-level managers, and intermediaries, and in research dedicated to the following lines of inquiry: identifying or testing strategies to improve the use of existing research; identifying or testing strategies for producing more useful research evidence; and testing the assumption that using high-quality research improves decision making and youth outcomes.

Grants will range between $100,000 and $1,000,000 over one to four years. In addition to financial support, grantees receive significant time and capacity-building resources, as well as opportunities to connect to other scholars, policy makers, and practitioners.

Only tax-exempt organizations are eligible to apply. A copy of the Internal Revenue Service tax-exempt status determination letter is required from each applying organization.

Letters of Inquiry are due May 1, 2019. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.

See the William T. Grant Foundation website for complete program guidelines, application instructions, and descriptions of previously funded projects.

Nurturing Learners, Growing Leaders
New Foundations Charter School
April 14-16, 2019 | Philadelphia, PA

NYLC is excited to announce that New Foundations Charter School in Philadelphia, P.A. will be the host site for the National Service-Learning Conference!

Join us in celebrating 30 years of growing youth as leaders! The National Service-Learning Conference highlights and promotes service-learning as a way of teaching and learning that builds academic and citizenship skills while renewing communities. It is the only major national conference that provides professional development to a diverse audience of K-H educators, administrators, pre-service teacher education staff and faculty, researchers, youth leaders, partners, parents, program coordinators, national service members, community-based organization staff, policy-makers, and corporate and foundation officers.

Service-learning is democracy in action. It’s young people taking notice of inequities where they see them, and taking steps to address them. It’s educators joining in partnership with students, to make education fair and meaningful for all. It’s problems that need solving – environmental justice, economic justice, human rights – solved by those least likely to be asked to solve them, but to whom those solutions matter most.

Join us in action. Create. Demonstrate. Lead. Facilitate. Serve. Organize. Resist. Triumph. Do something. If you dream of a just world like we do, let’s make it happen.

Increase in wage inequality moving too fast for researchers: report

Wages at the top of the income distribution continue to rise much more rapidly than wages for everyone else, according to an analysis of the latest federal data by the Economic Policy Institute, a progressive think tank.

But the data are just as notable for what they don’t say, according to the report by EPI economist Elise Gould. Increases in wages at the top are outpacing economists’ ability to measure them because the federal survey tracking the wage data “top-codes” the highest earnings amounts: For confidentiality reasons, wages are fully recorded only up to a certain threshold. The Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau, which jointly administer the survey, haven’t changed that threshold in 20 years, even as top incomes have skyrocketed. As a result, the survey is capturing less information on top pay than it used to.

“All workers who report weekly earnings above $2,884.61 (annual earnings for full-year workers above $150,000) are recorded as having weekly earnings of exactly $2,884.61, to preserve the anonymity of respondents,” Gould writes. That top-code threshold hasn’t been updated since 1998. As a result, the survey is becoming less useful for tracking top incomes at a time when public concern over inequality is growing. Representatives from the Census Bureau did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“In the overall wage distribution, over the period analyzed in this report, the share of workers reporting weekly earnings at or above the top-code rose from 0.8 percent in 2000 to 4.2 percent in 2018,” according to the report. “In 2018, the share of white workers with weekly earnings hitting the top-code was 5.2 percent. For working men, that share was 5.9 percent in 2018.”

From the Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2019/02/21/income-inequality-is-rising-so-fast-our-data-cant-keep-up/
