The NEA Foundation is accepting applications for its 2020 Global Learning Fellowship program.

By participating in the Global Learning Fellowship program, educators have an opportunity to lead the profession by acquiring the necessary skills to integrate global competence into their daily classroom instruction, advance pedagogy in their school/district, prepare students to thrive in the flattened global age, and contribute to the closing of the global achievement gap.

Through online courses and webinars, workshops and a nine-day field study, the program offers educators twelve months of professional development opportunities designed to help them acquire global competence skills and build global lesson plans that can be shared with educators around the world. Over the course of the year, fellows are supported by NEA Foundation staff, partners, and other field experts.

The field study is designed to focus on the themes of global competence, education (both practice and issues of international, national, and state policy), and economics. The trip will provide fellows with structured opportunities to observe high-quality instruction and to interact with global educators, students, administrators, and policy makers. Fellows also will have opportunities to investigate the historical and cultural significance of the destination country and engage in a service-learning project with a local community organization. Previous field study destinations have included China, Brazil, and Peru.

For complete program guidelines, information about participants in the 2020 course, and application instructions, see the NEA Foundation website.

The Service Year + Opportunity Youth Summit is a full-day exploration of the ways that service year programs of all types improve outcomes for opportunity youth.

Opportunity youth, sometimes referred to as disconnected youth, are American youth aged 16-24 who are neither in school nor employed. Service years — full-time paid service experiences that develop real-world skills through hands-on service — are a powerful but little-understood strategy to change the life trajectory of opportunity youth.

About one third of full-time service year opportunities today are targeted at opportunity youth through various programs. Service Year Alliance and other advocates are looking to expand service year opportunities for young adults of all backgrounds through a variety of growth and policy strategies. In addition, we will work to identify effective strategies to remove barriers to education and employment for opportunity youth through service and enable them to pursue their dreams.
With inspiration from experts and those who have a lived experience as opportunity youth, the Service Year + Opportunity Youth Summit will provide a deep and rich exploration of the ways that service year programs of all types could improve outcomes for opportunity youth. We hope that you can join us!

The Leaders In Training Sports Mentoring Program is part of a comprehensive outreach project designed to improve social, academic and life skill outcomes for youth residing in undeserved east Germantown (Philadelphia) communities and youth from Mastery Charter Pickett North.

Starting in December 2018, our Program Director and Coordinator, Eugene Pough and Vonkurt Redley will begin working with youth grades 7th -12th, on a weekly basis. The sessions will include: Team, Community and Group mentoring; where the youth will be paired with one to four mentors in groups. Have you ever helped a family member or friend to get health care services?
Are there things harming your community’s health that you feel passionate about changing?
…If the answer is yes, this may be the job for you!

Location: Penn Center for Community Health Workers, Penn Medicine

Work hours: 8:30am-5pm Monday through Friday. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

General Job Statement:

Every day, we care for low-income patients in our hospitals and primary care clinics. We try our best to keep them feeling well so that can live their lives to the fullest. But life can be tough and lots of things can keep people from staying healthy and from getting better when they are sick. Patients have worries such as: “How will I get to the pharmacy to get my prescriptions filled?”, “Who will watch my children while I go to the doctor?” and “Will I have food, transportation and housing?”

We believe that community-health workers (CHWs) have the skills and experience to understand what low-income patients are going through and help them get through difficult times. CHWs are people who come from the communities they serve. In the IMPaCT program, CHWs act as caring neighbors to help patients address the social and medical problems that lead to poor health. The goal is to help patients out with the tasks of getting medical care, working on health goals (arranging care, filling medication prescriptions, planning healthy meals or finding time to exercise), and to help them deal with the social issues that keep them from staying healthy.
