Its mission is to disseminate rigorous scholarship on service-learning and community engagement, including research, theory, research reviews and book reviews. We seek to represent the breadth of scholarship in the service-learning and community engagement field, with articles from different countries and disciplines and representing a range of methodologies including community-engaged scholarship. Manuscripts that report findings linked to questions of broad importance to the field are encouraged; those that are primarily program descriptions or descriptions of service-learning/community engagement practices will not be accepted.

Theoretical or Conceptual Articles. Manuscripts that examine and advance the theoretical or conceptual foundations of service-learning and civic engagement.

William T. Grant Foundation Seeks Applications for Research to Understand Inequality

In recent years, inequality in the United States has become increasingly pervasive. At the same time, prospects for social mobility have gotten worse. The William T. Grant Foundation believes that the research community can play a critical role in reversing this trend. To that end, the foundation, which seeks to improve the lives of youth between the ages of 5 and 25, is accepting applications for research projects designed to advance understanding in the area of inequalities in youth development and/or to increase understanding of how research is acquired, understood, and used, as well as the circumstances that shape its use in decision-making.

Through its Understanding Inequality program, the foundation will award grants of up to $600,000 in support of research focused on ways to reduce disparities in academic, behavioral, social, and economic outcomes for youth.
ArtsCONNECT, a program of the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, is accepting proposals for projects that increase access to live performing arts engagements for audiences across the mid-Atlantic region, especially in underserved communities. The program is interested in fostering the sharing of information, experiences, and resources among presenters so as to build strong networks for future presentations.

The program provides support for projects in which at least three performing arts presenters from two different states work collaboratively to present a touring solo artist or ensemble. The tours must include performances as well as activities such as artist discussions, lecture demonstrations, master classes, and workshops designed to build greater appreciation for the work of the touring artist or ensemble. The program is also designed to develop and deepen relationships among the region’s presenters in order to build a more sustainable touring environment for professional performing artists.

Grant amounts will range between $1,000 and $10,000, except for projects that include the commissioning of new work, in which case grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded. Grants will be given directly to each presenter in a consortium whose project has been approved for support. Grants must be matched on a 1:1 basis, and the match may not include federal funds (whether they are received directly from a federal agency or indirectly, such as through a state agency or other entity).

ArtsCONNECT supports projects that are conceived and developed collaboratively by consortia of presenters from the mid-Atlantic region, including Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, or West Virginia. All presenters must be designated by the United States Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization or be a unit of state or local government. In addition, projects must feature professional performing artists who have at least two years of touring experience.

Informational webinars will be held on February 17, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. EST.

The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN) releases report assessing the Local Economic Impact of the First Five Years of Green City, Clean Waters.

This highly anticipated report, executed by Econsult Solutions, has interest from many local, regional, and national organizations, as well as members of City Council.

http://www.sbnphiladelphia.org/images/uploads/Green%20City,%20Clean%20Waters-The%20First%20Five%20Years.pdf

This report assesses the local economic impact of the first 5 years of Philadelphia’s comprehensive stormwater management plan, Green City, Clean Waters. The plan, managed by Philadelphia Water, is addressing EPA Clean Water Act regulations with decentralized, neighborhood scale, natural systems, otherwise known as green stormwater infrastructure (GSI).

“Just 5 years into this ambitious, daring, and innovative 25-year plan to address federal water quality requirements, GCCW is already demonstrating present results and future potential.” – Jamie Gauthier, Executive Director, Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia

Using the GSI Partners (a subset of SBN members) as a proxy for the larger industry, the report shows local economic growth is resulting from the public and private investments in GSI that are being catalyzed by the plan.

“The GSI Partners experienced double-digit annual revenue growth from 2013 to 2014. We estimate that these local businesses currently represent an annual economic impact of almost $60 million within the City of Philadelphia, supporting 430 local jobs and generating nearly $1 million in local tax revenues.” — Anna Shipp, GSI Partners Project Manager, Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia

The report also makes projections of what can be expected with continued investment in GSI. Indicators of local economic growth go beyond the growth of the businesses within the industry, so the report also evaluates the real estate market as well as neighborhood level benefits that have resulted from the public and private investment catalyzed by Green City, Clean Waters.

“Conservatively, over the life of GCCW, public and private investments in GSI are projected to produce a $3.1 billion impact in the Philadelphia economy, supporting roughly 1,000 jobs per year and generating $2 million per year in local tax revenues.” – Lee Huang, Senior Vice President and Principal, Econsult Solutions, Inc.

SBN will brief City Council on February 24th on the results of the report, and will use this report in their continued efforts to support the maximum triple bottom line success of Green City, Clean Waters.

About the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN)
The Sustainable Business Network (SBN) is a non-profit membership organization working to build a thriving, local, and sustainable economy in the Greater Philadelphia region. They are accomplishing this by growing and educating a broad base of local, independent businesses and educating policymakers and the public. Through their services, products, and internal practices, SBN’s 400 members are locally-owned businesses that strive to create positive change for the environment and in their communities.

About the Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Partners
The Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Partners is a priority initiative of SBN working to advance the local GSI industry, innovation, and the local economy as it relates to GSI. Formed in 2012 in response to Philadelphia’s ambitious and innovative stormwater management plan,

Green City, Clean Waters, the GSI Partners advocate for the greenest approaches to be facilitated and incentivized as much as possible, and for the public and private investment to remain as local as possible. Members include locally-owned engineering and landscape architecture firms; landscape contracting firms; builders; and material suppliers whose services and products pertain to GSI.

SBN supports Green City, Clean Waters and its triple-bottom line approach, and through the GSI Partners, SBN is working to maximize the local economic, environmental, and social impact of the plan.

The five-day intensive Institute provides faculty participants with the theory and practice required to effectively manage the politics of such change and contribute to the national STEM higher education reform effort.

All of the Institutes are identical in format and programming, and include a team of eight mentors who are nationally recognized leaders in STEM higher education. Institute mentors play a key role in guiding the Institute, contributing first-hand experience in institutional change leadership at the local and national levels. Mentors work with participants during the Institute to shape a personal agenda for leadership, and develop an action plan for an ongoing or new undergraduate STEM initiative at either the campus or national level. Significant time is allotted for informal conversation and reflection with mentors.

Additionally, the Institute strategically utilizes a combination of introspection and experiential learning—along with a variety of other approaches that include, but are not limited to, case studies, role-playing, and collaborative problem-solving exercises—in order to empower a cadre of leaders who are equipped to:

Lead Change with Courage;

Embrace Diverse Perspectives with Authenticity and Legitimacy; and

Communicate Bold, New Ideas with Thoughtfulness and Clarity

Emerging STEM faculty leaders from all institution types, especially community colleges and minority-serving institutions, are encouraged to apply. STEM faculty from historically underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

All applications are due on February 24, 2016. For more information on the Institute, visit http://www.aacu.org/summerinstitutes/sli.
