Overview
Reporting to the Associate Director of Civic House, the Program Coordinators oversee the development, management, administration, and evaluation of programs which support the civic engagement activities of University of Pennsylvania students.  The Program Coordinators will assist in communicating with community agencies, in promoting and supporting community involvement, advocacy, and service-learning among Penn students, in advising students and organized groups, and in office planning and administration.  During the academic year, the position requires availability during several evenings and occasional weekends.

Specific Duties:

As there are two positions, the duties enumerated below will be divided between two people, depending on the skills and experiences that successful candidates bring to the position.

Civic House Associates Coalition (CHAC)

As the key advisor for CHAC and its Executive Board (CHAC Exec.), the Program Coordinator is involved in all of the organization’s functions, including:

– providing support and guidance to CHAC and the CHAC Exec.
– Attending weekly meetings with CHAC Exec and weekly meetings with the CHAC Co-Chairs
– With outgoing CHAC Co-Chairs, developing and implementing all aspects of CHAC Exec’s annual orientation retreat
– advising organizational leaders with goal setting, leadership transition, establishing budgets, and goal development and implementation

– with the other Program Coordinator, developing and implementing the annual Leadership Gathering for members of CHAC
– Overseeing the CHAC recognition process for new service and advocacy organizations
– maintaining relationship with the advisor to the Student Activities Council (SAC) to facilitate the cooperation of the two groups
– Advising and providing technical assistance to service and advocacy groups as necessary

PennCORP (Penn Community OutReach Program)

Provide community involvement opportunities and educational experiences for selected incoming first-year students consistent with Civic House’s mission, orienting incoming students to Penn, West Philadelphia and local community involvement opportunities. Specific responsibilities include:

· Overseeing recruitment, selection, training of PennCORP staff;
· Supervising PennCORP staff;
· Overseeing management, administration, implementation and evaluation of PennCORP Program;
· Providing guidance and support to PennCORP student staff;
· Serving as a resource for curriculum development of PennCORP issue tracks and West Philadelphia orientation, and;
· Facilitating and presenting training sessions.

West Philadelphia Tutoring Project

· Coordinating recruitment, orientation, regular training, and assignment of all volunteer tutors;
· Developing and implementing comprehensive training program for tutors and Executive Board members;
· Conducting planning and follow-up visits to schools, evaluating progress of Project;
· Supervising Executive Board members, who serve as liaisons with tutors and Project schools;
· Maintaining records of all tutoring activities, and preparing regular reports and updates on Project;
· Coordinating transportation system for tutors;
· Promoting and assisting with special events related to the Project;
· Organizing Site Coordinators’ meetings as needed.

Alternate Spring Break
Serve as the principal advisor to Alternate Spring Break and its Executive Board by providing advice and performing tasks toward their success including:

· Maintaining constant communication with the Board throughout the academic year and summer via email correspondence and a handful of meetings per semester;
· Advising the group exploring service trips beyond the spring break period
· Directing the group in their use of University resources and facilitate their communication with key stakeholders including the Office of Risk Management, the Travel Office, the Student Activities Council, the Office of Student Affairs, and with external organizations essential to the trips’ success;
· Training the Board and Site Leaders for success as responsible leaders of the trips, with particular emphasis on the importance of both respect for University policy and communication with the Program Coordinator while on their trips. Also introducing facilitation skills suitable for daily reflection and examples of reflection techniques, and;
· Serving as the campus contact for students and their parents while the groups are on their trips – available by phone at all times for the duration of their trips.

The following responsibilities will be required in both positions:
Student Group Advising

· With the Director and Associate Director, providing advice and support to student groups involved in
a wide range of civic engagement efforts.

Civic House Programming and Other Duties

· Work with other staff and students toward developing and implementing programs in support of Civic House’s mission. Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to:
· Leading volunteer orientation, training, and reflection;
· Developing collaborative events with other campus and community organizations;
· Coordinating and staffing special Civic House events;
· Assisting with hiring, training, and supervision of part-time staff;
· Developing and implementing short- and long-term programmatic goals;
· Coordinating new projects and programs;
· Establishing and maintaining relationships with other University offices, student groups, and organizations and individuals external to the University;
· Preparing office publications, including newsletters, brochures, and training materials, and;
· Updating and developing Civic House website and other social media.

QUALIFICATIONS:
BA/BS or equivalent required, as is a minimum of 1-3 years professional-level involvement in higher
education community service-learning activities, work with community-based organizations, and/or
student development work. Master’s degree in Education, Social Work or related discipline preferred;
relevant experience may substitute for masters-level work. Deep understanding of social issues related
to community involvement and advocacy work in an urban setting. Applicants must be able to
demonstrate high level of initiative, as well as strong speaking, discussion facilitation, and writing skills,
and proven organizational and program planning skills. We also seek an individual with a
demonstrated commitment to diversity and to working with college students. Basic computer skills
required (Windows platform), including word processing and database use; experience with additional
software and with navigating and creating internet-based resources, including social media, helpful.

Community Organizer, Friends of the Free Library of Philadelphia

Friends of the Free Library of Philadelphia (FFL) is seeking a full-time, experienced Community Organizer who will play an important role within the organization. The community organizing responsibilities consist of hands-on work in a variety of city neighborhoods in order to develop library Friends Groups where none currently exist; strengthen newly established and transitioning groups and provide technical support, leadership, and assistance as needed. The organizer will work in tandem with, and report to, the Executive Director in order to develop and implement goals and strategies for Friends Groups as set forth in the Strategic Plan and in the organization’s manual Library Friends; a Best Practices Manual.

The work requires some nights and Saturdays and the ability to travel throughout the Philadelphia. Candidate must have current drivers license and access to a car.

The primary purpose of this conference is to expand the capacity of schools and communities, in partnership with youth, young adults and families, in promoting the successful transition of youth/young adults with disabilities to post-school outcomes of employment, post-secondary education and training, community participation and healthy lifestyles.  Participants will have the opportunity to learn about effective practices to assist youth/young adults with disabilities to break through boundaries and achieve their goals.

The scholarship covers the cost of one hotel room at a double occupancy rate for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, July 19, 20, and 21, 2011.   All youth/young adults and/or families/caregivers who are provided a scholarship will have their hotel reservations made for them at a hotel located near the conference site. This scholarship only covers the cost of the hotel room; other hotel costs are the responsibility of the scholarship recipient (i.e. phone charges, room service, etc.).  The conference registration fee of $125 will be waived for each family member and/or youth receiving a scholarship.  Scholarship recipients will be responsible for their own mileage and evening meals. Transportation arrangements to, from and during the conference are the sole responsibility of participants.

The purpose of this pre-conference session is to promote transition from school to employment.  The morning will focus on a person-centered planning tool, One-Page Description.  This tool can be used in a variety of settings, including at school and on-the-job to assist youth and young adults in identifying their employment needs and accessing the support they need to be successfully employed.  One-Page Descriptions are helpful to family members, caregivers, youth, young adults, educators and other professionals who support people who are looking for employment.  Participants will have the opportunity to develop a One Page Description during the session. The afternoon will focus on job seeking in 2011 and beyond. Presenters, including youth/young adults, employers, education system representatives and vocational rehabilitation staff will share information about the changing job market and how to prepare youth/young adults to find employment in this new, virtual world. Topics to be discussed include the use of social media, online job application, and the evolving job market.  An opportunity for participants to discuss employment strategies and tools will be provided

One of the largest and longest follow-up studies on preschool finds its enduring benefits last well into adulthood, The San Francisco Chronicle reports. Better jobs, less drug abuse, and fewer arrests are among advantages identified by the study, recently published online in the journal Science, which tracked more than 1,000 low-income, mostly black Chicago kids for up to 25 years. Chicago’s intensive Child-Parent Center Education Program is ongoing and publicly funded, and focuses on language development, scholastic skills, and building self-confidence. It involves one or two years of half-day preschool, and up to four additional years of educational and family services in grade school. Preschool teachers have college degrees and are certified in early childhood education, and parents are encouraged to be involved in the classes. The study’s lead researcher, Arthur Reynolds of the University of Minnesota, said the average cost per child for 18 months of preschool in 2011 is $9,000, but his cost-benefit analysis suggests at least $90,000 in benefits per child in terms of increased earnings, tax revenue, less criminal behavior, reduced mental health costs, and other measures. “No other social program for children and youth has been shown to have that level of return on investment,” he said.

In this brief, experts at the Institute for Higher Education Policy suggest that poverty still matters a great deal in terms of the types of institutions at which young adults are initially enrolling. In particular, they find that low-income students—between ages 18 and 26 and whose total household income is near or below the federal poverty level—are likely to be overrepresented at for-profit institutions and are likely to be underrepresented at public and private nonprofit four-year institutions.

For many young people, early college high schools are opening the door to higher education and better-paying careers. The 230 early college schools serve more than 50,000 students in 28 states, targeting groups that are underrepresented in higher education. These students and the schools they attend are refuting the conventional wisdom that such young people cannot complete high school on time and be prepared for success in college.

The report demonstrates how much low-income students must stretch to pay for college, even after grant aid is taken into account.  It finds that just five of the nation’s nearly 1,200 four-year colleges and universities have student bodies that are at least 30 percent low-income and offer low-income students a reasonable chance at a bachelor’s degree at an relatively affordable cost.

The Let’s Love Logan! Community Festival will take place from 11am to 5pm on Saturday, June 25th at T.S. Park, Old York Road and Sommerville Avenue in Philadelphia.

The US Dept. of Labor’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program is offering $5 million in grants to provide approximately 3,000 homeless veterans with job training and other services to help them succeed in civilian careers.

HVRP is the only federal program that focuses exclusively on the employment of homeless veterans. Awards will range from a minimum of $100,000 to a maximum of $300,000 for urban grants and to a maximum of $200,000 for non-urban grants.

Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies is a vibrant, international organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,500 college, high school and middle school campuses across the country and internationally.

Best Buddies programs engage participants in each of the 50 United States. We have accredited international programs on six continents with additional country programs under active development. Our six formal programs – Best Buddies Citizens, Colleges, e-Buddies®, High Schools, Jobs and Middle Schools – will positively impact more than 700,000 individuals this year.
