Mastery Charter Shoemaker Campus-Career Day

Date: Friday, May 14, 2010
Time: 8:00am – 11:00am
Location: Shoemaker Campus 5301 Media Street Philadelphia, PA 19131

What is Mastery Charter’s Career Day?

Mastery Charter’s Annual Career Day is intended to extend the tremendous growth and learning of our internship students to the underclassmen. Career Day serves to expose our younger students to the multitude of career opportunities available and to educate them about the skills necessary for success. Guest panelists from 16 different industry categories will provide background and information about their lines of work, representing more than 75 diverse career options. In addition to attending these panels, each student may participate in a career development workshop led by Student Ambassadors. Student Ambassadors will also serve as facilitators of the panel discussions.

How can I get involved with Career Day?

We need industry representatives from all fields to serve as panelists and to speak about their educational background, career path, and field of work as well as answer questions from students about the professional world.

How will Career Day Work?

Panelists will participate in four 45-minute panel sessions with 4-5 other professionals in their industry category. Career Day will begin with a networking breakfast for all panelists in our cafeteria and then panelists will begin their series of panels. Each panel will be led by a student ambassador, who will ask each panelist to introduce themselves and talk briefly (2-3 minutes) about their educational and career background.

After each panelist has introduced him/herself, the student ambassador will facilitate a question-and-answer session, where students attending the panel will ask questions of the panelists. Panelists are invited to bring supporting materials (i.e. business cards, flyers, etc) but are not expected to do so.

What will I need to do?

We ask panelists to spend about 2-3 minutes at the start of each session explaining their current position, training and career backgrounds, and insight into the requirements for success in their fields. Our student ambassadors will lead each panel session. All panelists will be provided with materials prior to Career Day with suggestions for talking points. After all panelists have spoken, the floor will be opened up for questions from students. Roughly 30 students will attend each panel session.

Additionally, each panelist will be asked to provide a brief biographical paragraph for inclusion in the Career Day program.

What is the schedule for Career Day?

Career Day is Friday, May 14, 2010. The day for panelists will start with a networking breakfast from 8:00am-8:30am. All panelists will need to arrive by 8:30am and will be finished by 12:15pm. The four 45-minute periods will be separated by five minute exchange periods.

If you are interested in speaking on a panel to represent your industry, please contact: Lili McNally, Internship Coordinator at 267.307.0886 or lili.mcnally@masterycharter.org or

Nina Johnson, Internship Assistant at 215.518.0225 or nina.johnson@masterycharter.org

Please don’t hesitate to contact Lili or Nina with any questions or concerns. Thanks for your consideration!

Fundraiser and author Andy Robinson will present a nonprofit technical assistance workshop focused on individual giving on Tuesday, April 20th at 9am at the Montgomery Auditorium at the Parkway Central Library, 1901 Vine Street in Philadelphia.

Robinson says that most organizations work heroically to get their board members engaged in face to face fundraising with very mixed results. He says that many groups tend to forget about the other ‘human resource’ available to them: their staff.

Using successful case studies, Andy will discuss ways to engage employees in cultivating, asking and thanking donors.

Fernando Chang-Muy, Esq., former Program Officer at the Philadelphia Foundation and a University of Pennsylvania Law Professor, will present a second workshop on Securing Gifts from Individuals beginning at about 11am.

This workshop will first provide a quick overview for a framework for organizational effectiveness and best practices. Against this backdrop of four core nonprofit areas, Chang-Muy will discuss how resource development is an aspect of effectiveness and also a way of raising money. He will then hone in on one source of revenue–getting funds, including major gifts, from individuals.

The workshops are free, but registration is required by clicking here.

Toolkit for coaching nonprofit leaders available

In partnership with Grantmakers for Effective Organizations, BTW informing change, and Leadership that Works, CompassPoint Nonprofit Services launched the Coaching and Philanthropy Project to assess and advance coaching as a strategy for building effective nonprofit organizations.

The CAP Project is a deep dive into learning about the nonprofit sector’s support for and use of coaching, something no one has examined to this extent before, and has resulted in freely available tools and resources on coaching.

Key findings from the project include that among the benefits of coaching for nonprofit leaders are finding a safe space for reflection, increased self-awareness, and higher levels of confidence. Coaching was also found to have a ripple effect on organizations, leading to better leadership and management, smoother transitions, and stronger leadership teams.

The project also learned that many grantmakers and their partners have created successful systems for ensuring that coaching is delivering results. This includes connecting coaching to specific goals and outcomes for individuals and organizations.

Coaches with nonprofit experience, including those who served as executive directors or board members, are better prepared to help nonprofit leaders and organizations. There is a growing interest among nonprofit leaders and their funders in seeking “bridgers”-that is, coaches who bring both a deep understanding of the nonprofit context and deep knowledge of the core competencies and ethical guidelines of coaching.

The CAP Project has produced action guides for grantmakers, nonprofits, and coaches as well as an online took kit of supporting materials. The tool kit includes an executive summary with highlights of the CAP Project, a coaching readiness questionnaire, a tool for selecting a nonprofit coach, types of coaching available for nonprofit leaders, competency guidelines for coaches who work with nonprofits, reports that describe how integrating coaching can enhance leadership and organizational capacity initiatives, and action guides.

To obtain a free toolkit, contact Kayte Connelly at Best Principled Solutions by emailing her at Kayte@bestprincipledsolutions.com
