The ISL Summit seeks proposals for individual sessions and team panel presentations involving various stakeholders. The summit will take place October 23 – 25, 2016, at Kansas State University. The proposal deadline is January 30.

Preference will be given to sessions that address:

• Domestic examples of global learning and cooperative development partnerships
• Effective practices in host communities (i.e., volunteer internship placement, homestay networks/vetting, orientation for students, homestay families, in-country staff and NGO supervisors, etc.)
• Flipped or collaborative cultural sensitivity/competency training, global citizenship development, global activism, or global solidarity-building

Some of the most prominent voices on poverty and politics will come together on December 16 for a bipartisan audio conference on poverty, opportunity, and the 2016 election hosted by Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity. Speakers include Jimmy Kemp, president of the Jack Kemp Foundation; Neera Tanden, executive director of the Center for American Progress; and E.J. Dionne and Michael Gerson, columnists for the Washington Post.

The 2016 presidential campaign has already seen significant focus on issues related to poverty and opportunity. Promise Zone Hunger Relief Volunteer Director

The Promise Zone Hunger Relief Volunteer Director is primarily tasked with recruiting and engaging older adults (55+) in volunteerism addressing senior hunger. We have volunteer groups cooking at West Philadelphia Senior Community Center in Parkside, the People’s Emergency Center, and Drexel University students cooking at University Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in University City. This person would work closely with our Promise Zone Director of Literacy, the two positions cross-support each other in their programming. The Hunger Relief Director would also be responsible for managing the list of clients who receive the meals and coordinating the delivery of meals to home bound seniors of the Promise Zone and West Philadelphia.

The candidate should feel comfortable in the kitchen, garden, the senior center, and the classroom. Although this program recruits volunteers of all ages, our primary target base is older adults, as RSVP is a federal program of CNCS tasked with engaging older adults of Philadelphia’s senior community.

The Promise Zone Director of Hunger Relief is a granted position through to June 30, 2016, and may or may not be re-granted for a third year, of course we are hopeful that we would.

Principal Functions:
• Manage and oversee all aspects of the Promise Zone senior hunger initiatives, including staffing, partnerships, corporate outreach, etc.

• Create several training days for volunteers to be involved with community service opportunities for cooking, community gardening and other opportunities for hunger relief.
• Work with local corporations and universities for the purpose of recruiting corporate volunteers and to seek matching funds
• Oversee all volunteer functions for Promise Zone volunteers including:
o Oversee and manage all volunteer activities
o Maintaining and tracking all hours
o Implementation and management of a volunteer satisfaction survey and assist in implementing a client impact survey, as it relates to volunteer activities
• Develop and implement an on-line media presence for RSVP and this project, in particular including web-site, e-newsletters, and other social media outlets’ as they apply (facebook, twitter, etc.)
• Work with Director of Community Services and Hunger Relief Manager to implement creative strategies to increase awareness in the community about food insecurity, raise necessary funds for program operations, and increase community collaboration
• Create innovative and creative hunger relief volunteer programs for the City of Philadelphia
• Represent the agency at local, state and national initiatives as appropriate

Veterans of Foreign Wars is accepting applications from active and discharged military service members who have been deployed in the last six years and have run into unexpected financial difficulties as a result of deployment or other military-related activity. Since the program’s inception, Unmet Needs has distributed more than $5 million in assistance to qualified military families, with nearly half of those funds going directly toward basic housing needs.

The Unmet Needs Program provides financial assistance of up to $5,000 to assist with basic life needs in the form of a grant — not a loan — so no repayment is required. Eligible expenses include housing and vehicle payments; utility and phone bills; food and incidentals; children’s clothing, food, diapers, school, and childcare; and medical bills, prescriptions, and eyeglasses. Each expense will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and payments will be made directly to the recipient’s creditors.

The hardship must be the result of deployment, a military pay issue, or military-related illness or injury. It cannot be due to civil legal or domestic issues, misconduct, or any issues that are a result of spousal separation or divorce, financial mismanagement, or bankruptcy.

The Unmet Needs Disaster Assistance program provides grants of up to $500 to active service members and veterans who have been forced to vacate their primary residence due to a state-declared natural disaster. The assistance does not apply to vehicle damage or vehicle insurance deductibles, and applications must be received within thirty days of the disaster. To be eligible, the service member or veteran must have been honorably discharged from the military within the past seventy-two months prior to applying. In addition, the applicant must be the service member or eligible dependent listed under DEERS.

The Russell Sage Foundation is accepting applications for its Social, Economic and Political Effects of the Affordable Care Act grant program.

The program supports innovative social science research on the social, economic, and political effects of the Affordable Care Act. The foundation is especially interested in funding analyses that address important questions about the effects of the reform on outcomes such as financial security and family economic well-being, labor supply and demand, participation in other public programs, family and children’s outcomes, immigrant outcomes, and differential effects by age, race, ethnicity, nativity, or disability status. The foundation also is interested in research that examines the political effects of the implementation of the new law, including changes in views about government, support for future government policy changes, and impact on policy development outside of health care.

Funding is available for secondary analysis of data or for original data collection. Projects that propose novel uses of existing data or analysis of newly available or underutilized data are welcomed. The foundation will not fund research on the effects of the ACA on healthcare delivery or health outcomes (e.g., barriers to implementation, changes in the quality of care and health status, or trends in enrollment and affordability).

Start a Snowball, Inc. encourages kids of all ages to engage in philanthropic and community service activities. The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy is accepting applications from emerging scholars for research projects on life-course generosity in two different areas, the social sciences and the arts/humanities.

With support from the John Templeton Foundation, the new Science and Imagination of Living Generosity program is designed to attract and capture bold ideas within the study of life-course generosity and to advance multi-disciplinary methods and approaches within the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The program will provide funding for research projects that address three big philanthropy-related questions: Can virtuous habits be cultivated? How is generosity related to character, thrift, and creativity? Can cutting-edge scientific work and reflective expression promote individuals’ practice of generosity?

The program is organized into two funding tracks — social sciences (“the science of living generously) and arts/humanities (“the imagination of living generously”).

1) Social Science: The Lilly School will provide funding in support of original research on generosity throughout individuals’ lives and generosity’s effect on well-being and satisfaction. Projects that expand the use of several key Panel Study of Income Dynamics modules — including the Philanthropy Panel Study, the Child Development Supplement, and the Transition to Adulthood — are encouraged. This track also will fund innovative projects from investigators using other data sets, and from developmental psychologists, for example, who might be interested in the development of children’s generosity.

2) Arts and Humanities: This funding track will support original efforts within the fields of the arts and/or humanities focused on creating imaginative works that encourage reflection on generosity by individuals at different stages of life. Grants are intended to help provide the space and resources that individuals in the arts and humanities (e.g., writers, filmmakers, video game designers, musicians, historians, theologians, philosophers) need for creative work. Projects should illuminate the imagination within the science of generosity, with the goal of reducing the barriers that often exist between generosity science and the ways it is communicated.

Eight grants of up to $40,000 will be awarded. Funding can be used for course release time, summer salary for a faculty member (paid on a ten- or nine-month schedule), wages paid to student assistants working directly on the proposed research project, travel for data collection or dissemination (e.g., conference and workshop presentations), experiments, and computer programs for analysis.

Applicants within any field of study at an accredited university or research institution are eligible to apply. However, preference will be given to emerging scholars and innovators. Principal investigators must have completed their Ph.D. between 2007 and 2014.

To that end, the foundation has issued a Call for Applications for the sixth class of Macy Faculty Scholars, an annual program designed to identify and nurture the careers of promising educational innovators in medicine and nursing.

Scholars must implement new educational initiatives at their home institutions and participate in career development activities. Scholars will receive salary support of up to $100,000 per year for two years; at least 50 percent protected time for two years to pursue educational projects; active mentorship by a senior faculty member at their institution; access to the program’s national advisory committee; and opportunities to participate in Macy conferences and other national meetings.

To be eligible, applicants must have been a doctorally-prepared faculty member for more than five years in a United States accredited nursing school, allopathic medical school, or osteopathic medical school. Through its Systems for Action program, which studies novel ways of aligning the delivery and financing systems that support RWJF’s Culture of Health initiative, the foundation will award grants in support of studies that last a year or two and are designed to identify system innovations and interactions that drive collaboration and integration across the multiple financing and delivery systems needed to support a Culture of Health. Investigators will be expected to generate and disseminate rigorous scientific evidence related to optimizing the delivery of and financing systems for sustained improvements in health and well-being.

This funding opportunity will provide up to six S4A studies with grants of up to $250,000. The winning study teams will be expected to distribute their grant resources in support of research and stakeholder engagement in the most productive and equitable ways among partnering institutions and collaborating investigators based on division of effort, expertise, and capabilities. Study teams also will be expected to work closely with the National Coordinating Center and RWJF to disseminate and translate findings to targeted knowledge users so as to maximize real-world impact. The art curator will help us manage and grow our renowned art collection at the CRIB our residence for youth 18-23. Currently, the collection has over 400 pieces, and we are excited to add more!

Duties for this important opportunity include:

Art Rotation & Care

• Rotate the art every 3 months so that the displays are continually fresh, interesting, and appealing to the eye
• Store art and art supplies in an orderly, climate controlled, and respectful way

Artist solicitation and recruitment

• Connect with artist to add new permanent or loaned pieces to the collection
• Ensure that art on “loan” is returned to the artists in a proper way.
• Engage the larger community in the CRIB art collection through social media, including twitter, Pintrest, and Facebook

Job Summary
This individual will serve as the Director for Philadelphia-based preK-12 school work. This is a senior staff position. The individual will also serve as the Co-Director of the School Work Studio, an office within the School of Education that coordinates research and practices for all K-12-based school work. The office will be located at Drexel’s School of Education (SoE) but be closely affiliated with three West Philadelphia neighborhood schools, Morton McMichael (K-8), Powel Elementary (K-4) and SLA-Middle School (5-8) and, consequently, the School District of Philadelphia (SDP).

This individual will serve as the Director of school-based activities and initiatives within the School of Education and be the liaison between Drexel University, local schools, civic, community and district leaders. As such, this position is essential to articulating and realizing the School of Education’s role in helping Drexel University achieve a key goal of its Strategic Plan-to become a modern urban university serving its city and working collaboratively with its school-based neighborhood partners to develop and sustain strong schools for the community. This individual also will Co-Direct with the Dean a new School Work Studio office in the School of Education. The Studio will coordinate and advance school-based research and practice initiatives of School of Education personnel and Drexel personnel, both in Philadelphia and regionally.

Essential Functions
• Serve as the main Drexel liaison for Morton McMichael, Powel and the new SLA-Middle School practitioners, students, and families. This includes coordinating, and in some cases, directing the University’s school-based work in those schools, and supervising Drexel faculty, students and staff engaged in research and practice initiatives in these West Philadelphia schools.
• Serve as the correspondent for Drexel School of Education’s vision for Philadelphia-based preK-12 school work.
• Serve as a leader for strategic planning, expansion and development of the Powel-SLA-MS schools in West Philadelphia.
• Supervise School Work Studio staff, including postdoctoral researchers, classroom teachers, graduate students and/or undergraduate students.
• Manage and/or organize research and development activities of SoE faculty in Philadelphia schools. This includes supervision of a database of projects, as well as work with our Communications Director to develop and distribute a suite of products and marketing materials.
• Direct data collection and analysis associated with School Work Studio research and development work, particularly in essential areas such as literacy and STEM.
• Lead efforts to write grants and secure funds for SoE school-based initiatives.
• Develop strategies to measurably and continuously improve the SoE’s school-based work in West Philadelphia and share data with leadership. This will include efforts to plan, organize, coordinate, assess and evaluate SoE initiatives in West Philadelphia.
• Represent the SoE at local and national meetings and conferences focused on school – community development and related concerns.
• Help coordinate and align the School of Education’s work in West Philadelphia schools with other Drexel academic units.

Requirements
• A minimum of three years’ experience focused on school-based efforts in urban schools/districts. Experiences could include conceptualization, strategic planning, coaching and/or fundraising.
• A minimum of three years classroom teaching in urban settings.
• A graduate degree, Doctoral degree preferred, in a related area of Education, such as Urban Education, Early Childhood Education, English Education, Curriculum and Instruction or STEM Education.
• Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills.
• Excellent instructional, writing, and editing skills.
• Deep knowledge of the academic literature and best practices related to strategic planning, school-community partnerships, and urban education.

Desirable Experience
Work and prior experience in Philadelphia schools or organizations working directly with Philadelphia schools

TIP offers academic seminars lasting fourteen weeks to a diverse selection of teachers (known as Fellows). These seminars bring together university faculty and School District of Philadelphia teachers in a collaborative and collegial effort as professional educators. The seminar topics, based on input by the teachers themselves, are designed to improve their mastery of academic content.

A tangible result is the creation of curriculum units and lesson plans by the teachers, reviewed with feedback by their peers, for classroom use. The finished curricula and lessons are then archived on TIP’s website and can be accessed by teachers everywhere.

Each participating teacher who completes all requirements of the seminar series will be awarded an honorarium of $1,000. The seminars themselves are offered to the teachers at no cost, though there may be, as may be reasonably expected, some expenditure for books and/or materials.

Who is eligible?
Full-time K-12 teachers in the public schools of West and Southwest Philadelphia are eligible for the TIP program (with exceptions made for STEM seminars). At this time, TIP is not serving charter, private or parochial schools.
