Fruition Academy of Social Imagination and Action

The Fruition Academy of Social Imagination and Action, an online school for scholars and practitioners who are interested in organizational and social change, is launching in October 2012. The academy is a new component of The Fruition Coalition, an organization that is working to actively create a flourishing world by supporting progressive social change and community benefit organizations through education, dialogue, and consulting that integrates research, intuition, experience, and dreams.

There are six classes scheduled for this fall:

Teaching, Learning, and Transformation
Friday October 5, 2012, 11 a.m. EDT

Perhaps the most critical teaching and learning that takes place in our lives occurs through the interpretation of our everyday interactions. Every moment is an opportunity to teach and to learn. Through exploration of ideas including Socratic method, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, multiple intelligences, punk pedagogy, and Bloom’s taxonomy of learning domains, participants will develop a greater understanding of their own philosophy of teaching and learning and create a strategy to use this to advance progressive social change goals.

Social Reciprocity
Friday October 19, 2012, 11 a.m. EDT

This class will explore the generative potential of social reciprocity which we define as doing more good in the world and, as a result, inspiring others to do the same. We will examine the social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of reciprocity and discuss its implications for community organizing, outreach, fundraising, and activism.

Existential Leadership
Friday November 2, 2012, 11 a.m. EDT

As leaders for social change, we authentically serve our communities as Kierkegaardian Knights of Faith. In this class, we will discuss cultivating radical self-awareness, the process of becoming, intersubjective exploration, negotiating the space between the self and the system, discovering truth, creating meaning, the transformative potential of angst, and how to redefine and reclaim the concepts of freedom and responsibility.

Evaluation Planning
Friday November 16, 2012, 11 a.m. EST

Process and outcome evaluation can help us align programs, strategic initiatives, and advocacy efforts with the dynamic needs of the community served and teach us how to strengthen the cumulative impact of our work. In this class, we will discuss the purpose of evaluation, creating an evaluation plan, developing organizational capacity to collect and analyze data, integrating and communicating results, contributing to the global knowledge base, effectively using resources for evaluation, collaboration, creating opportunities for community engagement and participation, and managing expectations for accountability.

Quantum Theory for Activists
Friday December 7, 2012, 11 a.m. EST

This class will examine social change from the systemic to the subatomic level through the lens of quantum theory with particular emphasis on Bohr, Einstein, Schrodinger, and Capra. We will explore how science frames our understanding of the world and discuss how interconnectedness, irrationality, uncertainty, complexity, energy, tension, disruption, and chaos influence self-organization and political mobilization. We promise that there will not be any complicated formulas in this class – it’s all fun!

Theatre of Change
Friday December 14, 2012, 11 a.m. EST

In this class, we will satisfy our thirst for drama with a theatrical interpretation of progressive activism and the social change process. We will examine how plot, setting, and performance intertwine to evoke emotion and provoke action and learn how these can be manipulated to achieve specific social and political outcomes. We will also discuss roles, props, scenery, wardrobe, choreography, and engagement with multiple audiences. Students will learn how to develop dynamic characters and tell compelling stories to create memorable performances.

PHENNDies may try a class at no cost by using the promotional code FCFRIENDS2012 at checkout. To register or for more information, visit http://www.fruitioncoalition.com.

Learn the legislative process and policymaking from the inside. The Office of Philadelphia City Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. is looking for talented, energetic, hard-working, out-of-the-box thinkers as interns for the fall semester and beyond. Councilman Jones is City Council’s Majority Leader and Chair of its Committee on Public Safety. He is arguably one of the most productive and far-reaching Council members—advocating tirelessly to halt devastating mortgage foreclosures, investigating the impact of Marcellus Shale drilling on the city and holding a broad-based policy summit on the impact an increased aging population will have on the future of Philadelphia, to name just a few examples. This recent session Councilman Jones spearheaded a hearing on Youth Courts and continues to probe the City’s budget with a forensic vengeance! Students have prepared witnesses for public hearings, written resolutions and policy briefings, drafted legislation, staffed intergovernmental meetings and represented the Councilman in zoning hearings. Interns have also had the opportunity to meet many high level public figures, including First Lady Michelle Obama. So whether it’s community economic development, local tax or energy policy, human services, marketing, public relations or criminal justice issues, there is a place for you in our dynamic and fast-paced organization. As one former intern put it:

“Interning with Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. was one of the most interesting and educational experiences of my college career. I really got to be a part of what goes on in City Hall, and I gained far more hands-on knowledge and experience than I ever could have from any university class. It’s far more than the internship stereotype of making copies and fetching coffee. Though we have to do some of that as well, the staff has high expectations of the interns, and in return, the interns are expected to produce substantive material that is beneficial for the office.”

Law students and those undertaking paralegal studies will have the opportunity to work on zoning and land-use cases and assist in providing legal constituent service assistance.

Please e-mail cover letter, resume and short (2-3 pages) writing sample to Shoshana.bricklin@phila.gov. Include “INTERN APPLICATION” in the subject line. While currently unpaid, we are an eligible work-study placement. Also consider fulfilling any community service/pro-bono or academic credit requirements with our office. For more information on Councilman Jones see http://www.curtisjonesjr.com; http://www.facebook/CouncilmanCurtisJonesJr; or http://www.twitter.com/Mr4thDistrict

We are seeking fellows on college campuses in Colorado, Florida, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Campus Vote Project Fellow — approximately 10 hours per week, unpaid

The Fair Elections Legal Network is looking for energetic young leaders who are ready to make a difference on their college campuses this election cycle. Are you tired of hearing that young people don’t vote because they’re lazy or just don’t care enough to participate in the political process? Have you had enough of the attacks on student voters that make it harder for students to make their voices heard?

If you are, join our team and become a Campus Vote Project fellow!

Campus Vote Project is a campaign designed to empower college students and administrators with the tools they need to break down barriers to voting that disproportionately affect college students. Two-thirds of college students who did not vote in the 2010 election cited reasons that have more to do with a lack of information than a lack of interest. They didn’t know residency rules, missed important dates and deadlines, or hadn’t learned the ins and outs of the registration process. We also know that 87% of students who register to vote go to the polls. When students are empowered with information, they show up!

Campus Vote Project fellows will be essential to implementing programs on college campuses that break down barriers to voting for students. They will be responsible for the following tasks from now until the election:

Organize, organize, organize: Recruit campus organizations and coordinate their election awareness, voter registration, and “get-out-the-vote” efforts.
Determine a plan of action: Work with students to determine which programs and reforms should be implemented on your campus based on the Campus Vote Project toolkit.
Bring administrators on board: Coordinate the implementation of student voter programs with college administrators.
Empower students with the resources they need: Be the primary liaison between students working on student voting and the Fair Elections Legal Network so we can provide them with the support they need.

To apply to be a Campus Vote Project fellow, email a resume and a 250-word statement of interest to Erica Evans at eevans@campusvoteproject.org.
