Eastern Region Campus Compact Bi-Annual Confernece
Education for Democracy: Innovating in Complex Times
March 25-27, 2019
Providence, RI

Proposals due: November 1, 2018

About the Conference
The ERCC conference aims to showcase practices advancing the field of community and civic engagement. Through a mix of session topics and formats, networking opportunities, and a variety of speakers, ERCC conference participants will explore key topics related to community-engaged scholarship, learning that promotes civic & democratic engagement, and programs and partnerships that enhance both community & campus.

The 2019 conference theme is Education for Democracy: Innovating in Complex Times. Higher Education is influenced by significant social, economic, and political factors within and beyond academe, and campuses are at the nexus of multiple social movements. The field of civic and community engagement is challenged to respond, contribute, and lead change-making efforts on and off campus that improve our communities and democracy. The rate of change is quickening, and we must ensure that our scholarship and practice is evolving to ensure student, institutional, and community impact. Innovation requires us to think and act differently. We are compelled to develop new educational opportunities and processes that provide solutions to complex problems and advance our common purposes of educating students for civic and social responsibility and improving communities. The conference will explore these framing questions:

– What are the key issues that are changing the field of higher education civic and community engagement? How is it impacting our scholarship and practice?
– How can we strengthen our network of scholars, practitioners, and partners so our collective work can be enhanced and amplified?
– What innovative ideas and promising practices are advancing higher education’s community and civic engagement practices?
– How can we create a more equitable field by recognizing diverse sources of knowledge, epistemologies, as well as a set of scholars and practitioners?

Presentation Information

Through a lens of the conference theme and framing questions, proposals may cover a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to:

– Civic and democratic learning pedagogies and initiatives (e.g. dialogic practice, political learning, service-learning, etc.)
– Evidence based work including community engaged scholarship and/or research, assessment, and evaluation of service-learning and civic engagement
– Place-based initiatives such as anchor institution activities, community partnerships, and collective impact.
– Community engagement programs and practices, especially those positively impacting the priorities of student learning and success and/or equity, diversity, and inclusion.
– The role technology plays in communication, democratic expression, organizing, community development, and program management

Russell Sage Foundation Seeks Letters of Inquiry for Social Inequality Research

One of the oldest American foundations, the Russell Sage Foundation was established by Mrs. Margaret Olivia Sage in 1907 for “the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States.” In pursuit of this mission, the foundation now dedicates itself to strengthening the methods, data, knowledge, and theoretical core of the social sciences as a means of diagnosing social problems and improving social policies.

The foundation’s program on Social Inequality supports research on the social, economic, political, and labor market consequences of rising economic inequalities in the United States. The program seeks Letters of Inquiry for investigator-initiated research projects that will broaden current understanding of the causes and consequences of rising economic inequality. Priority will be given to projects that use innovative data or methodologies to address important questions about inequality.

Examples of the kinds of topics that are of interest include but are not limited to economic well-being, equality of opportunity, and intergenerational mobility; the political process and resulting policies; psychological and/or cultural change; education; labor markets; child development and child outcomes; neighborhoods and communities; families, family structure, and family formation; and other forms of inequality.

Two-year grants of up to $150,000 will be awarded to qualified organizations.

To be eligible, organizations must be considered a monprofit under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Review Code.

The foundation encourages methodological variety, but all proposals should have well-developed conceptual frameworks and research designs. Analytical models should be specified and research questions and hypotheses should be clearly stated. Awards are available for research assistance, data acquisition, data analysis, and investigator time for conducting research and writing up results.

Letters of Inquiry must be received no later than November 30. Upon review, select applicants will be invited to submit a complete proposal by March 4, 2019.

For complete program guidelines, application instructions, information about previous grant recipients, and an FAQ, see the Russell Sage Foundation website.

Deadline: November 30, 2018 (Letters of Inquiry)

Course Hero, Woodrow Wilson Foundation Announce New Round of Higher Ed Teaching Awards

Course Hero and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation have issued a call for nominations for their awards for excellence in college-level teaching and an expansion of the fellowship program.

Created by Course Hero and administered by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the Course Hero–Woodrow Wilson Fellowships were conceived as “genius grants” for tenure-track faculty who balance scholarly excellence and outstanding undergraduate teaching practices.

The newly expanded program will provide eight fellowships in the humanities/social sciences, life sciences, math/physical sciences, and business. Four fellowships will again be awarded to scholars working toward tenure, with each of these tenure-track fellows receiving $30,000, including $20,000 to engage a research or teaching assistant and $10,000 toward their own research and travel. In addition, four fellowships offering $20,000 each will be awarded to instructors who are not in a tenure-track position.

Non–tenure-track faculty make up one-half to two-thirds of today’s faculty workforce in higher education, and they disproportionately teach entry-level undergraduate courses. Many are deeply committed to teaching but have less access to resources and less time to prepare classes. The Course Hero–WW program expansion is intended to acknowledge such instructors’ contributions to teaching excellence.

Exceptional candidates for the Course Hero–WW Fellowships should teach in ways that build student confidence and mastery of a subject; encourage critical thinking; explore foundational concepts through the lens of broader themes and global events; promote the power of learning communities beyond the classroom; leverage technology to complement the classroom experience; consider and serve different ways of learning; prepare students for lifelong learning; and can serve as replicable teaching models for other educators.

For the tenure-track award, eligible candidates must be a junior faculty member in one of the program’s fields of focus who has successfully completed his/her institutional review at the midpoint of his/her progress toward tenure. They also must be able to provide evidence of outstanding progress in developing a research dossier for tenure and of excellence in undergraduate teaching. Non–tenure-track candidates, working in the same fields, must be teaching at least two courses per term/semester and have three to seven years’ experience in their positions.

All fellows will be invited to engage and collaborate with Course Hero’s online learning platform and its growing community of students and educators.

Applications for the 2019 Course Hero–WW Fellowship competition are due November 9, 2018, with the selection of fellows expected to take place in April 2019.

For more information, see the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation website.

Deadline: November 9, 2018

The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to promote and support high-quality educational programs that help children and youth to understand and appreciate our world through learning experiences that engage them in active hands-on projects to improve the environment in their schools and communities.

Grants are intended to serve as a means of bringing environment-based education to schools and inspire youth and communities to participate in community service through environmental stewardship activities. On occasion, the foundation will fund unique and innovative projects that do not precisely match the grant guidelines but otherwise promote its mission to support hands-on environmental activities.

The foundation makes grants to U.S.-based schools and nonprofit environmental and educational organizations with an annual operating budget of less than $3 million.

Preference is given to requests seeking funding of $500 or less and to applicants who have secured at least 50 percent matching or in-kind funding for their projects. (Projects with matching funds or in-kind support are given priority, as external funding is a good indicator of the potential for long-term sustainability of the activity.) The foundation will on occasion consider grants of up to $2,500.

See the Captain Planet Foundation website for complete program guidelines and an application form.
