Full Time Job Announcement: Early Childhood Educator, GrandFamily Literacy Program, Grandfamily Resource Center at SOWN

The GrandFamily Resource Center, a program of SOWN, is excited to announce a new family literacy initiative that will be funded through a generous grant from the William Penn Foundation. The GrandFamily Literacy Program is an innovative two-generational model that will support the development of caring, learning home environments that promote literacy, school readiness, and academic success for young children ages 3 to 8 years being raised by their grandparents. Over 17,000 grandparents in Philadelphia are responsible for raising their grandchildren, and this number is rising. Grandparents take on full-time child-rearing when the parents are unable to do so due to many different reasons, including substance abuse, incarceration, death, or mental illness. With the rise in opioid use, grandparents are stepping up more than ever to care for their grandchildren. Nearly all of the children have experienced trauma, and many struggle with socio-emotional, behavioral and learning issues. The GrandFamily Literacy Program’s two-generational approach will support the literacy needs of these families – at home, at school and in the community – so that the children are better poised for academic success.

Volunteer as a Financial Coach with Clarifi Boot Camp

We are excited to announce our upcoming “Keys to Homeownership” Boot Camp in the Winter of 2019. After attending workshops and working with Clarifi’s certified counselors, clients work with volunteer financial coaches over a six-month period. Coaches engage and motivate clients and act as a sounding board for support. Best yet, no financial experience is necessary!

Volunteer financial coaches will receive comprehensive training beforehand to learn about the tools and skills needed to guide a client in developing and following an action plan to reach their goals and achieve financial stability. Volunteers should have a desire to learn coaching concepts and an ability to remain positive and culturally sensitive.

Volunteer Training – Clarifi staff trains volunteers to perform as coaches. Training will take place in Philadelphia, PA. (Next training is January 2019*)

Client Graduation Ceremony – Clients who successfully complete the six month program are honored to celebrate their journey with family, friends, and their coaches.

How many times have you gone back to the drawing board on this one, trying to create program evaluations that don’t eat up resources, but accurately measure.

“Learn to Love Program Evaluation” enables you to understand, verify or increase the impact of your services, demonstrating outcomes. The process forces us to move beyond our instincts, or anecdotal information, or educated guesses to know what clients really need, whether we are providing that and whether our resources are being directed effectively. With evaluation and the accurate data it provides, we can improve our delivery systems and become more efficient, as we identify strengths and weaknesses.

This class provides an overview of program evaluation tools, including a step-by-step model, as you engage in focused dialogue about concrete ways to assess your programs. You will leave with proven tools, approaches, techniques, and ideas that are customizable to the evaluation of a wide range of programs within your organization.

When: January 25, 2019, 9 am to 4 pm

Philanthropy group encourages greater nonprofit diversity

Nonprofits are often cash strapped, which means they need to get a lot of good out of a small number of staff members. That can require forging better relationships with the people they serve can gain more insight into how best help them and developing creative ways to troubleshoot problems. Plenty of research shows the best way to do that is by cultivating a more diverse workforce, which combats (often white, affluent) blind spots, and brings new perspectives to the table.

But it turns out that while plenty of midsize and large nonprofits know that, many still aren’t doing it. Seventy percent of organizational leaders consider staff diversity an extremely important goal, but only 36% think they’ve actually achieved it, according to a new report by the Center for Effective Philanthropy.

The report, entitled Nonprofit Diversity Efforts: Current Practices and the Role of Foundations, is comprised of survey responses from 205 nonprofit leaders at groups with annual expenses between $100,000 and $100 million. (It also shares some findings about the link between diversity and workforce achievement.) The respondents come from different sector areas including education, social justice, community and economic development, human services, and health.

Report: http://research.cep.org/nonprofit-diversity-efforts

“Nonprofit leaders recognize that they have room for improvement in terms of how diverse they believe their staffs and boards should be in order to achieve their organization’s goals versus how diverse they currently are–and they also recognize they have steps to take to better reflect the populations they are serving, and that it’s important for them to do so,” says CEP’s vice president of research and report author Ellie Buteau in an email to Fast Company.

Because the report is built off the beliefs of leaders as opposed to raw hiring data, there may be some differences between the perceptions of those in charge. In general, though, over 20% of leaders consider their staff to be “not at all” or “not very” racially or ethnically diverse. Those numbers increase to around 40% when it comes to gender identity, 25% for sexual orientation, and 60% for people with disabilities. All those numbers jump between 20% and 40% more when you include workforces that seem “somewhat diverse.” Being “somewhat diverse”–which , of course, may be matter of interpretation–isn’t they same things as ensuring that minorities with divergent opinions are heard and empowered.

Part of the problem may be that nonprofits aren’t thinking enough about how to actually up their representation levels. “In our survey, we also asked nonprofit leaders about how diversity factored into their hiring practices,” Buteau says. “Just over half of nonprofit CEOs said their organization requests that search firms provide a diverse candidate pool. Only seven percent say they redact information such as names, addresses, or educational backgrounds from resumes before they are reviewed.”

The respondents were divided as to whether foundations should take a broader role in encouraging diversity among their grantees, but so far many obviously aren’t. Nonprofit leaders say about 40% of institutional funders haven’t discussed the importance of workforce diversity with them. Among those that collect demographic information on their grantees, only about 20% go into detail about why they are doing so.

“This tells us that there is no one solution to how foundations can support nonprofits in their diversity efforts,” says Buteau. Rather than wait, some nonprofits are tacking the issue directly. In April, the nonprofit talent development group ProInspire launched Equity in the Center, an initiative that has developed a manual (it’s called “Awake to Woke to Work”) with steps for groups at any stage of development move toward more diverse hiring and workplace equity.

Overview
CUMU is partnering with the Community Change Influence Unit of the Annie E. Casey Foundation to commission a research project focused on programs being undertaken by members of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities that serve “opportunity youth”—young people between the ages of 16 and 24 who are neither in school nor working. These programs can include both those that are led directly by university staff, as well as local collaborative partnerships of which the university is a member.
About CUMU
The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) is the longest-running and largest organization committed to serving and connecting the world’s urban and metropolitan universities and their partners. CUMU was formed in 1989 by leaders of metropolitan and urban institutions who realized their unique challenges and opportunities as they looked to the future of higher education. Today, CUMU is dedicated to its member institutions and to the creation and dissemination of knowledge on the issues that face our urban and metropolitan campuses and the communities we serve.

Who Can Apply?
All current CUMU members are invited to apply. Within a CUMU member institution, applicants could consist of individual researchers, research teams, centers, or institutes. Applicants must demonstrate experience and capacity to conduct research, evaluate programs, and analyze data results. Applicants can create teams that include non institution personnel, but at least one member of an applicant team must be an employee of a CUMU member institution during the period of performance. Volunteers will be provided heavy-duty work gloves and plenty of hot chocolate to warm their innards while providing plenty of work to do to warm their outards.

Where: Cooper River Park. Plenty of parking for school bus and private vehicles in gravel parking lot on South Park Drive at base of Bradford Ave.

Why: Either pick up the trash that potentially harms wildlife and just looks bad, Or, bring a pair of hand pruners and we will cut-back the invasive English ivy that is growing up on and killing many of the trees in the park. Invasive plants negatively affect our forests, parks and open space. They do not provide the food source and habitat the area’s wildlife depend on and reduce plant diversity by crowding-out native species.
