November 28, 2012
1 pm EST
Taking Community Schools to Scale

An increasing number of schools are using the community school strategy to forge partnerships between schools, local organizations, institutions of higher education, and others with the intention of improving results for children and families. They are providing innovative academic and non-academic supports – with great success. But what’s the next step? How do you showcase the gains your community school initiative has made both explicitly and implicitly? How do you add more schools and build a system of community schools? What’s the best way to bring in additional partnerships? Learn how developing community school systems in Ogden, UT, Redwood City, CA, and Toledo, OH are taking their initiatives to the next level.

Presenters:

Kathleen Bideaux – Ogden Community Schools (Ogden School District)
Sandra Portasio – Redwood 2020 (Redwood City School District)
Angeline Lee, Greg Braylock – Schools as Community Hubs (United Way of Toledo)

Unfortunately, millions of dollars of these federal and state tax credits go unclaimed each year. As members of the Coalition for Community Schools, you are uniquely positioned to spread the word about these credits to families in your community. This webinar will include an overview of available tax credits, a discussion on the policy landscape, and tips and how to get the word out to eligible families.

Teacher Voice: How Unions Guide Community School Initiatives

Recent events have highlighted situations where school districts and teacher unions have clashed on the best way to reform education in their community. The Community School strategy, however, is one education reform that is uniting unions, district administrators, and the community. On this webinar national and local leaders will explain how union representation in community school leadership teams can help teachers perform their jobs more efficiently and effectively. After all, teachers know their students and families needs and strengths and serve as a critical part of any successful community school.

Presenters:

Bill Raabe – National Education Association
Shital Shah – American Federation of Teachers
Keith Gambill – Evansville Teachers Association
Graduation rates have hit a plateau, with high schools across the country graduating just 71.7 percent of students in 2012. In recent years, many efforts to address the dropout crisis have focused on large, urban schools and districts. Yet, a national effort to reduce the number of students dropping out requires policymakers to consider strategies for all communities, including rural schools and districts. Particularly for rural communities, policies and programs to prevent and recover high school dropouts should build upon resources and capacities which already exist within the community. This webinar will explore the use of state data systems for the development and implementation of early warning systems in Sussex County, Virginia, and will describe the Communities In Schools model that has been implemented in the Greater Central Texas region.

Speakers for this webinar will include Charles Harris, Superintendent, Sussex County Public Schools, Richelle Hines, Data Specialist, Sussex County Public Schools, and Mary Erwin Barr, Executive Director, Communities In Schools of Greater Central Texas.

The American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF), a nonprofit, nonpartisan professional development organization based in Washington, DC, provides learning opportunities for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers working on youth and education issues at the national, state, and local levels.

This international conference aims to put ‘race’ back on the agenda in education and community theory and practice. From the backlash against ‘failed’ multiculturalism in Europe, to the marginalisation of ‘race’ in inclusive education to a shift in preference for discussing culture and ethnicity rather than racism, it seems that ‘race’ and ‘challenging racism’ has been silenced from broader discussions about educational inclusion and social justice. This conference aims to bring together academics, policy makers and practitioners from around the globe to critically debate and share practice experiences about ‘race’, racism and anti-racism in different national contexts.

Deadline: December 18, 2012 (Brief Proposals)

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has announced a Call for Proposals for Public Health Services and Systems Research.

Studies funded through the call will focus on research projects that examine the organization, finance, and delivery of public health services and the subsequent impact on health outcomes. Approximately $3.2 million will be awarded in two funding categories:

1) Short-term studies — Grants will provide up to $200,000 for a maximum of twenty-four months. This category includes qualitative or quantitative studies that use research to explain how elements of the public health system influence the effective implementation of evidence-based public health strategies and/or implementation of public health-primary care integration strategies.

2) Complex and comprehensive studies — A limited number of grants will provide up to $450,000 for a maximum of thirty-six months. This category includes multistate time-series analyses and other in-depth studies focusing on comparative effectiveness studies that test the impact of alternative strategies for delivering evidence-based public health services and/or public health-primary care integration. Proposals exceeding either twenty-four months or $300,000 should specify the data collection or analysis steps that justify a longer grant period and larger budget.

Applicants may be either public entities or nonprofit/academic institutions that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; private foundations and non-functionally integrated Type III supporting organizations are ineligible. The foundation will give preference to proposals submitted by multidisciplinary teams that include state, local, and/or tribal public health agencies; nonprofit organizations; and/or academic institutions. Applicant organizations must be based in the United States or its territories, and proposed projects must focus on the U.S. public health system and its services.

Visit the RWJF Web site for the complete Call for Proposals and application instructions.
