1. The Melody program is designed to provide musical instruments and instrument repairs to existing K-12 school music programs that have no other source of financing to purchase additional musical instruments and materials. If you are applying on behalf of more than one school, separate applications are required for each school.

2. The Mr. Holland?s Opus Foundation accepts grant applications throughout the year.

3. We do not make cash awards. Grants of instruments and instrument repairs range between $500 and $5,000. Awarded instruments may be both new and refurbished.

4. Applicants whose music programs lack institutional financial support and whose students qualify for financial assistance will receive greater consideration. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or returned. Since MHOF receives funding requests far in excess of our ability to fund, only a small portion of requests can be approved, and MHOF may only partially fund approved requests. A decision not to fund a school program does not necessarily reflect on the merit of the applicant school.

Deadline: None.

2. Homeless Prevention: Rental Assistance for Households Currently in Transitional Housing ($1 million)

Briefing: 2:00 pm, Thursday, December 14, 2006
Proposal Deadline: 4:00 pm, Wednesday, January 17, 2007

The Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD) is seeking a non-profit Housing Provider to administer a rental assistance program funded with the Housing Trust Fund. The purpose of the program is to provide permanent housing for up to three years to households or families who are currently residing in transitional housing. The selected Housing Provider will contract with OHCD to administer the program.

A total of $1,000,000 is available for rental assistance payments, program delivery costs and administrative costs over three years. With these funds, OHCD expects to provide rental assistance payments to approximately 40 households. Eligible households are those currently living in homeless transitional housing who are able to live independently, but who require a subsidy to afford rental housing. It is anticipated that at the end of three years of rental assistance, these households will be able to pay for their own housing, either by continuing the rental unit for which assistance had been provided, by moving into a unit owned by the Philadelphia Housing Authority, or by securing other housing.

This tenant-based rental assistance is designed to model the Section 8 (Housing Choice) program, which pays to a landlord the difference between fair market rent (including utilities) and 30% of the beneficiary?s monthly income. Tenant-based rental assistance is assigned to a specific person or household, which may then use the assistance to rent an apartment or dwelling unit on his/her own. One source of rental units may be developments built using the Low Income Housing Tax Credit which have vacancies. The responsibility for locating an appropriate unit rests with the client. Clients will continue to receive case management through the Office of Supportive Housing.

Briefing Session

Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend a briefing session:

Thursday, December 14, 2006, 2:00 p.m.
OHCD Board Room
1234 Market St., 17th floor
Philadelphia, PA 19107

Proposal Submission
Proposals are due at OHCD on or before Wednesday, January 17 at 4:00 p.m.

For the first time since the rise of homelessness more than 20 years ago, communities can articulate a detailed, practical strategy for ending family homelessness, a strategy that works.

Communities are using proven program models and systemic reforms to ensure that children and their parents no longer have to sleep in shelters, in cars, in abandoned buildings, in storm drains, in mini-storage lockers, in caves, in tents, in the open or on the floors or couches of one acquaintance after another for a few days at a time. Communities are solving this vexing and shameful problem in ways that are cost effective. They are setting skepticism aside and moving forward.

Title of internship: Residency Artist Research and Translation Assistant

Start Date: January 16, 2007
End Date: April 30, 2007

Expected number of hours per week: The internship hours will fluctuate based on the research needs and when the artist is in Philadelphia, but will be at least 8 hours per week.

The hours are (or could be): during office hours and weekends (if and when Rachid is in Philadelphia), as needed

Compensation: volunteer or college credit

Description of internship: Artist Rachid Koraichi is interested in creating a site-specific art installation sited in Philadelphia neighborhoods that refer to histories usually passed over. He wishes to employ the writings of Philadelphia authors and poets, most of whom are African American, in groups of seven to provide commentary on the site (either direct or metaphorical), and to translate those writings into Arabic. The intern will provide translation during the artist’s visits to Philadelphia. The Research intern will be expected to collaborate on identifying appropriate writings in collaboration with the artist and guest curator, Salah Hassan. Authors currently under consideration are: WEB DuBois, Sonia Sanchez, Trapeta Mayson, William Penn, Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, O.V. Catto, Phyllis Wheatley, Lorene Carey. Rachid Koraichi is an Arabic artist living in Paris, France. His aesthetic is deeply rooted in his multicultural Algerian heritage, and his art demonstrates a tremendous awareness of the most recent currents in the international contemporary art scene. Kora?chi works with many media, including ceramics, textiles, poetry, calligraphy, and paint. Born to a Sufi family in Ain Beida, Algeria, his work is intimately informed by the numerology, signs and ethos of Sufi mysticism. He was recently included in the international touring exhibition ‘Short Century’, and in the 47th and 49th Venice Biennale. Part of his installation, ‘Path of Roses’, comprising embroidered silk textiles, steel sculptures, roses and Turkish ceramics was recently acquired by the British Museum.

Specific skills needed: On-line research skills, familiarity with African American Literature, fluency in Arabic (and/or French).

To apply: Please send your resume and cover letter to info@philagrafika.org. Cover letter should include what position you are applying for, how you heard about Philagrafika and what you hope to gain from an internship here. During the interview process the intern will be asked to submit a translation of a short text chosen by the curator and artist.
