Camp Boot: Community Engaged Research Training Curriculum for Lay Researchers

Camp Boot is designed to teach community residents the principles of community based participatory research. The purpose is to prepare community residents as lay researchers with the capacity to partner with academic and/or community-based researchers to co-design and co-implement health-related studies. The title, Camp Boot, is intentional. “Boot Camp” is usually based on a command and control, top down philosophy. Camp Boot intends to reverse that philosophy in its teaching approach, drawing on practices of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA), Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) and similar approaches (1-3). Adapted from the Partners in Research: Community and Faculty Training Curricula to Prepare Partners for Community-based Participatory Research Collaborations (4), Camp Boot includes more quantitative information. Camp Boot was developed and piloted in collaboration with a group of 40 African American and Hispanic residents representing medically underserved areas in Houston and Galveston neighborhoods (approximately 50% from each area). Participants were recruited by the advisory board (see question 7). Participants were paid a stipend of $600 for completing the 5 day, 40 hour training. Though our focus for the pilot project was with underserved populations, the curriculum is appropriate for a general audience of community residents interested in learning more about the basics of research, including non-geographically based communities and who have a desire to partner with academic researchers on CBPR projects. While the pilot implementation focused on training community residents, the curriculum could also be used for training and preparing community based organizations to integrate a research component into their programming.

In the past year, the childhood obesity epidemic has received significant attention from the clinical realm and the national media. Since the initial FreshRXTM symposium in June 2012, the conversation around food and health has expanded, especially with the American Medical Association’s recent decision to classify obesity as a disease and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children is pleased to set the table for the next phase of the conversation by hosting FreshRX: A Prescription for Health on October 30, 2013.

Over the course of one day, FreshRXTM will bring together national, regional and local thought leaders, policy change advocates, practitioners working in the field, and media to increase awareness of food inequality and its impact on health. This year’s theme, Exploring the Intersection between Food and Health will identify innovative responses to the obesity epidemic, highlight best practices, and provide practical strategies for incorporating a healthy living/active lifestyle agenda into health care practices. The Keynote Speaker is Roberta Friedman, Director of Public Policy at the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University.

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions. With 78 million adults and 12 million children – that’s 1 in 3 Americans – affected by this disease, the issue demands a systematic, multidisciplinary and strategic response.

About Bridging the Gaps

The Bridging the Gaps model is designed to broaden student training in the health professions through service to underserved communities. The program requires academic health institutions to accomplish the following:

Identify an underserved community with whom they hope to collaborate and build service-linked partnerships

Provide continuity of contact between the students and faculty at the academic health institution and the identified community and its organizations and agencies

Develop and integrate didactic and skill-building components for students, based on the belief that there is a set of skills necessary to provide health care to underserved populations

Ensure that supervision is provided by both academic and community preceptors

Regularly evaluate the program by eliciting and incorporating input from participating community and agency personnel, students, faculty, and the people served by the program

Inform the community of the progress of the program through a public forum and an annual report

In summary, the Bridging the Gaps program commits an academic health institution to sustain a relationship with an underserved community by providing meaningful service while training community-responsive health and social service professionals.

About UC Green:

About Us
Mission Statement

Through partnerships and education we empower volunteer environmental stewardship in University city and its surrounding communities.

History

UC Green was started in 1998 by the University of Pennsylvania’s Facilities and Real Estate Services. Neighborhood resident and Penn staffer, Esaul Sanchez, was the first executive director. Our first office was located in a Penn-owned building at 4013 Chestnut Street.

Early on, Penn worked to combat crime, trash and blight in University City. UC Green’s role, as then-President Judith Rodin put it, was to “unite community organizations, city agencies, university students and residents in local greening efforts.”

Esaul Sanchez recruited a team of volunteers from the community, Penn’s staff, and student body to attend the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Tree Tenders training. These volunteers would then go on to form the new UC Green Tree Tenders group and launch a series of tree and public landscape plantings.

In its first year, UC Green completed over 20 individual block greening projects. With this experience under its belt, UC Green began first-in-the-city large-scale community tree plantings. Hundreds of volunteers planted hundreds of street trees. In these early years, UC Green also completed new landscapes for public schools, public health centers, and public gardens. These landscapes featuring plants native to the area, including those found in Bartram Gardens, showy exotics, and medicinal plantings.
