Thursday, May 5, 1:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M. EDT (10:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. PDT)

This is Part 2 of a webinar series on how programs can support social and emotional development. You can read more about and watch the recording of the first webinar here.

http://afterschoolalliance.org/webinars.cfm?ID=1329E629-5056-A82E-7A74EED1E3FEE887

About this webinar:

By now many of us have heard of the critical importance of developing social and emotional skills, but it is often difficult to connect the frameworks and research to the everyday practices that help foster skill building in afterschool. In the first webinar in this series we focused on bridging the gap between research and practical application of social and emotional learning practices that support skill building.

In this webinar we will be digging into the assessment landscape to help programs recognize whether and how to implement assessments of social and emotional development. Ultimately, we want programs to be able to act with confidence to choose the right assessments, or alternative solutions.

Deb Moroney and Michael McGarrah from American Institutes for Research (AIR) will join us to talk about Ready to Assess, a suite of tools that can help afterschool and education leaders, practitioners, and policymakers decide whether and how to assess social and emotional development. Learn more by visiting http://www.air.org/SEL. AIR is a leader in the field of supporting social and emotional development through quality summer, afterschool, and expanded learning programs.

We will also be joined by Kristin Romens, Senior Consultant at The Learning Agenda, who will describe the progress and challenges educators face around implementing SEL best practices. She will connect the challenges that educators and youth development practitioners face to the Ready to Assess tools and describe a process that some out-of-school time organizations have used to develop their assessment strategy.

Come prepared to learn how Research + Action is moving the afterschool field towards ensuring all participants have opportunities for skill building and positive development.

A Math Learning Center in Philadelphia, Mathnasium of Andorra (just north of Manayunk and Roxborough in the Andorra Shopping Center), has part-time openings for highly skilled and motivated Instructors who have strong math backgrounds and love working with children of all ages. Knowledge of Everyday Math is a plus. Comfort levels with math through Algebra II, preferably Calculus, is a must.

This is not one on one tutoring (although due to scheduling, it may turn out to be), so being able to manage up to 4 students at one time is key. Also, being able to redirect when the child is not understanding the topic at hand is critical. Managerial opportunities await those who show leadership qualities. Instructors must be open to learning a new way to present math to students as well. This is a great opportunity for current education majors or new instructors who are interested in learning great methods to explain an often confusing subject.

The center hours are Monday through Thursday 3-8pm, Friday 3-6pm and Saturdays 10am-2pm. Instructors don’t have to be available for all days and times, but ideally any day from 3pm or afterward. Because we work with young people, all three clearances (Criminal, Child Abuse and FBI) are required for employment.

Please email resumes, whether you have clearances and a short blurb explaining why you are the best candidate to andorra@mathnasium.com.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since the creation of the Philadelphia Housing Trust Fund! To mark the anniversary, PACDC worked with the City’s Office of Housing and Community Development to produce a report highlighting how the HTF has changed lives and transformed communities.

http://pacdc.org/ten-year-htf-report

Whether it’s fixing a broken heater so a family can stay warm in the winter, making adaptive modifications to keep a person with physical needs in their home, transforming vacant lots into attractive affordable homes or repairing a low-income homeowner’s leaky plumbing, damaged roof, or other critical systems, the HTF works! It also contributes to our local economy: $109 million in HTF spending over 10 years leveraged more than $311 million in non-City funds, which created jobs, contributed to the tax base, and helped increase property values.

Unfortunately, the need for affordable home repair, development and homelessness prevention is enormous in Philadelphia, and state and federal funding cuts have hurt programs that serve the most vulnerable. That’s why PACDC is calling on Mayor Kenney and City Council to at least double dedicated revenue to the HTF, so we can help twice as many families and individuals!

The Central Philadelphia Development Corporation (CPDC)/Center City District (CCD) has released State of Center City, 2016, an in-depth look at the diverse sectors that make Center City Philadelphia the largest employment center in the region. The report combines data from many diverse industry reports with an exceptional range of original research, analysis and survey work. But it is also a candid look at what Philadelphia can and must do better to thrive with an expanding economy that can provide more employment opportunities.

As the CCD observes its 25th anniversary and CPDC its 60th in 2016, the new report documents the many positive changes that have transformed the downtown: rising office occupancy rates from 86.7% in 2014 to 88.5% in 2015, with suburban and out-of-market tenants accounting for 23% of newly leased space; dramatic attendance growth in 2015 at the Liberty Bell (23%), Franklin Institute (18%), Philadelphia Museum of Art (17%), African American Museum in Philadelphia (10%), and the Kimmel Center (25%); a 98% increase in hotel room supply from 5,613 in 1993 to 11,119 in 2015, and the highest hotel occupancy rate (76.7%) in recent history.

Since 1990, Greater Center City has been transformed from a 9-to-5 office district into a thriving, mixed-use setting for business, innovation, education, cultural and civic activity, as well as one of the fastest growing residential locations in the region. Greater Center City, the 7.7 square miles between Girard Avenue and Tasker Street, river to river, comprises only 6% of Philadelphia’s total land area, but holds 42% of Philadelphia’s 684,500 jobs, and attracted 25% of all new in-movers to Philadelphia since 2010, fueling an acceleration of downtown housing production. Since 2000, Center City’s population grew by 17% to 184,998, led by millennials and empty-nesters.

The 73-page report shows just how far Center City has come, highlights unresolved challenges and notes ways the city can continue to take advantage of the strong, national trends favoring large urban centers.

Well, this is your chance! The White House Student Film Festival is back with a new theme: “The World I Want to Live In.” From now through July 15th, we’ll be taking submissions from K-12 students across the country. We can’t wait to see your vision for the future, whether its fiction, animation, or documentary.

Check out http://WhiteHouse.Gov/FilmFest to learn more about the event and read the official submission guidelines.

Over the past years we’ve received thousands of submissions — truly amazing creations that inspired us film buffs here at the White House. This will be President Obama’s third and final White House Student Film Festival, so we encourage you to spread the word to friends, whether they are kids, parents or teachers with a passion for creating videos and sharing stories. Students under the age of 14 should have their parent, guardian, or teacher assist with submitting.

If your project is selected, you may have a chance to attend the Film Fest right here at the White House. The Official Selections will also be featured across the White House website and social media channels. You can watch several entries from the past two student film festivals for some inspiration.

Remember, submissions close on July 15th, so get filming to be sure that deadline doesn’t sneak up on you!

https://www.whitehouse.gov/filmfest

Show us the future you imagine, because we’d like to share it with the world. Don’t forget to spread the word: It’s time for lights, camera, action!

The Georgia E. Gregory Interdenominational School of Music Announces Plans For the 2016 Season of its Successful Summer Music & Performing Arts Camp Additional week added to camp season without rate increase

The Georgia E. Gregory Interdenominational School of Music has announced plans for the upcoming season, the 17th, of its successful Summer Music & Performing Arts Camp, and is celebrating the milestone by extending the camp season by a week, while maintaining costs at the same level as 2015.

The camp, conducted at the music school’s facilities in the underserved North Philadelphia community, provides children 6-13 years of age seven weeks of music instruction in keyboard, percussion, voice and dance as part of a complete camp experience.

The Summer Music & Performing Arts Camp is offered at the school, 1628 W. Allegheny Avenue, Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for seven weeks, from June 20-August 5, 2016. Lunch and snacks are provided daily.

Music instruction is provided each morning, with weekly camper performances. Afternoons feature a range of educational, recreational and cultural activities that include chess, karate and Monopoly tournaments; swimming and trips. Campers are also encouraged to read books and develop computer skills.

A highlight of this year’s camp will be the opportunity for campers to perform at and help with production of the annual Allegheny Avenue Arts Fest™ – a day of fun, friends, family, food and entertainment, featuring talented youth from the Nicetown-Tioga community.

“These are at-risk and special-needs children who can flourish in this environment,” GEGISOM Founder and Executive Director Joyce Drayton explained. “Many of our campers’ parents asked us at the end of last season if there was a way to extend the experience and education their children received in our unique setting,” added Mrs. Drayton, who also serves as camp director, ”but to do it without adding to the $110.00 cost per week, which for many of our families already requires substantial sacrifice.

“We have found a way to make that happen,” she said, noting GEGSOM’s long history in the community. In addition, the camp’s $15.00 registration fee will be waived for early camp enrollees.

Scholarships are available for the camp. To apply, contact the camp at gegisom@aol.com or 215-430-0435.

The Georgia E. Gregory Interdenominational School of Music is a nonprofit, faith-based institution that provides affordable music and performing arts instruction to inner-city youth and families in the underserved North Philadelphia community and surrounding area.
