Since its debut, PNC Arts Alive has provided $10 million in grant funding to support more than 260 art exhibitions, performances, interactive installations, festivals, and pop-up art experiences benefiting hundreds of thousands of individuals.

New this year is PNC Arts Alive CONNECT , a 2-year funding initiative designed to support smaller, community-based arts and cultural organizations – those with an organizational operating budget of $50,000 to $149,999 – whose arts programming directly benefits the neighborhoods in which they operate.

Both PNC Arts Alive and PNC Arts Alive CONNECT grants cover a wide range of disciplines, audiences and participatory experiences, and celebrate the full range of our Greater Philadelphia’s artistic traditions and individual and shared experiences.

For the first time, organizations based in Kent and New Castle Counties (Delaware) are invited to apply for either the original PNC Arts Alive grant program or the new PNC Arts Alive CONNECT funding initiative. In addition to direct financial support, all PNC Arts Alive and PNC Arts Alive CONNECT grantees will be eligible to receive capacity-building program support from several PNC Arts Alive Service Partner organizations.

The PNC Arts Alive Grant Program will run for a one-year term: September 1, 2019 – August 31, 2020, while PNC Arts Alive CONNECT will run for a two-year term: September 1, 2019 – August 31, 2021.

Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) account for 3% of all postsecondary institutions, yet enroll 9% of all Black college students (Office of Postsecondary Education, 2018). These institutions provide an avenue for educational access and opportunity for many Black students pursuing higher education. Despite the growing number of PBIs and the number of Black students they educate, these institutions still remain one of the least researched Minority Serving Institution (MSI) types in the country. The very limited literature that does exist on PBIs is not extensive, and in many cases, the scholarship simply mentions PBIs amidst a discussion on other more researched MSIs. Much of the literature does not delve into how these institutions are supporting their students, how they are continuing to strive, despite limited resources, and the value these institutions add to the overall higher education landscape. As the number of African Americans enrolling in colleges and universities steadily increases and as institutions shift towards creating more inclusive environments for all students, there is a need for further exploration of how PBIs are evolving to best accommodate the marginalized groups they serve, particularly low-income Black students. This research brief will examine five PBIs that have received federal funding to enhance institutional capacity to support more low-income Black students, and highlight how these institutions are providing educational opportunity to Black students.

Last month, the American Council on Education (ACE) released the much-anticipated report “Race & Ethnicity in Higher Education.” The organization hosted a release convening to highlight the report’s key findings. The convening also included two panel sessions, and you can view a recording of the event here.

Read on for a summary of the findings and the critical discussion points made by the panelists.

6 Key Findings

To no one’s surprise, the U.S. population has become more educated and more racially and ethnically diverse over the last 20 years. The report found that 45 percent of the total population ages 25 and older had obtained at least an associate degree – that’s a 13 percentage-point increase since 1997. This is attributed primarily to the growing Hispanic population that is seeking higher education more now than it was 20 years ago.

Read more on the NCAN blog to learn the other 5 key findings.
This report examines over 200 indicators, looking at who gains access to a host of educational environments and experiences, and how these trajectories differ, by race and ethnicity.
