Join us for a forum on RFA’s evaluation of Philadelphia’s Renaissance Schools Initiative

Philadelphia’s Renaissance Schools Initiative has been the source of much discussion and debate since it was implemented in 2009 with the goal of dramatically improving chronically low-performing schools in a short period of time. Last month, RFA’s evaluation of the Renaissance Schools found that the first year saw impressive gains in student achievement, which generated further discussion about the reform effort, its effectiveness and its sustainability.

We want to hear your questions and comments, too. You are invited to a public forum to discuss RFA’s Renaissance Schools report on Tuesday, April 10 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. The forum is an opportunity to hear from the researchers who conducted the study, as well as education officials and community leaders.

Space is limited. RSVP to info@researchforaction.org.

Details

Philadelphia, PA 19104

Background

RFA’s research on the Renaissance Schools represents the most exhaustive study of school turnarounds – a key element in federal and state education reforms – in the commonwealth and region to date. The study focused on determining whether the first group of 13 schools – both District-run Promise Academies and Charter-managed schools – made early progress toward the longer-term goal of dramatically improving student outcomes. Overall, both district- and charter-managed models of Renaissance Schools made notable progress in Year One of the Initiative, improving significantly on all other student outcomes measured. However, these schools remain among the lowest performing in the District. It is also too early in the life of the Initiative to determine whether these preliminary results will be sustained over time.

The Community Women’s Education Project (CWEP) is a community‐based education organization that addresses the social and economic inequities that affect at‐risk families. Founded in 1977, CWEP provides a continuum of education programs, vital support services, and connections to the workplace that have enabled over 17,000 adults to prepare for and obtain sustainable employment. CWEP’s mission is to help low‐income women in Philadelphia improve their life skills, acquire a family‐sustaining wage, and achieve self‐sufficiency by providing educational and supportive services in a personalized and welcoming environment. In addition to adult education programs, CWEP’s historic facility in Kensington houses a Head Start and nationally accredited child care center. Volunteers are an invaluable resource for CWEP’s staff and clients; they are central to CWEP’s daily operations and ultimate success. CWEP is currently seeking volunteers to work as tutors in their adult GED preparation courses. Volunteer tutors will work with instructors to offer one‐on‐one assistance in the areas of reading, writing, math, science, and/or English language development to adults preparing for their GED. These courses meet Mondays through Thursdays from 9am‐noon. Tutors are also needed to provide additional support to individual students outside of scheduled class hours. In addition to GED tutoring, opportunities are also available for volunteers to create their own volunteer work within the scope of the services CWEP offers. CWEP asks that all volunteers commit to working approximately 2 hours a week for a minimum of 8 weeks. Volunteering at CWEP offers the opportunity to positively contribute to an individual’s life by assisting them on their journey to earn their high school equivalency diploma, to improve their competency with English, to qualify for jobs and job training programs and gain family‐sustaining employment, and to prepare for college. Through their work at CWEP, volunteers build rewarding relationships with the individuals with whom they work and they gain the exposure, insight, and compassion necessary to be life‐long advocates for systemic change on poverty policy, regardless of the professional path they ultimately pursue. To find out more information about CWEP go to http://www.cwep.org or contact Amy Bach at: bachaj@hotmail.com. We hope you will consider volunteering for this important community organization.

“Loved the experience of being with such a diverse artistic group. Got a great overview of factors never considered in doing this work. The mission of BuildaBridge and the power of the arts was really affirmed repeatedly and compellingly.” (2009 Alumna)
“I am so grateful for this experience. I feel transformed. I am now aware of the research that lay ahead of me to construct my classroom and lesson plan. Thank you for allowing me to participate and supporting my transformation!” (2009 Alumna)
“An inspired immersive intensive experience where faculty and participants are equally fascinating” (2011 Alumna)
“Rather than a training institute, I see this as valuable on-going professional development. Track 2 seems well planned and engaging.” (2009 Alumna)
The stories of people using arts in their communities were inspiring and one of the things that will stick with me for a long time. (regarding the Alumni symposium) – 2011 participant
