On the same day, Saturday, November 9 beginning at around 10 a.m., some 20 container grown native species will be planted in Lansdowne Park on Nyack Street, down the street from the Lansdowne Public Library. a block or two South of Baltimore Pike in Lansdowne. These trees were grown by Tim Deveney and others who operate “TREE THE STREETS,” a non-profit container tree nursery for native species in Ridley Park which have been used with great results for planting hard to find varieties with great root systems. They require special treatments in planting and maintenance which Tim will be most happy to explain if you show up to help. They could probably use more shovels. Then, on the next Saturday, November 16 from 10 a.m. to around 3 p.m., some 14 honey locusts will be planted on the 4900 block of Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia with the cooperation of a number of Tree Tender groups, including Baltimore Avenue in Bloom, UC Green, Cross Baltimore and the newest local group, the West Philly Tree Tenders. These are balled and burlaped trees which will be installed in newly created tree pits. Plenty of planting equipment will be on hand so just bring your own gloves. Again, we promise to feed you and offer you another opportunity to hone your planting skills. The Community Development Society invites you to join community development practitioners, researchers, policy makers, and citizen leaders from around the world. The theme of the conference is Community as Place. This conference embraces common efforts to foster meaningful collaborations, extend the community development networks, and holistically integrate community-based research, policy, and practice toward the goal of building healthy and sustainable communities of place.

You are invited to submit a proposal sharing your research, practice, or policy work that addresses the changing world of community development. Proposals are due December 15; selections of presentations will be made by January 17. Conference Theme: Place-based communities include attention to social, human, natural, built and financial capital in a balanced and holistic way. We encourage presentations that address the connections between youth, place and community development.

The National Center for Community Education (Flint, Michigan) and the Center for Community Partnerships (UPenn) will cosponsor their fourth annual workshop on Community Schools-Higher Education Partnerships from February 24-26, 2003. This three-day workshop will explore the development and implementation of K-H partnerships to support school day, after school and extended day programs that meet the broad range of needs of children and youth, their families and the broader community through an active, engaged, service-oriented curriculum.

The Nonprofit Sector Research Fund (http://www.nonprofitresearch.org/), a grantmaking program of the Aspen Institute in Washington, D.C., offers the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship in conjunction with a summer internship program open to members of minority groups based on need and academic excellence.

Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible for the award. Through this scholarship program, the Fund seeks to introduce a diverse group of students to issues relating to philanthropy, voluntarism, and nonprofit organizations. Recipients may arrange with their colleges or universities to receive academic credit for this experience.

The ideal candidate for this scholarship is a highly motivated graduate or undergraduate student from an underrepresented community. She or he should have a good academic record, and also have the following: research and analytical abilities; a background in the social sciences or humanities; excellent writing and communication skills; and demonstrated financial need. The intern must be able to be at the Aspen Institute in Washington, D.C. for 10-12 weeks during the summer.

A scholarship grant of between $2,800 and $4,200 will be awarded, depending on the recipient’s educational level, financial need, and time commitment.

Open Meadows Foundation Offers Funding for Women and Girls and Social Change

Deadline: February 15 and August 15, annually

The Open Meadows Foundation funds projects that are designed and implemented by women and girls; projects that have limited access to financial resources and which reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of our society and promote the empowerment of women and girls; and projects for social change that have encountered obstacles in their search for funding.

Open Meadows provides grants of up to $2,000 to cover start-up expenses or to support ongoing projects. Projects focusing on indigenous women or young women activists may also receive funding from the foundation’s special funds: the Jeanne Meurer Indigenous Women’s Fund, the Ellen Dougherty Activist Women’s Fund, and the PatsyLu Fund for women’s music projects. Open Meadows does not fund individuals, fellowships, or scholarships.

Energetic and creative individual to manage development and implementation of Food Stamp Participation Project, a research-based program to increase participation in the Food Stamp Program in Delaware and Montgomery counties. Responsibilities include education and training of community health workers, development and oversight of the project’s educational interventions, development and maintenance of relationships with partner agencies, oversight of the tracking of interventions and Food Stamp Program applications, and coordination of all other aspects of this program.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred in social work, public health, nutrition or related field. Qualified individuals will also have at least 2 years of program or staff development experience, knowledge of public policies and benefits and an interest in maternal and child health and well-being. Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team required. Driver’s license and transportation required.
