The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has announced a special

Awards ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 will require recipients to raise
an equal amount from non-federal sources. Except for the one-to-one
PROJECT H.O.M.E. – Community Economic Development Summer Associate

Project/Job Description:
This part-time summary associate position will focus on two primary
projects that are critical to the success of our community economic
development initiative.

The first project involves data collection related to the ownership,
usage, and physical conditions of the Ridge Avenue Commercial Corridor
in Lower North Central Philadelphia. The data will be used to establish
prioritized plans for the re-use of vacant property, promoting business
clusters, attracting new businesses, and evaluating the impact of the
community economic development program. Given our commitment to
community involvement and the area to be covered (roughly 10 blocks),
data collection will be coordinated with community residents and
stakeholders. This process will involve a walking tour to assess the
status of property and parcels on each block and take digital
photographs of each property. Once data is collected the intern will be
responsible for leading the data entry effort. An Access database will
be available for data entry and inventory development.

The second project involves providing research and administrative
support to the local business association and the three committees
implementing Ridge Avenue on the Rebound. The intern may be expected to
do any of the following:

o Research zoning laws for the commercial corridor
o Compile information from various city and community agencies for
community handbook
o Develop and distribute flyers announcing meetings, workshops, and
events
o Attend all workshops and meetings related to Ridge Avenue on the
Rebound and the local business association (some meetings might be
scheduled in the evenings or on weekends)
o Record meeting minutes for Project H.O.M.E. files
o Provide assistance to and actively participate in open space
management projects, community clean ups and sidewalk sweeps, community
celebrations, etc.

Experience Requirements:

o Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and preferably Access.
o Interest in economic and open space development
o Excellent written and verbal skills
o Ability to work in a complex organization with multiple relationships
o Ability to adapt to changing work assignments and to function
effectively in a high pressure, short deadline environment
o Ability to work well with a wide variety of people

Hours: 25 hours/per week for 14 weeks; flexible (Monday – Friday; some
Saturdays)
Pay: $11/hour
Start Date: Monday, May 13, 2002
End Date: Friday, August 16, 2002

All resumes and cover letters must be submitted by Tuesday, April 16,
2002.

Democracy Matters is accepting applications for paid internships through
our Campus Coordinator program for 2002-03 academic year. We are a
non-partisan organization of students and professors working on campuses
across the country to educate people about the role of money in
politics, and its impact on democracy. We call for alternatives that can
reform and revitalize our political process thereby deepening democracy
in the United States. Specifically, we organize around issues of
campaign finance reform, full and partial public funding of elections,
and election reform.

We differ from other political groups on campus in that we are not a
political party and we do not concern ourselves with specific races.
Instead, we are concerned with the process of campaigns-especially
fundraising-and issues specifically related to political accountability
and democracy.

Campus Coordinators work closely with Democracy Matters staff and are
given the opportunity to participate in regional and national Democracy
Matters conferences and workshops. Democracy Matters also provides
Campus Coordinators with a wide range of support materials and funding
for campus activities.
Campus Coordinator responsibilities include:
o Build coalitions of student activists on your campus.
o Organize teach-ins on money in politics.
o Train college students to run workshops in high schools.
o Coordinate with other colleges in sponsoring reform legislation.
o Lobby and educate elected officials about campaign finance reform.
o Run petition drives and door-to-door canvasses to educate students on
the issue of money in politics.
o Create a Democracy Matters chapter that can work with students,
faculty and community activists to get private money out of politics and
people back in.

Applicants should have a commitment to social change and some organizing
experience. No expertise in campaign finance reform is required.

Campus Coordinators will be paid monthly at the rate of $750 per
semester. Additional funding is made available for campus activities.
Please send your resume and a 750 word essay that addresses the
following: (1) why your campus is a good place for Democracy Matters,
(2) how your experiences have led you to an interest in this position,
(3) how you would carry out Democracy Matters programs on your campus
and in the community; and (4) how you and your campus will benefit from
joining Democracy Matters. Please e-mail these materials to
joa-@democracymatters.org or mail to: Joan Mandle, Democracy Matters,

Dear Religious and Community Leaders:

The Era of Faith
Whether your opinion is for or against government and faith partnerships
we can all agree that faith at center stage of public debate can
ultimately increase the visibility of the faith community, which can add
more value to the concerns voiced by the faithful. What are your
concerns about faith based initiatives? More importantly, what do you
know about resources such as Charitable Choice, Collaboration Building
and Workforce Development? Are you aware of the current financial
resources that are being made available to faith and community
organizations? What is your capacity to write federal and private grants
for social programs? Lastly, how do you assess your capacity to provide
services? The time to build new paradigms in religious and community
collaborations in programs and social services has come. Resources for
Organized Active Religions (ROAR), an interfaith organization whose
mission is to: Assist faith based organizations in their endeavor to
successfully implement results-oriented management practices to improve
their social service mission and program outcome, invites you and key
members of your organization to attend a one day conference entitled,
Interfaith Growth and Vision Conference.

CONFERENCE
You are invited to attend on April 16, 2002 an Interfaith Growth and
Vision Conference to be held at the Friends Meeting House on 4th and
Arch Streets starting at 7:30 AM and ending at 5:30 PM. Cost: $20.00
per person. Please be sure to register early. Continental breakfast
and lunch will be served for approximately 600 people.

PURPOSE
The purpose of the “Interfaith Growth and Vision Conference” is to
stimulate and support the efforts of Philadelphia-area religious
organizations to increase their capacity to deliver important community
services. The conference will attempt to accomplish this task by 1)
providing educational forums and resource information in topic areas
recommended by a widely representative planning committee of interfaith
leaders and 2) by facilitating networking among participating religious
organizations and encouraging the formation of ongoing collaborations
among members of ROAR and the wider faith community.

BENEFITS
The conference will provide valuable information that can assist in the
religious communities efforts to refine management practices and enhance
existing program goals. In addition, participants will have
opportunities to learn methods essential to the procurement of federal
and state contracts.
