A new report from ACT Inc underscores that while academic readiness is important, it is not the sole factor at play in college success. Other factors such as the fit of the school, financial aid opportunities, and interest in the offered majors are important dimensions of readiness.

Annually, ACT provides each state with The Condition of College & Career Readiness, a report that details the college readiness of students who took the ACT® college readiness assessment. Based on extensive empirical research, ACT has defined “college and career readiness” as the acquisition of knowledge and
skills a student needs to enroll and succeed in credit-bearing first-year college courses at a postsecondary institution without the need for remediation. This definition has been adopted by the Common Core state standards initiative.

July 29-31, 2013

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, NC

This meeting will bring together researchers, community residents, healthcare professionals, and federal partners committed to addressing EHD and EJ, in particular the grantees funded by NIEHS, EPA, NIMHD, CDC, OMH, and IHS. For the purposes of this meeting, EHD is defined as the unique contribution of the environment to health disparities.

Prioritize research areas to ensure the most vulnerable populations’ issues are addressed

Identify emerging EHD or EJ issues (new exposures that have not been considered in the past that may lead to new or additional health disparities) and,

Develop a set of priorities that enables participants to set multi-year plans to address the most critical EHD and EJ issues

The meeting will include presentations, small group discussions, demonstrations, and poster sessions that lead to the development of an action agenda. Presenters will highlight challenges, emerging opportunities, and strategies to build upon existing efforts that bring community groups together with researchers. Specifically, the meeting will highlight and promote best practices of current and past EHD and EJ projects, and identify emerging issues and new directions in research, communication, capacity building, training, and evaluation. An additional goal of the meeting will be to foster new partnerships at the local, state, regional, tribal, and national levels. The meeting is also intended to bring together new partners to the discussion of environmental health disparities. Such partners could include: anthropologists, sociologists, and economists as well as those with expertise in law, policy, analysis and evaluation.

POSITION SUMMARY

Providence Center emphasizes an asset-based approach to youth development, helping children and youth to recognize and build their strengths. We support our students to make healthy and positive choices, creating a tight-knit community of learners and leaders who strive to achieve their full potential and assist their peers to do the same.

Many of our students are English-language learners, and we provide academic assistance as well as a comprehensive social and emotional learning curriculum. The after school program is supported by Teen Mentors, local bi-lingual high school students who assist with the children and learn to act as positive role models and leaders. The Teen Mentors also receive support to complete high school and pursue their educational and vocational goals. In the summer, Providence Center is partnering with Temple University to offer a summer camp that serves English language learners while providing ESL field experience to aspiring teachers.

The Director of Youth Programs will be responsible for the planning, implementation, supervision, and assessment of Providence Center’s after school program and Teen Mentors. In addition, the Director will support and provide leadership for the summer camp.
