Urban and metropolitan universities attract individuals from a rich diversity of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences with the promise of helping them achieve their academic and professional goals. In order to ensure that all our students can fully participate in and benefit from the post-secondary experience, institutions are seeking ways to provide supports that help them navigate these complex environments. Peer mentoring is one effective strategy for this. The authors in this issue, drawing upon examples from universities across the country that vary in scale and scope, highlight innovative peer mentoring programs designed for students who have served in the military, are first-generation in their family to attend college, have a disability, are immigrants, and belong to a racial or ethnic minority group. Collectively, they show how peer mentoring enriches learning experiences for students.

This document is intended to guide potential partners through the processes associated with becoming an approved School Partner, and also to help these organizations find the best match for their strengths and the needs of schools and students.

What are School Partners?
The School District of Philadelphia (District) defines School Partners as organizations that:
● Exist as formal entities, which include nonprofit organizations, private corporations, and government agencies.
● Are capable of providing high-quality and ready-to-implement programs or services within District school communities.
● Can offer their programs or services at no cost to the District or its schools.

By contrast, School Partners DO NOT include:
● Individual volunteers. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities, please visit the United Way’s volunteer portal at http://volunteer.unitedforimpact.org/.
● Organizations seeking funding from the District or wishing to charge schools or students for their programs or services.
● Researchers not associated with School Partner programs or services. If you are interested in research opportunities, please visit the Office of Research and Evaluation’s site at https://www.philasd.org/research/.

We are smarter together, stronger together, and more successful together. These are our foundational principles.
We at the Office of Strategic Partnerships (OSP) see Philadelphia as being home to a rich tapestry of partner organizations and programs that, in collaboration with schools, help to create vibrant learning environments for our students. We believe that partnerships can be an important lever in helping schools reach their goals and that strong partnerships grow out of a spirit of collaboration and understanding among all stakeholders. These beliefs guide our work with partners, schools, and other School District of Philadelphia (District) offices.

Now in our fifth year, we continue to leverage the support of key partners and listen as schools share their fundamental needs. This allows our office to more effectively connect necessary programs and resources with our
school communities. Of course, the District is the institution with the primary responsibility to educate students, but in a world of rapid change and increasing challenges, it only makes sense to engage leaders from business, civic organizations, philanthropy, and communities in ways that create as many options and opportunities as possible for our young people.

The MDO provides support, assistance, and coordination to build sustainable infrastructure within and across departments, ensuring the efficient delivery of quality services to the public.

The Citywide Out-of-School Time (OST) Initiative is developing a shared, coordinated and inclusive OST system that reaches ambitious goals on behalf of Philadelphia’s young people. This is a cross-sector, holistic initiative that is working to align various OST efforts from city departments as well as other existing and potential OST stakeholders. The OST Initiative Coordinator is a new position that will be focused on helping to implement Philadelphia’s Citywide OST Initiative. While this new position will report directly to the Citywide OST Initiative Director, s/he will work in
close collaboration with the Department of Human Services’ OST team as well as the other members of the OST Steering Committee.

This is a new phase of work that builds upon current and past investments in Philadelphia’s OST community. This effort is also rooted in the national afterschool systems building work of the Wallace Foundation. The Initiative’s nine-year plan looks to harness the power of all OST stakeholders to realize the full potential of Philadelphia’s OST. The guiding documents for this Initiative can be found here.
