The benefits are anticipated to include catharsis, social support, and individual and community empowerment from organization and advocacy efforts that might result from the community gatherings.

The goal is to have a systematically developed network established to ensure that all sections of Philadelphia have an opportunity to participate in a locally run community meeting. We are seeking individuals to be part of a Core Group of leaders from around the city who would assist in the development of the network. The time commitment should be no more than 5 to 8 hours in a year.

Youth Outreach at the Points of Light Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of mini-grants for youth-led service projects that honor the memory of those lost on September 11th . Made possible by funding from the Gates Foundation, we will offer mini-grants ranging from $250-$500 to youth-led projects supporting the USA initiative. There will be approximately 10-25 mini-grants available; the application deadline is October 31, 2002 . The goal of the mini-grants is to have young people involved not only in the execution of service projects but in the planning stages as well; applications that involve youth in a meaningful way will be given preference. This involvement can include but is not limited to: planning the project, helping to write the grant proposal, and leading the service project. In keeping with the volunteerism spirit of the USA initiative, projects cannot be fundraising efforts. The only exceptions may be projects that raise money for causes that can be identified with specific individuals- for example a walk-a-thon to raise money for AIDS research would be appropriate if done to honor someone active in AIDS-related causes. It is not possible to do any fundraising for September 11th related funds and charities at the request of the Family Advisory Council. All projects need to be planned specifically for the USA initiative and largely completed by May 3, 2003. To receive an application contact Renee Kurth at rkurth@pointsoflight.org or (202) 729-8208.

Ford Foundation Invites Nominations for Leadership for a Changing World Program

Deadline: January 7, 2003

Leadership for a Changing World, an initiative of the Ford Foundation (http://www.fordfound.org/ ), in partnership with the Advocacy Institute (http://www.advocacy.org ) and the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University ( http://www.nyu.edu/wagner/ ), seeks to recognize, strengthen, and support emerging leaders and to highlight the importance of community leadership in improving lives. The program annually recognizes twenty outstanding leaders or leadership groups not yet broadly known beyond their immediate community or field.

Leaders recognized by are active in a range of areas and fields, including economic and community development, human rights, the arts, education, human development, sexual and reproductive health, religion, media, and the environment. Awardees will receive $100,000 over two years to support their work and will be provided an Independent Learning Account of $30,000 for supporting activities that advance their efforts. The funds will be made available to the nonprofit organization associated with the awardee. (Arrangements can be made for fiscal agents if awardees are not formally associated with a 501(c)(3) organization.)

Over the two-year program, awardees will participate in semi-annual program-wide meetings designed to provide opportunities for shared learning and collaboration among awardees and other leaders. Awardees will work with program officials to help raise public awareness of their efforts and to explore their unique approaches to leadership, and will also contribute to a research effort to deepen under- standing of leadership in communities.

Nominators are invited to identify leaders who demonstrate a range of qualities, including the ability to find effective, systemic solutions to tough social problems. The program is looking for leaders largely unrecognized outside of their field or community as well as leadership that is sustainable beyond any individual effort. Nominees must be U.S. residents working on domestic issues and must have been involved in the work for which they are being nominated for at least four years. A nominator may be anyone who is well acquainted with the nominated leader or the leadership group and can attest to the qualifications of the nominee.

The Society for Community Research and Action – Division 27 of the American Psychological Association invites you to its 9th Biennial Conference

June 4 – 7, 2003 New Mexico Highlands University Las Vegas, New Mexico

A primary goal of the 9th Biennial Conference of the Society for Community Research and Action is to foster constructive discussion, interaction, and exchange of ideas involving community research and action. The conference provides a forum for presenting exciting new work from professionals and community members in all areas of community research and action, including new contributions to theory, methodology, and practice; implementing and disseminating innovative programs; and public policy.

Conference registration includes admission to all sessions, lunch on full conference days, continental breakfast, and a dinner/social event. Participants will have the option of staying in one of several local hotels and motels, most of which are a short walk from the NMHU campus, or rooms in the NMHU dormitories. Further details about conference registration, including travel arrangements, lodging, and information about conference accessibility, are available on the website. Persons or organizations wishing to exhibit materials at the conference should contact Jean Hill (jlhill@nmhu.edu).

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Proposals are invited for sessions on a wide range of topics that address the conference themes. Rather than emphasizing paper presentations, the conference encourages innovative programs that provoke discussion and exchange. The deadline for application of proposals is November 17, 2002. For additional information, and to submit a proposal online, please visit the conference website.
