ECA is pleased to announce its annual Energy Services Conference: “2009: It’s Time to Save Energy.” With so many exciting initiatives in energy conservation and green jobs, the conference will lead with new energy conservation services available. With the impending expiration of PECO’s rate caps next year, energy efficiency remains the only sure path to energy affordability for Pennsylvanians.

The conference will be in the morning on Thursday, November 19, 2009. Registration and breakfast begins at 8:00 am with the conference from 8:45 am to 1:00 pm.

The enclosed agenda details the speakers and session topics. We’re delighted to welcome Mayor Nutter and Senator Kitchen as our keynote speakers. As you know only too well, an increasing number of Pennsylvanians are having trouble making ends meet in this economy. Utility terminations continue to rise. While energy has always been a difficult issue for low-income residents, in recent years, more moderate income people are struggling with high energy cost. It is vital that Pennsylvanians learn how to save energy in their homes and take full advantage of act 129, federal tax credits, and other incentives now.

Please complete the enclosed registration form and return it, along with registration fee of $30, which includes the annual 2009-2010 Philadelphia Energy Directory and all other conference material. Our new venue, the Friends Center 1501 Cherry Street (NW corner of 15th and Cherry) is easily accessible by Public transportation and seats 700 so bring everyone who is interested!

The State of City Leadership for Children and FamiliesA groundbreaking new report by NLC’s Institute for Youth, Education and Families (YEF) identifies the nation’s 32 most cutting-edge city innovations to help children and families thrive, and documents emerging and established trends in municipal leadership to promote child and family well-being.

Building on the YEF Institute’s intensive work with hundreds of cities over the past decade, “The State of City Leadership for Children and Families” highlights the progress that cities have made and the potential for future action in nine areas:

* Early childhood;
* Education;
* Afterschool;
* Youth in transition;
* Youth violence prevention;
* Family economic success;
* Community wellness;
* Youth civic engagement; and
* Local “infrastructure” for children and families.

The publication was unveiled October 13, before more than 300 municipal leaders attending the 2009 National Summit on Your City’s Families in Boston.

“In describing the state of city leadership for children and families in 2009, this report highlights the broad range of innovations and trends gaining traction at the local level,” said Savannah, Ga., Mayor Otis Johnson, 2009 Chair of NLC’s Council on Youth, Education and Families. “It also provides municipal leaders with a valuable new tool that will strengthen city efforts and accelerate the spread of promising strategies across the nation.”
