The Wilson Center, led by former Congresswoman Jane Harman, became the administrative home of WPSP in late summer 2012, and is working with the colleges to expand the WPSP partnership and programming for emerging women leaders in public service.

I am delighted to announce that Bryn Mawr will host a WPSP institute from Sunday 7 July to Friday 19 July 2013. The institute at Bryn Mawr will focus on women from post-conflict and transitional societies that have reached at least tentative peace. The institute will emphasize the relationship of peacebuilding and development; the structures, legal mechanisms, institutions, and norms that provide supports for effective governance and for economic and social development. This context will shape participants’ work in leadership development, and will seek to build their capacity to engage across differences and form alliances in the hard work of reconstruction.

We are eager to disseminate information about the WPSP institute at Bryn Mawr to women around the world who may be interested in attending. [I should note that the institute is offered at no cost to admitted delegates; airfare is also provided.] I would appreciate your help in forwarding this announcement widely, both to individuals and to relevant networks.

Details about the institute, including the application, can be found on the institute website.

Thursday, January 24 at 5:00 p.m.
Penn Bookstore, 3601 Walnut Street

Authors Rita Axelroth Hodges and Steve Dubb discuss their new book, The Road Half Traveled: University Engagement at a Crossroads. With introduction by Ira Harkavy, Associate Vice President and Director of the Netter Center.

A growing number of universities are dedicating resources to support their surrounding communities, but much potential for advancement remains. A university’s mission as an “anchor institution,” as defined by the authors, is to consciously and strategically apply the institution’s long-term, place-based economic power, in combination with its human and intellectual resources, to better the welfare of the community in which it resides. Drawing on ten diverse universities as case studies, this eye-opening book explores practices and strategies that can be employed to improve conditions in low-income communities and emphasizes the critical roles of university leaders, philanthropy, and policy in this process. To date the most comprehensive account of the range of roles played by universities as anchors in their communities, The Road Half Traveled provides a forward-thinking perspective on new horizons in university and community partnership.

Penn alumna Rita Axelroth Hodges is Assistant Director at Penn’s Netter Center for Community Partnerships. Steve Dubb is Research Director at the Democracy Collaborative of the University of Maryland, College Park.

The Road Half Traveled is available online at MSU Press.
