In tough economic times, the public raises questions about the value of art, its relevance to students, and the role of the arts in civic, political, and multiple cultural arenas. How can art facilitate systemic change or should it be civically engaged at all? How can educators best engage the community and students in cross-disciplinary artistic collaboration? How might creative expression provide a foundation for developing problem-solving abilities for this generation of students? As members of the creative class, artists can address these concerns by demonstrating the power of civically-engaged art.

Whatever your art discipline (photography, visual arts, dance, music, theater, creative writing or interdisciplinary and media art) and experience with service-learning, this workshop will offer you and your colleagues a valuable opportunity to think deeply about civic engagement and the arts, to trade ideas and view model partnerships, and to build or revise a course around service-learning to meet both learning objectives and real community needs.

Featured Facilitators
Susan Agre-Kippenhan, Professor of Graphic Design, is chair of the Art Department at Portland State University. Received an MFA in Visual Communication from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BS in Painting from Skidmore College.

The Corporation for National and Community Service has announced the availability of approximately $2.4 million in Challenge Grants for a small number of nonprofit organizations to expand or initiate new programs to engage volunteers in meeting community needs.

Challenge Grants is a matching grant program in which applicants are required to provide at least $2 in private funds to match every federal dollar awarded. Matching funds must be in cash. The Corporation anticipates making up to four grants through the program in 2004, with a minimum grant of $500,000 and a maximum of $1 million. The deadline for organizations to apply is June 8.

?Our Challenge Grant program is a powerful catalyst to bring new private supporters of service to the table,? said David Eisner, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. ?We?re looking forward to working with nonprofit organizations to expand their reach, develop new sources of funding, and help build sustainable service and volunteer programs.?

Organizations receiving funds through these grants must either greatly expand service by engaging citizens in meeting community needs or offer new services through expanded citizen engagement. Applicants must propose a program with a state-wide, regional (two or more contiguous states), or national (two or more non-contiguous states) focus.

In its first Challenge Grant competition in 2003, the Corporation awarded a total of $5.9 million in grants to eight nonprofit organizations to recruit and train new volunteers to handle tasks ranging from tutoring children to serving in health care centers.

Nonprofit organizations, including faith-based and community-based organizations that have not applied for federal assistance from the Corporation in the past, are encouraged to apply. The Corporation requires applicants to apply through its online eGrants system, which is at <a href="http://www.cns.gov/egrants/index.html">http://www.cns.gov/egrants/index.html</a>. However, if for a legitimate reason an applicant must submit a paper application, it must be received by 5 p.m., June 8.

The Corporation expects to announce its selections by August 15. For further information, contact Thea Kachoris at (202) 606-5000, ext. 420, or takachoris@cns.gov. The TTY number is (202) 565-2799. Upon request, this information will be made available in alternate formats for people with disabilities. The awards will cover a period not to exceed one year. A more detailed description of the funding opportunity is available at <a href="http://www.nationalservice.org/whatshot/notices.html">http://www.nationalservice.org/whatshot/notices.html</a>.

The Corporation for National and Community Service provides opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to serve their communities and country through three programs: Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America. Together with the USA Freedom Corps, the Corporation is working to build a culture of citizenship, service, and responsibility in America. For more information, visit <a href="http://www.nationalservice.org">http://www.nationalservice.org</a>.

Proposals Invited for Efforts to Integrate Communities of Color in Mainstream Philanthropy
Deadline: June 1, August 30, November 30, 2004

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation (<a href="http://www.wkkf.org/">http://www.wkkf.org/</a>) has announced the launch of a new project to strengthen philanthropy.

The initiative, "Expanding the Boundaries: Leadership in Philanthropy Project," is designed to stimulate nonprofit work that broadly integrates communities of color into the world of philanthropy at large. Organizations seeking to receive a grant through the program must propose projects meeting two objectives: 1) they enhance the work of emerging leaders and donors of color; and 2) they promote the creation and sharing of knowledge that supports these leaders and donors. Critical to the success of both of these objectives is the building and dissemination of tools for nonprofit sustainability and innovative methods of giving related to communities of color.

Grant applicants are encouraged to submit a pre-proposal letter describing the proposed project/program, measurable outcomes, and a timeline for accomplishing key tasks (projects may span one to three years).

The pre-proposal letter must also identify organizations in one of the following categories:

Category A: Organizations interested in exploring an innovative idea that cuts across the three dimensions of engaging new leaders and donors, generating new knowledge, and creating new tools related to integration of communities of color in mainstream philanthropy. The project/program may be local or national in scope. Grants in this category range from $50,000 to $200,000.

Category B: Organizations interested in enhancing and expanding an existing innovative project/program. The project/program must be collaborative and may be local or national in scope. Grants in this category range from $200,000 to $500,000.

Category C: Organizations interested in collaborating with other organizations to explore and promote innovative ideas on a national level. The project/program must be national in scope. Grants in this category range from $500,000 to $1,000,000.

Proposals will be accepted in three rounds: the first-round due date is June 1, 2004; the second is August 30, 2004; and the third is November 30, 2004.

See the Kellogg Foundation Web site to download the proposal submission guidelines and/or for further information on the foundation’s Philanthropy and Volunteerism program.
