In honor of Social Work Month, the SP2 Alumni Council is convening a three-hour symposium on &#8220;Bullying Across the Lifespan: Targeting the Bully.&#8221; The symposium will facilitate a conversation on bullying among: (1) school-age youth, (2) workforce adults, and (3) dependent elderly. In addition, participants will learn about the topic from the perspective of the bully, victim of bullying and the change agent. Finally, participants will engage in a dialogue about creating strategies for making a difference.</p>

The Children&#8217;s Defense Fund’s Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. She has received over a hundred honorary degrees and many awards including the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Prize, the Heinz Award, and a MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship. <p>Physicians for Social Responsibility&#8217;s annual 5K Run/Walk, Legs Against Arms, is all about strengthening our legs as we oppose illegal arms (handguns) in Philadelphia.  Violence is a major public health problem in our country, and Philadelphia is no exception.  At the close of 2011, Philadelphia once again topped the list of major U.S. cities for its murder rate &#8211; 324 victims.</p>
<p>According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, &#8220;during the length of the U.S. combat operations in the Iraq war, 3,517 American troops were killed in action &#8211; and 3,113 people were killed in Philadelphia&#8221;.  The vast majority of violent crimes are committed with a firearm.</p>

In addition, we’re challenging campus organizers to submit their best “Pledgucation” events held as part of their Pledge programming during the Spring of 2012 as well as their best “Spread the Pledge” promotion ideas to get more schools involved in their region. Winners will have their events and ideas featured in GPA press releases, magazine articles, social media postings and more!</p>
<p>Students define for themselves what it means to be socially and environmentally responsible. Students at a hundred colleges and universities  (and some high schools) are using the pledge at some level. The schools involved include liberal arts colleges (e.g. Bates and Grinnell); state universities (such as Colorado and Florida); private research universities (including Stanford and George Washington University); and schools outside the U.S. (e.g., Taiwan and Canada). The Pledge has also been at professional and high schools.</p>
<p>Graduates who voluntarily signed the pledge have sought out employment reflecting their values and visions, turned down jobs with which they did not feel comfortable, and worked to make changes once on the job. For example, they have promoted recycling at their organization, removed racist language from a training manual, worked for gender parity in high school athletics, and helped to convince an employer to refuse a chemical weapons-related contract.</p>
<p>The Pledge was initiated at Humboldt State University in California. Manchester College in Indiana coordinated the campaign effort for ten years, and Bentley University near Boston took over the reins during 2007-2008. The project has taken different forms at different institutions. For example, at Manchester, students sign and keep a wallet-size card stating the pledge, the pledge is printed in the formal commencement program, and students and supportive faculty wear green ribbons at commencement. (At a few schools, a different color ribbon is used.).  At Bentley University the pledge is a &#8220;capstone&#8221; of  its four-year Civic Leadership Program and at Humboldt State, student government funds a student pledge coordinator internship.</p>
<p>In a sense, the Pledge operates at three levels: students and graduates making choices about their employment; schools educating about values and citizenship rather than only knowledge and skills; and the workplace and society being concerned about more than just the bottom line. The impact is immense  if only a significant minority of the millions of college graduates each year sign and live out the Pledge.</p>

<p>The D5 Coalition, a five-year effort to increase and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of philanthropy, has announced a Request for Proposals for qualitative data projects on the role of organizational culture and characteristics in fostering diversity in philanthropy.</p>
<p>One of D5&#8217;s strategic priorities involves advancing research efforts on diversity and philanthropy that will help illuminate best practices, key challenges, and critical outcomes. The coalition seeks to fund research projects designed to deepen the understanding of the role that organizational culture and characteristics play in promoting diversity within philanthropy.</p>
<p>Although research shows that organizational culture plays a vitally important role in how diversity can be leveraged for greater effectiveness, to date there are relatively few studies that document the particular strategies and practicesphilanthropic organizations use. Through this RFP, D5 seeks to provide a wider breadth of research and resources to foundations that can ultimately inform organizational practices related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Projects may include but are not limited to issues related to the recruitment and retention of diverse foundation leaders and staff, foundation policies and practices that promote or hinder inclusion, and outcomes of foundation diversity.</p>
<p>All interested parties, including advanced graduate students, early career academics, consultants, and other researchers are encouraged to apply. All types of methodological approaches are welcome, including case studies, survey research, focus group research, and analysis of archival data. Applicants should demonstrate familiarity with the literature on diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a working knowledge of relevant efforts that have been undertaken in the nonprofit, corporate, and government sectors.</p>

<p>The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey has launched Phase 2 of its Health Center Initiative to support 501(c)(3) nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Centers, free/volunteer clinics, and independent clinics in New Jersey that expand access to healthcare for the state&#8217;s uninsured and underserved residents.</p>
<p>The $2 million, two-year grant initiative will provide funding to applicants whose proposed initiatives facilitate individuals&#8217; access to primary and specialty care that helps prevent and manage health concerns and promotes overall well-being.</p>
<p>The Phase 2 Request for Proposals has been structured to complement the federal healthcare reform law. For example, special consideration will be given to health center applicants that seek funding to implement the law’s Patient-Centered Medical Home model. Special consideration will also be accorded to proposals that incorporate a nurse-managed health center model.</p>
<p>HCI 2 grants will provide funding of up to $125,000 annually for up to two years ($250,000 maximum). Grant projects of any duration, from one month to two years, will be considered. There will be one funding round only, so applicants should request funding for the full term of their project.</p>

<p>The William T. Grant Foundation seeks to fund high-quality empirical research with the goal of improving the lives of youth between the ages of 8 and 25 in the United States. To that end, the foundation has released its fourth Request for Proposals on Understanding the Acquisition, Interpretation, and Use of Research Evidence in Policy and Practice.</p>
<p>The purpose of the RFP is to help increase the understanding of how research evidence is acquired, interpreted, and used in policy and practice that affect youth.</p>
<p>In 2012, the foundation plans to support research projects with awards ranging from $100,000 to $600,000 for direct and indirect costs over two to three years.</p>
<p>The foundation will consider applications for newly initiated studies as well as add-on studies to existing projects. Add-on studies must address research questions not covered by prior funding from the W. T. Grant Foundation or other funders, although they may cover secondary analyses of existing data or collection and analyses of new data.</p>
<p>The foundation encourages interdisciplinary projects, and welcomes applications from researchers in various fields and disciplines such as anthropology, communications, economics, education, family studies, human development, organizational studies, political science, prevention research, psychology, public administration, public policy, public health, social work, and sociology.</p>
<p>To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be employed at a nonprofit institution, either in the U.S. or abroad.</p>
<p>Applicants have two opportunities to submit Letters of Inquiry: by April 3 and by August 1, 2012.</p>

<p>FELN has developed a set of best practices, which we describe in the CVP toolkit, to make college campuses more voter-friendly and reduce barriers to voting that disproportionately affect students. A few of these projects include providing students with a voter ID, establishing a student poll worker program, and getting students transportation to the polls. FELN will work with campus partners who are interested in implementing a CVP project by providing research assistance, technical advice, training, webinars, conference calls, communications collaboration, and other assistance partners request during the organizing process.</p>

<p>Farm Education Interns at Greener Partners’ farm hubs participate in the following activities:</p>
<p>Summer Camp Support – During the summer, Farm Education Interns’ primary responsibility will be to assist the lead Educator with farm‐based programs and activities during the summer camp. This includes acting as a camp counselor during camp hours, assisting with and occasionally leading camp activities, and ensuring safety of all campers.</p>
<p>Farm Education Curriculum Development – In addition to working directly with the summer camp, Interns will have the opportunity to research and plan educational activities unique to the site they are working on. This could include developing a program about how watersheds affect crops, a series of activities that involve young people in creating a compost bin, or another topic of interest. Interns will work under the supervision and support of Greener Partners’ education staff to develop the topic area, create the activity plan, and ultimately lead the activity with campers.</p>
<p>Administrative Support &#8211; Support advancement of the summer camp and farm education program by assisting with data entry and project evaluation, researching best practices, and other projects as assigned. Hours and Compensation Internship period: June 27 – August 1</p>
<p>Hours: Camp hours run from 9 am – 12 pm during the weeks of July 2 – July 27. Interns must be available 22 hours per week during those times and additional hours as specified. Stipends are available for college level interns. In addition to the stipends, Farm Education Summer Interns with Greener Partners may be able to earn college credit through their university or college.</p>

<p>Internship Overview<br />
Greener Partners’ Farm Education Internships provide college-‐level students opportunities to gain hands-on experience on a community farm, and in planning and implementing farm-­based programming. The<br />
internship integrates experiential learning, teaching, and summer camp program development over the course of two to three months in the summer.</p>
<p>Farm Education Interns at Greener Partners’ farm hubs participate in the following activities:<br />
Summer Camp Support – During the summer, Farm Education Interns’ primary responsibility will be to assist<br />
the lead Educator with farm-­based programs and activities during the summer camp.  This includes acting as a camp counselor during camp hours, assisting with and occasionally leading camp activities, and ensuring safety of all campers.</p>
<p>Farm Education Curriculum Development – In addition to working directly with the summer camp, Interns will have the opportunity to research and plan educational activities unique to the site they are working on.<br />
This could include developing a program about how watersheds affect crops, a series of activities that<br />
involve young people in creating a compost bin, or another topic of interest. Interns will work under the<br />
supervision and support of Greener Partners’ education staff to develop the topic area, create the activity plan, and ultimately lead the activity with campers.</p>
<p>Administrative Support -­ Support advancement of the summer camp and farm education program by assisting with data entry and project evaluation, researching best practices, and other projects as assigned.</p>
<p>Hours and Compensation</p>
<p>Internship Period: June 13 &#8211; August 14<br />
Hours:</p>
<p>Camp hours run from 9 am – 2 pm during the weeks of June 18 – August 10. Interns must be available 32 hours per week during those times and additional hours as specified. Stipends are available for college level interns.</p>
<p>In addition to the stipends, Farm Education Summer Interns with Greener Partners may be able to earn college credit through their university or college.</p>
