RWJF Issues RFP for Projects That Empower Boys and Young Men of Color

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has issued a Request for Proposals for its 2017 Forward Promise: Empowerment Projects program, which aims to promote opportunities for boys and young men of color (BYMOC) to heal, grow, and thrive in the face of chronic stress and trauma.

Empowerment Projects seek to strengthen organizations that provide culturally relevant healing responses to trauma and can partner with youth-serving systems to advance new practices designed to prevent further traumatization. In doing so, it is important that the organizations use stories of BYMOC’s resilience and healing to promote and inform their work, and that boys and young men of color are themselves the ones telling those stories.

Awards will be made to U.S.-based organizations, not individuals. Preference will be given to applicants that are either public entities or nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Programs that serve both young men and women will be considered but must indicate an explicit emphasis on improving outcomes for BYMOC. Preference will be given to organizations whose programs are made up of at least fifty percent male participants.

Up to nine awards will be made through the initiative. To ensure the initiative is accessible to a variety of organizations, awards will be made in two sizes: up to six grants of up to $450,000 per grantee, and up to three grants of up to $150,000 per grantee. Award size consideration will be determined by the applicant’s administrative and financial capacity. The grant term will be two years.

The foundation will host an optional applicant webinar on April 20, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. ET. Registration for the registration is required.

Brief proposals must be received no later than May 2, 2017. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal by June 22, 2017.

See the RWJF website for complete program guidelines and application instructions.

DEADLINE: MAY 2, 2017 (BRIEF PROPOSALS)

The Children’s Community School is seeking a Development Manager to coordinate and lead fundraising efforts in the 2017-18 school year in collaboration with the school administration.

CCS is a private, non-profit preschool in West Philadelphia, serving nearly a hundred children and families. Our mission is to create a learning community that honors and empowers children to engage their whole selves in education. We work to create rich, inclusive communities in our classrooms, our school, and our neighborhood, nurturing children, supporting families, empowering staff, and growing local connections. Through curriculum focusing on mindfulness, inquiry, and social justice, and help children become active members of their communities. More information about our school at http://childrenscommunityschool.org.

The Development Manager will lead efforts to raise $30,000 over the course of the school year to support financial aid and staff retention goals. Fundraising efforts will likely focus on cultivating individual donors and donations from small local foundations, but could also include searching for and writing grants or planning fundraising events. We are not necessarily looking for someone with rich fundraising knowledge and experience (though that would be nice), so much as someone able and excited to learn and to develop their abilities along with our program over time. If all goes well in the first year, we intend to significantly increase the Development Manager’s salary, hours, and fundraising goals in subsequent years.

REQUIRED CRITERIA–We will only consider candidates who meet all of the following criteria.
• Ability to work collaboratively with school administrators and teachers
• Ability to plan, organize, manage, and communicate about long-term projects

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE–The ideal candidate will possess many of the following qualities.
• Experience raising money, especially for nonprofits
• Experience in early childhood education and/or progressive education
• Experience in communications or public relationships
• Experience in community organizing
• Experience researching and writing grants
• Experience planning large events (e.g., fundraisers, weddings, etc.)
• Ability to interpret, track, and administer budgets, especially to propose or report on projects
• Strong research skills, especially skills in searching for and evaluating information online
• Strong existing relationships with CCS families, CCS alumni families, local businesses, and/or our local community
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice
• Demonstrated growth mindset and eagerness to learn and develop new knowledge and skills
• Comfort using Google Docs, or other online tools for collaborative work
• Potential to grow the position over several years

Salary: $10,000/year
Hours: ~10/hr per week, mostly flexible
Contract: August 16, 2017-August 15, 2018

TO APPLY, please email your résumé and cover letter to jarrod@childrenscommunityschool.org. Your cover letter should be between half a page and a page, single spaced, and include
• what experience you have that prepares you for this position
• something specific from this ad or our website that makes you think you would be a good fit for our school.

We look forward to hearing from you!

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY
The Philadelphia School Partnership (PSP) works to give every child in America’s fifth largest city the opportunity to attend a great school. We invest philanthropic funds in high-impact schools so they can serve more low-income students—whether they be in the traditional public, public charter or private sectors. Our aim is to catalyze the creation or transformation of enough schools to ensure better options for 50,000 students, or nearly one in four of all Philadelphia schoolchildren. Since 2011 PSP has invested in more than 50 schools, creating new educational opportunity for 21,000 students. PSP also works to create the conditions that enable great schools to grow and thrive, including a strong pipeline of qualified teachers and principals, resources and initiatives to empower parents and families, and policies that enable entrepreneurial school leadership and create opportunity for high-performing schools to grow. Additionally, PSP invests to catalyze collaboration, facilitating the sharing of best practices among schools and support organizations. Nonpartisan and data-driven, we work with government officials, business leaders, education leaders and practitioners, and community groups to pursue the promise of a great school for every child.

PSP believes that in a city as large as Philadelphia, there is not one best or right kind of school. Two hundred forty thousand children need a wide variety of schools from which to choose. The city has numerous examples of high-performing schools, and they span all three primary sectors: charter schools, district schools and private/Catholic schools. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of quality options in all three sectors. More than 35,000 students sit on waiting lists for the city’s best schools—which include private, charter, district magnet, and district neighborhood schools. Our work centers on leveraging philanthropic capital to attract entrepreneurial leadership and overcome inertia and financial and political barriers so that Philadelphia can have more great schools.

Like all cities, Philadelphia has finite resources for K-12 education. PSP believes the route to effectively educating all of the city’s children lies in fomenting and sustaining an educational ecosystem that steers resources toward effective schools, regardless of sector or type of school, so they can grow; increases equity of access to all school choices for families; and utilizes multiple measures of school performance to hold schools accountable for outcomes, thus ensuring support and—if necessary—intervention for struggling schools.

IN RECENT YEARS, AMERICA’S CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM HAS BECOME the subject of an increasingly urgent debate. Critics have assailed the rise of mass incarceration, emphasizing its disproportionate impact on people of color. As James Forman, Jr., points out, however, the war on crime that began in the 1970s was supported by many African American leaders in the nation’s urban centers. In his new book, Locking Up Our Own, he seeks to understand why.

JAMES FORMAN, JR. is a Professor of Law at Yale Law School. He is a graduate of Atlanta’s Roosevelt High School, Brown University, and Yale Law School, and was a law clerk for Judge William Norris of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor of the United States Supreme Court.
