Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program Accepting Applications

The Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program is inviting applications for its 2017-18 fellowships. The year-long program is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the experience and skills needed to make a positive contribution to the development and implementation of health policies affecting older Americans.

To that end, the program offers fellows the opportunity to participate in a residential track or a non-residential track. The residential track allows fellows to participate in the policymaking process on either the federal or state level as legislative assistants in Congress, professional staff members in executive branch agencies, or policy organizations. The non-residential track allows fellows to remain at their home institution but to work on a policy project that involves brief placement(s) during the year at relevant sites. Core program components focused on career development and professional enrichment are provided for fellows in both tracks.

Fellows also have the opportunity to apply for second-year funding to pursue a component(s) of their fellowship experience/project at their placement site, at the state/local levels, or with a nongovernmental organization.

Stipends for residential fellows vary and are commensurate with each individual’s current base salary (up to $100,000 annually). In addition to a stipend, financial support will be provided for relocation (up to $4,500), and health insurance (up to $400/month), if not covered by the institution.

Non-residential fellows may receive up to $10,000 to cover approved project related expenses and travel costs. It is expected that applicants will secure institutional in-kind support that will allow them to commit 20 percent of their time to their project. Non-residential applicants who are early in their career and cannot secure full institutional in-kind support for their fellowship participation may apply for partial salary support from the Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program, up to a maximum of $15,000.

Travel costs to fellowship-related meetings for all fellows will be reimbursed and are in addition to fellows’ stipends and non-residential fellows’ budgets.

Applicants at all career stages are eligible to apply, and candidates from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. The program has a broad interdisciplinary focus and past fellows have included physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, dieticians, healthcare administrators, epidemiologists, economists, and lawyers from academic and practice settings.

Applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. or one of its territories who have career plans that anticipate continued work in the U.S. after the fellowship period has ended.

See the Health and Aging Policy website for complete fellowship guidelines and application instructions.

Literacy is the doorway to learning. It empowers young learners to navigate a complex world, inspires them to pursue their passions, and prepares students for higher-level academics. Yet, two out of three Philadelphia school children cannot read at grade level by the time they enter fourth grade. The School District of Philadelphia, working with a broad range of community partners through the Read by 4th Campaign and the Mayor’s Office, aims to double the number of fourth graders reading at grade level by 2020. Ample research suggests that when children write, their reading also improves.

This April, we’ll have the opportunity to see how two Philadelphia schools are using an evidence-based writing program to enhance literacy for all of their kindergarten and first-grade students, including young English learners. The School District of Philadelphia’s Comprehensive Literacy Framework (Pre-K to 5) defines specific grade level goals for our youngest learners in both writing and reading and the panelists will provide a look at how the program works as part of this Framework. They will facilitate a discussion about how parents, teachers, and community members can work together to implement strong literacy programs for our youngest learners. What does it take to translate policy goals into a school context for student success? How are reading and writing related? How can we support writing for all learners?

The program also comes with a $5,000 stipend.

Research Experience for Teachers (RET)
A program for Research Experience for Teachers from schools in the Delaware Valley was started in 1999. Teachers spend 6 weeks working on an individual research project under the supervision of a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of an LRSM -associated faculty member. At the end of the program the teacher must make an oral presentation of his/her findings and also submit a research paper before leaving the program.

Research Experience for Teachers 2017

With support from the National Science Foundation, this program seeks up to five high school science teachers from the Delaware Valley region. The teachers will undertake a summer research program for six weeks from June 19 through July 28, 2017 and each will be assigned to a senior investigator in five of our IRG or Seed programs within the PENN MRSEC. It is proposed that each teacher learn a specific instrumental technique that is seminal to the research interests of the group, e.g. x-ray diffraction or scanning electron microscopy, which he/she will use to conduct a short research assignment pertinent to the goals of the group.

During the first week the teachers will be given instruction on laboratory safety and a mini course on materials science that will cover most of the major classes of materials: metals, polymers, ceramics, semiconductors, and biomaterials plus an overview of the major characterization techniques used in the MRSEC. This will include tours and demonstrations of the MRSEC’s Shared Experimental Facilities. Instruction will also be given on research methodology.

Each teacher will be expected to present a short oral report on his/her research activity during the last week of the program and also to submit a short, written report. Teachers will be expected to return to the LRSM at the start of the following summer to informally discuss their experiences throughout the year with the incoming class of teachers.

Application deadline April 15

Have you ever looked at one of those “50 Tools to Do Whatever” posts and wished someone would just show you which one to use to do what you want? It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the choices online. And it’s really frustrating to get started only to realize the tool doesn’t work the way you expected.

But to start using infographics in your materials, first you need to create some! And it’s harder than it looks to combine a bunch of stats and images to tell a clear, compelling story.

So in this month’s class, we’ll show you how to create a data-driven image that works. We’ll also explore the features of a few different online tools to help you get the job done.
