I’ll keep this short. My name is Paul Byrne. I’m organizing recess activities for the kids at Drew Elementary, who right now just run around on a concrete lot. I need students who are willing to donate as little as half an hour a week to come and supervise games such as kickball, football and jump rope.
Times are:
11:30 – 12:00 = 1st and 2nd grade
12:15 – 12:45 = 3rd thru 5th grade
1:00 – 1:30 = 6th thru 8th grade

If you can volunteer for any of these times, any day of the week, please contact me. We really need help with the last two shifts on Monday and Tuesday, the last shift on Wednesday, the first and last on Thursday and the first shift on Friday, but of course would love to have you at any time. It’s fun, it’s easy and the kids will love you for it. Drew Elementary is at 38th and Powelton, one block north of Market.

Since 1992, the Office of Environmental Justice (OEJ), at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has sponsored a Summer Intern Program through a cooperative agreement with the Environmental Careers Organization (ECO), a non-profit organization located in Boston. Approximately, 2,000 students from all parts of the U.S., from diverse ethnic backgrounds, and all academic levels (undergraduate, graduate and doctoral) have participated in this educational program. The students have received training on challenging science, engineering, management, education and policy-related projects at EPA. In 2000, OEJ initiated the Community Intern Program, through which more than 40 students have experienced environmental protection at the grassroots level. Because of the success of this initiative and the overwhelming response of organizations, the Community Intern Program will be available annually and will place 30 interns with local community organizations.

Preference will be given to community organizations that were not selected the previous year. Students must be citizens of the United States, its territories, or possessions, or lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence.

If your organization would like to participate in this opportunity to receive a student this summer, your project description must be received by January 31st for placement that summer. Your project must be to develop research, or be of a research nature, (i.e., conducting a survey, doing research, collecting and analyzing data) which will be used to expand scientific knowledge or understanding of the subject studied.

IT?S CRUCIAL TO TEACH CHILDREN TO THINK
The current heated debate over the use of statewide standardized testing to measure children’s educational progress brings to mind the wonderfully contrarian wisdom of Abraham Heschel, a powerful and prophetic voice of an earlier generation. In a 1960 essay, Heschel, a pre-eminent Jewish theologian and beloved seminary professor, tossed out this gem: "The valid test of a student is his ability to ask the right questions. I would suggest that we evolve a new type of examination paper, one in which the answers are given — the questions to be supplied by the student." In other words, let’s teach young people not just a whole lot of facts; let’s help them learn how to think. In this passionate editorial, Chi-Dooh Li describes why, in a democratic society, the ability of citizens to engage in critical thinking must rank high on our list of educational objectives.

The Young and the Homeless
If you?re a teenager in foster care, coming of age means growing up ? fast. When you turn 18 (or 21 in some states), you have officially ?aged-out? of the foster care system. It?s suddenly your responsibility to find a job and a place to live, and to make sure all your bills are paid on time. But without the financial and emotional resources that usually accompany a stable family life, many former foster youth find themselves on the street. In fact, a large percentage of homeless adults have passed through the foster care system.

What?s being done to make sure the current generation of teenagers on the verge of emancipation from foster care don?t end up homeless, too?
