The Corporation for National and Community Service is seeking people to review 2003 Americorps and Learn and Serve America grant applications this spring, as well as to facilitate grant panel discussions. We are asking you to assist us by identifying people you think have the skill, time, and interest to serve as peer reviewers or facilitators, and to forward this email to them.

The Corporation connects Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to give back to their communities and country through three programs: AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America. Part of the USA Freedom Corps, the Corporation plans to make grants in 2003 to support people and organizations that use citizen service as a strategy to meet critical national and community needs, foster an ethic of civic responsibility, and strengthen the ties that bind us together as a nation.

Reviewers read, score, and evaluate proposals individually, discuss their findings with other members of their panel, and come to consensus on the quality of applications. The panel of reviewers ranks proposals accordingly. Facilitators guide the work of the panel, facilitate panel conference calls, and make sure that all work is complete.

We seek a diverse group of reviewers and facilitators who have expertise in the areas of volunteer management, education, literacy and tutoring, human services, nonprofit management, homeland security, public safety, and the environment. With the exception of federal employees, reviewers and facilitators receive an honorarium for their work.

If you or others you know are interested in serving as a peer reviewer or facilitator, please visit our website at <a href="http://www.nationalservice.org/egrants/peerreview">http://www.nationalservice.org/egrants/peerreview</a> for more specific information and to complete an application online. We have found that some people are not able to successfully gain access through this link. If that is the case, you can type in http://www.nationalservice.org, click on the orange eGrants button, and click on the button that says Peer Reviewer. Thank you for your assistance in identifying expert reviewers and facilitators who will help us determine high quality AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America applications.

Nancy Talbot
Director of Program Planning and Development
Corporation for National and Community Service

Dear Service-Learning Colleagues:

On behalf of all of us here at First Book, we’d like to invite you to join a teleconference discussion to learn about our new campus-based initiative. Hear how colleges and universities nationwide can serve their communities by providing brand-new, high-quality books to children from low-income families through First Book. First Book is a national non-profit organization that gives children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. First Book primarily works with community-based volunteer chapters to provide existing local literacy programs with grants of brand-new books. Through our work, First Book not only helps improve the educational opportunities available through local programs but, because the books become the property of the children, First Book also improves the home literacy environment of underprivileged children. We are eager to combine the success of our proven model with the energy and inspiration of young leaders at the college level. In the last two years alone, First Book has provided almost 15 million new books to children in need in hundreds of communities nationwide – and approximately 25,000 of those were through our five successful pilot campus chapters.

Our conference call on Thursday, February 20, 2003, at 2:00 PM EST will provide an overview of First Book and our campus-based volunteer model, and how you can get your campus involved. The call will feature current First Book college volunteers and First Book staff, and will offer a detailed look at how the model works in practice. To register for this free call, please e-mail me at kjessup@firstbook.org and I will send you more detailed information, including an agenda and relevant access information. In the meantime, if you would like to learn more about First Book and our work around the country, please visit our website at http://www.firstbook.org, call us toll-free at 866-393-1222, or just send me an e-mail at kjessup@firstbook.org. Please feel free to share this information with other colleagues as well.

I hope you’ll be able to join us on Feb. 20!

All best,

The Oxfam America CHANGE Initiative is now accepting applications for the 2003-2004 academic year.

Oxfam America is an international development agency dedicated to creating lasting solutions to global poverty, hunger, and social injustice through long-term partnerships with poor communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the U. S. We work to eliminate the root causes of social and economic inequities by challenging the structural barriers that foster conflict and human suffering and limit people from gaining the skills, resources, and power to become self-sufficient. Oxfam America also advocates for policy change, produces educational materials for the U.S. public, and actively engages them on the issues of poverty and social justice.

The CHANGE Initiative aims to develop capable and confident young leaders, who are informed and active voices for positive social change, and who inspire greater global awareness in others. Oxfam America is looking for a diverse group of undergraduate students, rising sophomores and juniors, committed to global social justice issues. The students will work on the issues of Fair Trade coffee, global hunger and trade, and be willing to organize campaigns and educational opportunities on their campuses and in their communities.

Selected students are required to participate in a training in Boston, July 26-Aug 1 organized and paid for by Oxfam America, and to communicate regularly with Oxfam staff about the work they are undertaking on their campus.

Applications are due on April 1st. We strongly encourage online applications at: http://www.oxfamamerica.org/youth/art3819.html

If you have any questions please call 1-800-77-OXFAM ext. 464 or email CHANGE@oxfamamerica.org.

PS- This year you can nominate students on your campus or others by going to the Tell a Friend section of our website at http://www.oxfamamerica.org/youth/art3797.html

We invite you to submit a session proposal for the 2003 CTCNet Annual National Conference, June 26-29 in Washington, DC!

Apply online at http://www2.ctcnet.org/conf/2003/present/session.asp!

Deadline for Proposals: February 19, 2003
Notification of accepted sessions: March 1, 2003

About the Conference:

The CTCNet Annual National Conference has been the premier event in the community technology field throughout the past decade – no other conference draws representatives from so many of the most outstanding community technology programs together with community leaders, non-profit practitioners, funders and policymakers.

With attendance expected to reach over 700, this year’s conference will be the best yet! We?re looking for dynamic presentations and workshops on topics such as:

* Programs and Curricula;
* Policy, Advocacy and Organizing;
* Technology; and
* Organizational Development.

About Presenting & Sessions:
Sessions should be interactive – the most effective (and popular) sessions are those that involve attendees in meaningful and creative ways. Based on a great deal of input from conference evaluations over the past several years, preference will be given to applicants proposing workshops oriented toward building skills and resources, rather than panel presentations.

Sessions should also fit the learning tracks of the conference. Information on this year’s conference tracks can be found on our Presenter Opportunities page http://www2.ctcnet.org/conf/2003/present/session.asp. Most sessions will be 90 minutes long, but there may be opportunities for two hour sessions. Applicants should be flexible to hold their proposed sessions on any day of the conference.

CTCNet reviews each session proposal and takes care to ensure varied content and perspectives. All presenters should be open to co-presenting if CTCNet believes it is appropriate and should consider issues of diversity and disability access in their sessions.

Session Presenters and Organizers will receive a waived registration fee for the full day of the conference on which their session falls, or a discount of $100 off the $220 conference registration fee if they are attending the entire conference.

Learn more and apply online at http://www2.ctcnet.org/conf/2003/present/session.asp

If you have any questions, contact Stephen Quinn at squinn@ctcnet.org.
